FF7 was the only Final Fantasy game I ever bought, or the only JRPG for that matter. And although I'm a huge RPG fan (pen & paper and wrpg) I couldn't finish it because of the battle mechanics and the boring story. I'm not saying it's a bad game, it just doesn't fit me. And I'm open to many things: from tons of dialogue with Planescape to tons of combat with Icewind Dale to tons of stats with Arcanum, or oddball RPGs such as Bioforge or Stonekeep. But JRPG? Just not my style I guess.
I downloaded FF7 and i got about all of the way up until you got Red XII. It's not like I want hate it. I realllly reallly reallly wanna love it. But the fact that the story line was too slow in the beginning. I mean pushing trains. WTF was that. So no. It's not a frundamentaly bad game. It just meanders there. By accident.

Also you should try more RPG's like Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King. Its far more fun, better written, better plot, and a graphics upgrade.
O god, that game had potential but the amount of grinding you had to do and the amount of battles drove me insane

OT: Don't quite understand why FF7 is praised as the game created by god himself, poor storyline, terrible characters, Am i only one who named barrett MR. T? etc. only thing i enjoyed was the materia system.

I beat it yesterday... finally. I have nothing to add to the topic, I just felt like getting that out there.

Also, Phoenix downs do just bring unconscious people back, Aeris was considerably more dead than that.

Yeah but then I grew up and realised to play through a story before I make judgements and a silly thread about it

How about the whole thing with Red XIII's dad?
He's only been petrified, using a SOFT on him would clear that right up.
But what do they do?

They leave him as some kind of memorial statue to HIMSELF and let his only son believe for his whole life that his father was a deserter and a coward...

Wow, thanks Bugenhagen, thanks for all your ultimate fucking wisdom there...
I'm glad Bugenhagen dies.

Yes this is exactly how I felt about the supposed "RPG defining PRG". I went in with such high hopes and then... Nothing. It felt exactly the same as any other relevant era rpg. It made me sad.

Rules of every video game ever:
Gameplay != cutscenes/story

For most JRPGs just assume that battles and gameplay are just distractions from the story.

I know that Aerith/Aeris dies in FF7, but I've never played that game. I've played Crisis Core FF7, and the storyline really kept me in. And Genesis, the sexy *****.
For Crisis Core, there was no real XP Grinding, it was all a slot machine that left me frustrated that I'd sit there for 20 minutes at least and I went up 1 level if at all. It was still really easy despite that.
Is the original FF7 the same with XP Grind? I'm assuming so [though that's wrong of me] and I won't play it most likely. And Genesis, the human embodiment of sex, isn't going to be in it.

I never finished the game because I got bored after acquiring Cat Sith. He has a special power that looks like a slot machine. You have a random chance to get an attack that kills the enemy ( normals grinding enemies, bosses, supper-bosses called weapons). If he died before he uses it or my characters died, then I just reset the game and tried the battle over again.

Aeris' death never bothered me. I just assumed that I would get her back before the game ended or she would appear in a cut scene later near the end. I only later found out that she stays dead in the game thru the magic of the internet.

WOW. Really? That's your hang up? An amazing story about redemption and friendship and your stuck on just one part of the story? Keep playing, it gets better.

For some reason this reminds me of all those people who complain about when Superman got shot in the eye in Superman Returns.

FF7 definitely deserves to be revisited by SquareEnix, more than FF4-6. >_> Most of the story problems could be fixed with better translations and nicer graphics to help pass the time at the slower parts. :p
I played through ff7, and I'm sorry.
You can't call "bad translation" on that crap of a story. Granted it didn't have as many plot holes as 8 but it was still terrible.

Kefka would kick that momma's boy ass anyway :p. I'm sorry insane clown that actually destroys the world vs a mother complex who couldn't quite "finish" the job. Yes that is a sexual pun.
Kefka had no depth compared to Sephiroth. I mean, finding out you're a genetic experiment made to be the perfect soldier? Sure that parts a little cliche, but on top of that you're technically directly descended from a weapon of mass destruction that travels the universe in search of planets to destroy? That's a bit heavier than being an sadistic megalomaniac who's so insecure he needs the power of the gods to make himself feel important. :p

I really do think that Cloud's story could have been AMAZING if it had been organized a little better. >_> Along with a bit more dialogue to fill in the gaping holes in explanation which were only really filled by that random hidden cutscene and Crisis Core (although Crisis Core caused many problems as well... >_>).

but that just makes Kefka all the more fun. Plus that damn laugh.
I'd rather have a character with little depth but make sense and be an all-around better character, then someone with too much depth his character get tangled up in it.

There is a way to make that scene play differently, so that sephiroth falls down beside her and gives a speech before they run away. You have to use 3 chips of soylent green on Aeris before the scene and use Rosebud the Sled to out run the 300 Spartans that all die except for one (remember that its important) then Sephiroth drops down saying he is clouds father and you have to run out but you see the destroyed remains of a kingdom long ago and thats when you realize that you are in the future, but then cloud realizes that his friends are a part of his beautiful mind and that he is the ghost while sephiroth is real.

I didn't feel that way with FF7, but I did in Chrono Cross, after Serge slips into an alternate dimension in which he drowned ten years ago. Just couldn't play it after that.

Man, when Aeris died was one of my favorite parts of the game. Really it was. Why? Because it gave the game some real emotional weight that is rarely reproduced in many other games.

I couldn't finish FF7 after Tifa did her ultimate Limit Break with the nuclear explosion punch when a power outage killed the game before I could save. Unable to recover the many hours lost before the outage, I gave up and played Disgaea.
