Anonymous is pretty much a random force of internet chaos, that is primarily interested in generating lulz. While it has been getting into activism of a sort recently, for years it pretty much existed to harass people and groups that it collectively decided it did not like.Trezu said:people praise them but others see them as enemy's they popped out of nowhere and just started taking over.
Do you think there intentions are good?
Are they Evil or Good?
Are there threats empty?
I think there the good guys there trying to do the right thing take down bad company's.
I think they can and will fight back.
The way they go about certain things can be troubling.
The recent trends of "Hacktivism" are debatable and have lead to discussions about new anonymous vs. old anonymous.
If you can get past the humor, I think Encyclopedia Dramatica has what is shockingly one of the most complete run downs on Anonymous there is, not to mention coverage of a bunch of their raids and actions.

Anonymous is by and large a group that will be acting for free information against goverments at one moment, and then harassing 12 year olds whom they find obnoxious the next. What your seeing right now is par for the course, but then again so is what they did with "Jessie Slaughter".
When you look at their overall body of work, it's easy to see why Anonymous generates such mixed opinions.
I personally agree with some things they have done, disagree with others, and there is also a bit of disgust thrown in there from time to time as well.
Right now I can say that I think Sony is deserving of their attention, on the other hand I felt their defense of "Wikileaks" was irresponsible and dangerous for a lot of reasons. As obnoxious as she might have been on a lot of levels, I think it was a bit much to single out Jessie Slaughter the way they did, and she's hardly their first victim. I mention her because she's *FAIRLY* recent even though ancient history by internet standards, and also easy enough to look up (there is a section on her on Encyclopedia Dramatica as well, covered in their typical fashion).
Anonymous is hardly new, it's just that a lot of their most recent activities have been both public, and on a large scale. It's also noteworthy when a group manages to tweak the noses of goverments and major corperations and get away with it.
I don't think Anonymous is the good guys really, even if they do some good things from time to time. As they themselves point out, they really aren't, they are pretty much a force of elemental chaos that is interested in "lulz" beyond all else. They themselves are quite up front in saying they aren't the good guys, and warning people not to make the mistake of seeing them as white knights.
