I've been thinking , for years i've refused to identify myself as a gamer . Not just because I think ?gamer? is an empty moniker but because I never liked gamers as a community . As individuals you are very lovely people but as a group you are often racist , sexist extremists who who stand against everything I like about the Internet. (and yes extremism is stranded behaviour for groups)

You see I always looked at the web is a meritocracy. Good ideas naturally floated upwards regardless of the authors age, race ,sex ,nationality, background, or gender. while bad ideas were ignored or made fun off . But in recent years as the Internet became more popular ( which is overall a good thing ) there has been a move towards social media and establishing an online identity for yourself . Which in my pinion has prompted allot of the racist ,sexist, homophobic ?. whatever behaviour that we've seen .

Not to say that the old Internet was some kid of magical wonderland free hatred and oppression ( god no ) but in the old days when most web pages were coded by one guy and his cat there really wasn't such a thing as a user profile . There was nothing encouraging people to post their sex , race or nationality which in turn led to less abuse .

why cant we do this today ?

Now this obviously wouldn?t be an ideal situation as running away from a problem rarely fixes it (and if you want an example of how this can go horribly wrong just look at 4chan) . But I do think that removing identifying information off accounts would lead to a more content focused Internet rather then the drama that we have today.

im not here to ask everyone to be nice to each other . It's just that your intolerance is holding back the propagation of cool shit ?... because you (Internet) are so busy fighting I miss out on cool stuff .

So stop it ? NOW

EDIT: for the benefit of those who cant read here is a short version.
I don?t care if people are nice to each other, nor is this a call for humanism (and I?ve long ago given up on actively trying to change people) . as far as im concerned everyone on the internet can be as racist as they?d like as long as that means we can spend less time arguing over social issues and more time making actual ?physical? content . adding more anonymity is only my way of achieving this but it's by no means the only answer

It's....it's my fault? What have I done...I've created a monster! I'm sorry; forgive me?

As to your point...I'm not sure what exactly your fix is so I'm going to throw out what I think you are saying and you tell me if I'm right or if I'm so far off base that I'm playing football instead: You want the names of our accounts removed (basically, everyone is literally always anonymous)?

As to your analysis, I actually disagree. I don't think that gamers are a group of assholes...I think an incredibly loud and annoying little group of fucks are drowning out all of the normal people. Removing their identity will do nothing to combat it; you just won't be able to tell at a glance who you can just ignore before they start speaking.

O...kay?

So your plan is more anonymity will equal a better internet? Somehow I highly doubt it.

Y-you say this to us?
On the most tolerant forum? With the best moderators?
I mean come on we're probably on of the most "refined" forums, hate threads and all that jazz are locked up pretty quickly and every thread has to have some kind of discussion point else they also face the lock. And aside from a few stupid uhm... unique individuals I've met the community has been as a whole, a positive one.

I dunno, it's like you're making a "Lost faith in humanity" rant and then going on to complain to say... some Buddhist monks. Not that we're buddhist monks but neither party has really done anything wrong.

Different people use the internet for different purposes, and sometimes we need the kind of information that you suggest we ban for help and whatnot. If profiles are all you're seeing, get away from the sites you're examining and look for more content-oriented sites. Simple as that.

I blame you...

for the moonlit sky
and the dream that died
with the eagle's fliiiiiiight....

No really, that was the first thought that came through my head. And now I have to go look up the song.

And I agree people should not be dickheads, but I do prefer to state that in a more calm manner.

The Internet. Internet never changes.

Since the dawn of human kind, when our ancestors first discovered the offending power of words and bile, tears has been spilled in the name of everything: from trolling to lulz to simple, annoying butt hurt.

In the year 2013, after decades of armed conflict, the anonymus nature of man could sustain itself no longer. The community was plunged into an abyss of curses and banning.

But it was not, as some had predicted, the end of the community. Instead, the apocalypse was simply the prologue to another teary chapter of human history. For man had succeeded in destroying the community - but the internet, internet never changes.

In the early days, thousands were spared the horrors of the trolling by taking refuge in enormous online shelters, known as moderated forums. But when they emerged, they had only the hell of the net to greet them - all except those at the escapist. For on that fateful day, when rage rained on the net, the giant lock of the forum threads slid closed... and were never reopened. It was here you were born. It is here you will be banned.

Because, at the escapist: no one ever enters, and no one ever leaves.

...

I have to much spare time don't I?

I disagree personally. Sure there are so people who are frankly dicks but thats true about everyone everywhere. What you said is like basing your opinion of Christians on the westboro baptist church. They are an extremely small section of the community and their behaviour doesn't represent anyone other than themselves. Gamers are generally nice people.

Anonymity wouldn't help, it causes the problem. When people are anonymous there aren't consequences, social or otherwise. Without consequences people will say any old crap because its the only place they can vent or whatever without people calling them on their racist, sexist etc. comment.

The best way to get rid of this stuff is by calling people on it and making it known that that the community wont tolerate it.

I was flirting with a girl at New Years Eve, and she asked my what my hobbies were. I spend most of my time on the internet and gaming (all my friends have moved across the country and there's not much to do in rural Ireland). But being a gamer has such a social stigmatism that my immediate thought was "DONTSAYVIDEOGAMESDONTSAYVIDEOGAMESDONTSAYVIDEOGAMES"... I stammered for a second trying to think of something else that I do, and was taking too long so I just muttered "Nothing. I do nothing." Smooth!

Yeah, if you're ever chatting up a girl... don't do that.

Gotta love all the exclamation points in the title. Tells us this guy is SUPR SRS.

And I don't even agree with your post. I have never experienced what you're talking about on this site.

Most tolerant forum? Not in the slightest.

I agree with the OP to a point, especially in the past year or so. The vocal majority of gamers (even on this forum) are exactly how he described them.
Not talking about games and instead making racists comments and focused on sex?

I don't really see that, we're still talking about games, sure there's some rude comments but nothing to that degree. And granted there are the odd thread about racism or sex but that's mostly got a proper topic and discussion point.

I feel like OP misunderstands, not all internet users are gamers. He seems to believe this to be true and blaming gamers for everything anyone does on the internet.

*Slow clap*

So, you figured me out; cause infighting between gamers so I can take over the world!

And it would have worked too, if it wasn't for more tolerant internet goers... Goody two-shoers, every one of them! *shakes fist*

OT: You can't change people. Persons yes, but not an entire sub-culture.

I am not sure what the OP is going for here. They think that if we removed bios from internet accounts suddenly everything would be so much better? They're also very upset about this not being the case?

Am I understanding this right?

Because it sounds a bit mental.

Don't you understand? Kross is the name we've given to gamers as a whole in order to try and dodge responsibility! It's gamers. Kross is made out of gamers. LISTEN TO ME, FALLOUTJACK, YOU'VE GOT TO TELL THEM - KROSS IS GAMERS!

Not if I stop them with my powers of apathy and pessimism!

You put your trust in humans; they're nothing but a miserable little pile of emotions!
