Leave that to the biologists; us chemists are lazy bastards and just abbreviate or make up codemanes.
Tell that to the IUPAC. Seriously, organic chemistry nomenclature was so annoying to memorize.

Various haem oxygenases and peroxidases; we're trying to pin down the mechanism at the active site, but x-ray imaging isn't cutting it. I normally take the imaging side but at the minute I'm trying to coax neutron-quality crystals out of the various WTs and mutants we have knocking around. It's not easy.
Ah... to do an HSQC experiment again... -_-

Though to be fair, I'm no protein chemist (studied it at my master's but good lord, I didn't like it... no disrespect). I'm a (albeit former...) :( synthetic chemist & myrmecologist.

I found it fairly easy, being an algorithm and all. Worst was the old-school lecturer who insisted on us knowing the traditional names too :S

I got a bit fed up of synthetic work in my bachelor year (plus it's such a crowded market here) so switched to proteins. I love the interdisiplinary approach (taken plenty of classes in maths, stats and compsci so I get to move around the team a bit.

I feel unsynced with the rest of the forums. I cannot muster the interest to post in most of the threads, and I rarely feel strongly about the topics.

I've been feeling a pretty awful void somewhere in the area where I'd imagine one's heart to be ever since I realised that I'm a nobody who has nobody and will achieve nothing because of what he is and what he does (irrelevant and nothing, respectively). I can't even muster up the willpower to properly whine about it. Just... kind of drift from place to place and time to time.
Well, fuckin' whatevs, I s'pose.
You might want to talk to a therapist if that feeling gets worse...

Not exactly like I'm suicidal over here. Just a bit on the miserable side. You get used to it though over time. Kinda like pain, that. (got a fucked right foot, been hurting for so long I actually forget about it unless I do something particularly unpleasant)
That's why I said "if it gets worse", but preferably before you get suicidal. Depression is a rather complex diagnosis and not everyone with clinical depressions is suicidal, so should you feel worse, please go get help, since at the latter suicidal stages it is often too late, since suicide (at least as far as I know) is only the way out for people who do not feel they have the energy or willpower to do anything anymore and suicide is the only thing they can get muster up the energy to do, which is why some kill themselves before seeing a therapist.
Not saying that you are depressed, but you watch yourself.

This is what happens when I browse a lot of the time, people seem to get very worked up over certain topics that I really don't feel that passionately about. Most of the time my posts on topics like that would be asking people something along the lines of "why does this annoy you so much that you get angry about it?", "Isn't that a bit excessive?" or "Does it really matter" etc. I want actual discussion, not constant bickering.

We should talk about Rush.

Because as we all know, Rush is the greatest band of all time.

Captcha: too bad

Well fuck you captcha!
I disagree, Led Zeppelin and Genesis are better.

I haven't even heard much/any Rush's music and I can say that with confidence, that's how good Zep and Genesis are.

:D

/pettyfanboyism
Zz Top, Motley Crue, Blue Oyster Cult, Scorpions, Metallica, etc are better. I can say that with confidence, that's how good they all are.

What is the purpose of people putting their captchas at the end of their posts?

I mean, really? Who cares?

It's annoying. Cut it out.
They idea is that they post it if it says something funny or coincidentally related to what he/she was saying. There not doing it for no reason.

Err has anyone on here had been watching that cartoon show Gravity Fall? I'm quite suprise how good it is coming from the Disney channel. I guess it show they can make something good once in a while that isn't some live action teen show.
A yes. Cartoons is my subject. Gravity Falls is an excellent show. Something more people should watch but unfortunately because of it's network of origin, many will not give it a chance. (I'm lucky not to care about in which channel is what show). I really like how modern the show is. It's not trying to remind you of any era or be a throwback to some nostalgic property. It's its own thing. It's that kind of effort that I appreciate in today's shows.

Well, geographically, we're kinda buggered there... unless the Russians and Poles want to cut some sort of deal (yeah, not seeing that!) =P As for spiritually, well, for the most part, a lot of north Germany basically is quite Prussian (this is judging from the Germans I know...). No disrespect to Germans on Esc, but my German friends really fit the stereotype for the most part.

Still... touchy subject...

So, which period do you tend to go for? Rise under the Soldier-King, ascendancy under Frederick the Great, bouncing back from Jena-Auerstaedt, or the Unification? (think that ought to cover most of it)

Really? No one I know likes the missionary position. And bacon and egg... in a pie? I wasn't aware such a thing existed.

And, I'm sorry but this has to be said, OP your taste in beer is bad and you should feel bad.
How very dare you. Though Erdinger is my favourite, it's much easier to drink, but alas, not very ladylike.

What's your poison?

Grolsch is vastly superior to Heineken. Which is weak as piss, yet for some reason the most popular Dutch beer abroad. And even Grolsch is outclassed by the many special beers from small breweries around the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and possibly other countries as well.

I've no experience with Erdinger, however if it is more than bitter enough to make the face of your average 15 year old YOLO/Swag kid scrunch up in distaste then you may yet redeem yourself in my eyes.
Heineken ain't too bad! I went to the brewery museum in Amsterdam, it's pretty cool, and now I feel obliged to defend the Heineken brand :p

Perhaps the reason it's so popular abroad (or in the UK at least) is 'cos our own lagers like Fosters and Carling are even worse? Here it's presented as a more upmarket lager, along with Stella and the like.

Anyway, lager shmager. Bitter and ale is where it's really at. And Alcoholic ginger beer... :p

Also, what are peoples thought's on designer clothing? I've wondered whether other people here are bothered about it, or just see it as pointless extra cost just for a label or a name on your clothes? Personally, I can be rather a sucker for it, whilst realizing that it's utterly pointless in the grand scheme of things.

I've always wanted to talk about one of my favorite bands, "My Chemical Romance", but have always being a little afraid, given their unfair "emo" lable and this being the internet and all. So I'll just put it out there...fucking awesome band.

So...there. That's all I had to say.
That wasn't bad, but if we're talking things that gerard Way created then I still prefer Umbrella Academy. Book one was okay, but book two was great and showed some amazing enthusiasm for the medium.

Usually from Freddy the greaty to Wilhelm the secondy.
