I didn't know they could make an anime about that...

I'm still surprised by the lack of an anime/manga based on the life of Musashi Miyamoto. Yes, I know there are animes that feature characters based on him, or that mention him, and such. What I'm looking for is a more literal story based on his life. Think something along the lines of Kenshin.

For those wondering, Musashi was one of the greatest samurai to ever live. He was alleged to have fought over 60 duels, those it is believed to have been closer to 100, and never lost. He won his first duel at the age of 13. He was well known to have shown up late to most duels. He was known to be a rather accomplished writer and artist. And his most famous duel was won against Sasaki Kojirō on an island. He showed up late (of course), supposed used a wooden sword that he carved out of an oar on the way to the duel, and then escaped using the high tide and defending against attackers that supported Kojirō.

I ask: Why is there not an anime based on his life?
There is a manga very loosely based on it called vagabond if your interested.

Wait, so you're surpriseed there's an anime about sports? That's like watching Family Guy and saying OH WOW DID YOU KNOW THERE'S A CARTOON ABOUT A FAMILY THAT JUST DOES STUPID SHIT? Sports anime are a small but well represented niche of the, uh, archgenre.

It's also interesting to note that there is a new-ish manga, Bakuman, which is about... making a manga. It also has an anime now, so it's an anime based on a manga about making managa, and the main characters want their manga to become an anime... yeah
WHAT?!@?!!? I think I'm going to watch this...
It's also really accurate, if you're really interested in how manga is made Bakuman is a must watch/read.

I've been completely blown out of the water on weirdness already, but I'll post my observation anyway.

Anime is much like any other TV or movie medium, only a bit more fantastical (being animated and all). They even make fairly normal psychological thrillers involving a pop singer and her number one stalker [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perfect_Blue]... or at least... they used to.

I was going to say there's an anime about a guy who writes names in a notebook all the time, but then I saw the utility pole thing. What's next, an anime about that woman who married the eiffel tower?

There are actually several manga about transvestites, sex-changed characters, and I think even one or two regarding hermaphrodites. But let's look at some of the anime that came out of 2011's Spring Season (Remember, at least 90% of all anime began as a manga)

Sekai-Ichi Hatsukoi - Yaoi Anime about a (supposedly) "bi-curious" High School boy who confesses his love to a slightly older High School crush, then time-skips forward ten years to the same boy, now a man, who has given up on love, works as an editor for literature, but due to his own stubbornness at being the son of the CEO and not wanting everyone to think he slid in on his job, quits and becomes a manga editor, where the editor-in-chief is the man he confessed to in High School.

Oretachi ni Tsubasa wa Nai - Anime regarding several different characters, each with their own unique personalities, interacting with various people across a single city, and at around halfway through we find out that they are ALL, in fact, multiple personalities of a single person.

Steins;Gate - Mind Fuck Anime regarding a self-proclaimed "Mad" Scientist creating a device that can send text messages to the past, and who is the only person in the world capable of noticing the (sometimes drastic) changes that these time-texts have on the world.

Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae wo Bokutachi wa Mada Shiranai - Anime about a group of friends whose lives diverged when one of them died in a river, beginning many years down the line when one of the friends can see, hear, and interact with the ghost of the girl who died. Anime concerns itself with mending the relationships between the friends, their families, and most importantly, with the dead girl to see her head to heaven.

Deadman Wonderland - Gruesome Anime about people given the ability to manipulate their blood into various unique shapes and forms, all very combative in nature, and a huge facility that keeps them that functions both as a jail and a public amusement park in the same area.

So, yeah, that's just a handful of anime created in the last couple months, and most of them I have personally confirmed to having manga renditions.

Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu: Classes are determined by fighting monsters, the strength of which is determined by what grade you got on your last test. Unusual, amusing.

However, in a completely different sense, Bathtime with Himiko takes the cake. Seriously, I haven't watched this, but seen reviews, and the fact that something like this got greenlit as an actual anime kinda depresses me.

Moyashimon... It's an anime about microbiology. Do I really need to go into more detail then that?

Oh, and the lead guy kinda looks a little bit like Edward Elric.

So recently I discovered the Funimation Channel and saw some standard anime stuff: robots, magical girls, super fighting humans, living weapons etc. But then I watched Big Windup. An anime about high school baseball. I'm personally not a huge fan of baseball, but I just find myself intrigued by how odd this anime is by being so normal.

so anime watchers, what anime have you seen that made you that made you think, "I didn't know they could make an anime about that..."
Lets see I am reading Knight of the Area(Soccer), Two Baseball Mangas, Detective Conan, and a few others that don't deal with the supernatural or superhumans.

Hajime no Ippo ("The Fighting" in English, although the Japanese title is more like "Starting the Journey"). It's an anime about a group of teenagers pursuing pro boxing careers and comes at it from the viewpoint of an unlikely prospect who discovers he has a real love for the sport. The manga is one of the longest-running and has almost a thousand volumes out now, but it wasn't a really popular anime unfortunately.

It's an older MadHouse production, so it's a bit budget-minded in the ring scenes, and it's made for a 14-17 audience, but I find it very interesting because of how "normal" the environment is and how it follows our protagonist's journey as he actually learns how to box and takes his career steps. Plus there's plenty of really interesting characters, none of them stereotypes that I can tell.

I've seen manga about baseball, tennis, football, making manga, anime-clubs, bartending, cooking, fashion design... There really is a wide diversity.

Anime and Manga cover a lot of different topics, with enough genres and demographics to be able to appeal to everything. Most people only think of them as being things like DragonBall, which is probably because they also think of the western equivalents only being cape comics (Though there is admittedly much less diversity in western comics than eastern). It also helps that Baseball is really big in Japan, and a lot of the most popular manga are sports (EyeShield 21, Slam Dunk and *while I don't like it* Prince of Tennis).

It's also interesting to note that there is a new-ish manga, Bakuman, which is about... making a manga. It also has an anime now, so it's an anime based on a manga about making managa, and the main characters want their manga to become an anime... yeah
Exactly. Anime/manga can be about pretty much anything, just like any other medium. It's just that here in the West people choose to cater cartoons only to kids.

Ok, on the topic of "anything can be an anime" I have to throw in the CGI production Cat Sh*t One (replace the * with the obvious). I watched it because it is the only time I would ever see a a show about a crack commando team of rabbits rescuing other rabbits (and a woodchuck? marmot?) from terrorist camels.

Racially stereotypical as all heck, but an incredibly well executed production.

Beelzebub. It's about some high school wannabe punk who found a baby with electrical powers, Pikachu style. The baby came out of the chest of some guy the punk kid found in a river. The baby is naked about 95% of the time, because he refuses to wear diapers. So the baby basically becomes his, clinging onto his head and body all the time (again, Pikachu style). The baby ends up using its powers him beat the crap out of other punk/gang guys who don't like him.

My anime club never finished the first episode, because between the naked baby wiener all over the screen and the off-the-wall events that would make Pani Poni Dash turn around and say "WTF just happened" it was just too much for us to take.

It's japan.
Where animals are cute girls, where tanks are cute girls, where computers are cute girls, and where robots are cute girls. That a manga about cans can fall within the harem sub-genre should not be much of a surprise
