I do as well. I recently developed an awesome fantasy/sci fi universe, sadly I was supposed to be learning about the wonders of sine cosine and tangent. Since that was the third time it happened that week, my math teacher flipped his shit.
While the maths details isn't what exactly how I was, I've had that exact same kind of setting for my universe (sadly, I've "borrowed" elements from legit works, so I can't put it to paper), and I've enjoyed creating stories based on what I can come up with, and recall.
I started this when I was... 12? And I've been able to keep myself entertained and some of my knowledge alive throughout the years.
The other issue I have except the legal matters is that no matter the medium I use, my thoughts are the only medium fast enough to keep up with what I think up: computers and paper... are too slow.
I'm also a bit anal when it comes to things... I prefer to be certain and "factual" when it comes to what I dream up. Even though there isn't any reference book regarding humans with Deus Ex style nano-machines in their system, or "sub-space" travel.
I suppose that us dreamers still have the "child-bone" in us somewhere, that imagines how things could be different. It makes us tick, and it makes us happy.
