And no, it's not because I suck. I'm actually doing really well gameplay wise... It's just the story.

I'm not even going to bother putting a spoiler warning in this post, because if you've had anything to do with any sort of gaming within the past decade, you should already know what happens here.

Aeris dies. WHOMG! That in and of itself is retarded. I'll even forgive Sephiroth coming down and stabbing her just because he wants to be evil. Bad story telling, but I'll let it slide. But Aeris dies? Seriously? Everyones all mournful over that. Everyone keeps looking at her. Cloud picks her up and sets her off into the lake. Did nobody EVER hear of a phoenix down?? Or rather, since we're talking about a girl that can survive heated battles and nuclear blasts, Cure 3?? Since all that happened to her was that she was stabbed by a sword from a weak ass dude (yea I went there), her hp couldnt have possibly dropped to 0. But no. We must accept that fact that for a split second in the Final Fantasy universe, everyone forgot that phoenix downs and Cure3 existed in order to make one of the best characters of the game die off to show that you cant have an awesome team forever, or because SOMEONE has to die.

/endrant

anyway, anyone else feel this way or think these thoughts or at least something along these lines while playing FF7?

Pheonix downs are really just to wake up knocked out people, they dont trully die.

She was dead, truelly dead, you really are thinking to much into the game to think these things.

Yeah, I hear ya. That annoyed the crap outta me too. Phoenix Down! Hello! Not that the game is "realisic," but I expect a game to be consistent within it's own version of reality.

so youre saying that a nuclear explosion only knocks someone out when their hp reaches 0? WHY THE HELL ARE PEOPLE SO AFRAID OF WORLD WAR 3 THEN??

I'm sorry, I can't hear you all the way back there in 1997

Jokes, but in all seriousness, I don't think characters actually "die" in battle, they just faint (ala Pokemon), so the Phoenix Down doesnt so much resurrect them as it does revive them.

I'm so sorry my friend, but Aeris is dead and that music will haunt you forever. Now go kick Seph's ass to ease the pain :)

It appears you entered the world of this Final Fantasy game with the wrong mindset.

FF7 was the only Final Fantasy game I ever bought, or the only JRPG for that matter. And although I'm a huge RPG fan (pen & paper and wrpg) I couldn't finish it because of the battle mechanics and the boring story. I'm not saying it's a bad game, it just doesn't fit me. And I'm open to many things: from tons of dialogue with Planescape to tons of combat with Icewind Dale to tons of stats with Arcanum, or oddball RPGs such as Bioforge or Stonekeep. But JRPG? Just not my style I guess.

The story is terrible no matter what point you are along it. Terrible, terrible, terrible writing and awful characters who should have all died except for Tifa who was the only one who was not retarded. And Cid, because Cid is old and ornery and funny.
Not just being a troll. I played it and I got to the final boss. In the middle of the last fight I was doing well but then I realized, wow, I don't really give a shit about any of this and I spent 2 hours grinding for it. It was then that I turned off the playstation, never to look back.

As everyone else has said, in battles you only get "knocked out"

You rant and rave about nuclear explosions not killing people, but when it's PEOPLE who have the power to MAKE nuclear explosions how can you be surprised that someone can survive it if you're willing to believe someone can conjure one out of thin air.

If you want to moan about stuff like that, then you may as well pose the question as to why no one goes to the toilet, changes their clothes or has a gun for a hand.

I think you may have missed my point. What I meant was that expecting realism or overly logical behavior and/or story-writing in a Final Fantasy game is probably not the way to go about it if you want a fun experience.

I downloaded FF7 and i got about all of the way up until you got Red XII. It's not like I want hate it. I realllly reallly reallly wanna love it. But the fact that the story line was too slow in the beginning. I mean pushing trains. WTF was that. So no. It's not a frundamentaly bad game. It just meanders there. By accident.

Also you should try more RPG's like Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King. Its far more fun, better written, better plot, and a graphics upgrade.

It wasn't until I started replaying FFVII a few years ago that I realized just how fucked up Aerith is. She's really, really weird. But I still like her.

But, yeah, if anything I'd say that Pheonix Down is a silly name for an item that bring people back to consciousness. And then there's the whole thing with it not working on people who've had a sleep spell cast on them.

The basic idea behind the "nukes" as you call them is a magical impact that shows sheer force and power. The spirit/willpower to withstand those attacks makes them less dangerous than they really look. Illusions can't hurt you unless you believe them and these magical attacks technically are illusions for a big part.

At least that's what the explanation the I could handle so far goes like. And a stab through the entire body like Seph did it was just a big F.U. for willpower and resistance but whatever.

Point is: Aeris didn't die for NOTHING. she SACRIFICED herself to empower HOLY, the small materia sphere she lost after she died, which she said in the beginning wouldn't do anything really.

But this clash of pure vile murder on her and her selfless sacrificial attitude were it, which gave HOLY the 'signal' that it will be needed.

Don't delve too deep into the plotholes, mate. there will always be some explanation why it will work. Ever seen Final Destination? Those are all together Plotholes of impossibilities for like 80-90% of the movies.

FF7 definitely deserves to be revisited by SquareEnix, more than FF4-6. >_> Most of the story problems could be fixed with better translations and nicer graphics to help pass the time at the slower parts. :p

If you want a comprehensive explanation for Aerith's death, all you need to do is consider that Sephiroth is part of the life-stream, and this has given him unimaginable power; so, if he's the one stabbing Aerith, his "attack" would be so much more powerful than any other enemies you've fought so far (he is the last boss after all) that it would realistic within the game's reality to say that it truly killed her (not just "knocked her out" as people seem to agree they are when a character decides to take a nap for a bit in a battle till you throw a magic feather at them :p). That's how I justified it anyways.
