Wait, so you're surpriseed there's an anime about sports? That's like watching Family Guy and saying OH WOW DID YOU KNOW THERE'S A CARTOON ABOUT A FAMILY THAT JUST DOES STUPID SHIT? Sports anime are a small but well represented niche of the, uh, archgenre.

There are actually several manga about transvestites, sex-changed characters, and I think even one or two regarding hermaphrodites. But let's look at some of the anime that came out of 2011's Spring Season (Remember, at least 90% of all anime began as a manga)
So, yeah, that's just a handful of anime created in the last couple months, and most of them I have personally confirmed to having manga renditions.
Sekai-Ichi Hatsukoi - Yaoi Anime about a (supposedly) "bi-curious" High School boy who confesses his love to a slightly older High School crush, then time-skips forward ten years to the same boy, now a man, who has given up on love, works as an editor for literature, but due to his own stubbornness at being the son of the CEO and not wanting everyone to think he slid in on his job, quits and becomes a manga editor, where the editor-in-chief is the man he confessed to in High School.
Oretachi ni Tsubasa wa Nai - Anime regarding several different characters, each with their own unique personalities, interacting with various people across a single city, and at around halfway through we find out that they are ALL, in fact, multiple personalities of a single person.
Steins;Gate - Mind Fuck Anime regarding a self-proclaimed "Mad" Scientist creating a device that can send text messages to the past, and who is the only person in the world capable of noticing the (sometimes drastic) changes that these time-texts have on the world.
Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae wo Bokutachi wa Mada Shiranai - Anime about a group of friends whose lives diverged when one of them died in a river, beginning many years down the line when one of the friends can see, hear, and interact with the ghost of the girl who died. Anime concerns itself with mending the relationships between the friends, their families, and most importantly, with the dead girl to see her head to heaven.
Deadman Wonderland - Gruesome Anime about people given the ability to manipulate their blood into various unique shapes and forms, all very combative in nature, and a huge facility that keeps them that functions both as a jail and a public amusement park in the same area.

Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu: Classes are determined by fighting monsters, the strength of which is determined by what grade you got on your last test. Unusual, amusing.
However, in a completely different sense, Bathtime with Himiko takes the cake. Seriously, I haven't watched this, but seen reviews, and the fact that something like this got greenlit as an actual anime kinda depresses me.

Hajime no Ippo ("The Fighting" in English, although the Japanese title is more like "Starting the Journey"). It's an anime about a group of teenagers pursuing pro boxing careers and comes at it from the viewpoint of an unlikely prospect who discovers he has a real love for the sport. The manga is one of the longest-running and has almost a thousand volumes out now, but it wasn't a really popular anime unfortunately.orangeapples said:
It's an older MadHouse production, so it's a bit budget-minded in the ring scenes, and it's made for a 14-17 audience, but I find it very interesting because of how "normal" the environment is and how it follows our protagonist's journey as he actually learns how to box and takes his career steps. Plus there's plenty of really interesting characters, none of them stereotypes that I can tell.
I've seen manga about baseball, tennis, football, making manga, anime-clubs, bartending, cooking, fashion design... There really is a wide diversity.

Ok, on the topic of "anything can be an anime" I have to throw in the CGI production Cat Sh*t One (replace the * with the obvious). I watched it because it is the only time I would ever see a a show about a crack commando team of rabbits rescuing other rabbits (and a woodchuck? marmot?) from terrorist camels.

Beelzebub. It's about some high school wannabe punk who found a baby with electrical powers, Pikachu style. The baby came out of the chest of some guy the punk kid found in a river. The baby is naked about 95% of the time, because he refuses to wear diapers. So the baby basically becomes his, clinging onto his head and body all the time (again, Pikachu style). The baby ends up using its powers him beat the crap out of other punk/gang guys who don't like him.orangeapples said:
