And, for some reason, this reminds me of when people were whining about L4D not being realistic for some reason (like the choice of guns or types of enemies), and completely missing the fact that the game was unrealistic because they were killing zombies...

You can't call "bad translation" on that crap of a story. Granted it didn't have as many plot holes as 8 but it was still terrible.

Haven't you seen the Princess Bride? When you die in battle you're only mostly dead! Aerith, when stabbed was ALL dead. Cloud should have rooted around in her pockets for loose change.

As for the P-downs, as everyones been saying, characters don't die in battles, they get KO'ed. If you can't accept that OP, then as Sonicron stated, your going in with the wrong mindset.
On a side note, don't most gaming deaths not make sense? I'll use the example of
EE's death in MGS2, no doubt Snake and Raiden have a shit load of Rations to throw down her throat? Or bandages or whatever. But, we don't, we accept it because we're told that this person WILL die. Accept it, move on, and enjoy the story gamers
well I like to use the tactics definition for phoenix down which is "revives someone from the brink of death" meaning if they are dead its too late but if they are about to die its all good

It is the Sword. the Masumune blade Sepiroth wields is the only weapon capable of killing some one beyond the help of any magic or item. if you notice. you are never put into a situation in which you can get knocked out by sepiroth's masumane blade, only killed.
the one encounter with sepiroth you run into as a team where people get knocked out and revived is when he isn't using the blade and has transformed into a 'one winged angel'

I'm not really buying the "omg fantasy" argument in general. It's called suspension of disbelief. Which means that you can make up as much crazy stuff as you want, but as long as you keep it consistent the audience will not complain.
With that being said, in a game where people randomly swoosh into private arenas and take turns hitting at eachother with obscure spells, one shouldn't consider the combat mechanics as representative of the world itself.
