You think that's bad? Teachers NEVER get fired here even if they are friggin sex offenders!
That varies on gender and looks. If the woman is a bombshell, she'll get a slap on the wrist and if she pouts a little, compensation for lost time. If ugly and female or male, they get fired, demonized, the works.

The reason why i bring this subject up is because i have recently been watching Jamie Oliver's food revolution. I was completely stunned by the reaction of the superintendent (i'm not really sure how important this position is) and how he is allowed to make a universal decision in regard to what children eat.

This just proves to me that the American education system fails at the most basic fundementals.

Please do NOT take this as an attack!!!
See...maybe you should reword things so it doesn't sound like an attack. This superintendent is only in charge of one school district, not all school districts. So saying you feel bad for American students. So you should really say you feel sorry for these students because of this case. And this is one example and not necessarily indicative of the entire school system across all of America. This one case proves only that school district in question has problems and highlights possible problems that could be nation wide.

Also, I do believe you that you weren't trying to attack, merely showing your out rage and sympathy for the students you saw. But there will be others that will use this as another launch point for an verbal attack on America.

Also lastly, I agree there are problems with the American education system but it isn't the food...well not just the food, sometimes the food was good and healthy. But the problem is underfunding and won't be solved with tv chefs coming in and making a salad.

Thankyou for giving me a little more insight into the subject, i understand that a TV chef such as Jamie Oliver can't fix everything. Our Schools (public) aren't great either but i was hoping for a much more mature response and that is why i mentioned it wasn't an attack. Perhaps i could of constructed my wording in a less offensive manner, nevertheless i do believe that all education systems can learn from each other rather than aggresively blocking them out.
Yeah, don't get me wrong, their are problems with the school system in America, but the problems for one district are vastly different that the problems in another. In the case of laws and schools, America shouldn't be looked at as a unified Nation or Country but rather a continent of different States with an over arching Federal Interstate Business government because that is what we have. So the problem in urban California are going to be vastly different than the problem in suburban Indiana and rural Kansas.

I have to go off the topic of food here and point out that America is NOT a continent of different states, it is a continent of different countries. Alaska, Canada and its provinces, aswell as South America (which, believe it or not is a part of the Americas)Mexico, Panama, Chile, Brazil, Columbia, Peru, Argentina, Venezuela and i could go on. USA IS NOT A CONTINENT
I was speaking metaphorically. I know America is not all of North America, but when the USA is larger than the continent of Australia and only slightly smaller than the continent of Europe, then one can make the comparison.

There are so many problems in our schools that aren't getting fixed, and they're all usually the result of too much politics. The lunches are just the tip of the iceberg. For example, now in Pennsylvania (where I live), school budgets are being cut, leading to awesome newer teachers being let go while old lazy ones stay. It frustrates me sometimes.
I also live in Pennsylvania, and what I normally see is the exact opposite. The older ones are being forced to retire so they don't have to pay them as much. In any case, we are living in a state where we are cutting our education expenses, defunding our state higher institutions, and not taxing the lucrative business that is destroying some of our ground water.

No, even the male teachers and ugly women do not get fired. They get put on probation and then have to be paid their full wages during their time (keeping their benefits too)

The teacher's union has made it nearly IMPOSSIBLE to clear out any teacher, regardless of their quality or creed.

I don't entirely get why that's a dick move? Surely it makes it harder to steal? maybe the qeues will be longer, but other than that I can't see why that would be such a bad thing. Maybe unnecessary.
It's annoying because parents can stop kids getting what they want. They can restrict them to main meals instead of a sandwich and a milkshake. It's seen as one step too far in the lower years.

American School Students - A.S.S , too tempting sorry.

well hate to be shown as more insensitive but it really isn't that surprising to me, mostly because all i know about the American education system is completely based off stereotypical rumours.

Bring your own food to school and there is no problem.
This struck me as just plain dumb, or maybe just not very well considered wording. kind of like Marie Antoinette's supposesd and famous quote "if the poor don't have bread to eat, why won't they eat pastries instead?"

I'm not entierly sure as to how the american schools' food system works, but in Sweden where I come from up until collage food is always included for free in schools.
And here it has been discussed that high quality food in school essential since poor families can't afford sending lunch boxes with their kids too school.

ahh the education system... the board is elected so technically they do represent the people, as for the whole bad teachers thing I know that the Ontario teachers union is very strong, their pension I believe is the majority owner of toronto maple leafs and I believe they put in a bid with some other companys to buy the toronto stock exchange tmx, as for school I cant complain yeah their are funding problems but schools cost a lot of money and between healthcare, policeing, education and mandatory services their isnt enough money to go around.

yeah but people on the escapist allways have a blame the parents attitude, so technically doing that should be a good thing as parents are making sure their kids are not getting fat, then again their is a lot of hypocrisy on this website...........

The problem comes down to funding. Schools are typically allotted a shockingly small amount of money with which to feed students, and the sad truth is that healthy food costs more than unhealthy food. That's also why you'll find McDonald's and other such fast food chains in schools, because the school needs the revenue. You wouldn't think that education would be so unimportant that it would have to scrape for every cent, but sadly, that's the current truth. The state of most public schools' textbooks is utterly depressing.

Also, if we're not supposed to take it as an attack, I'm curious, how are we supposed to take it? Condescending pity?

Still an attack whether you say it isn't or not based on tittle.
There's a school where children are required to eat the school lunch.

I appreciate all comments made regardless of them being negative or positive to what i have have said, everyone has the right to their opinion and i thankyou for that. One of the main reasons i made this thread was to get REAL comments on a situation i cleary am less informed about.

Feel free to point out what is YOU think is wrong with the ins and outs of Australia (if you have any thoughts on our laws) and i will be more than happy to answer your views

That must be a problem that I never saw, at my high school all they served us was healthy food and god was it bad. and I didn't go to a private school I went to a public school, it seems my school was one of the only ones to do this apparently.

Sorry i am sooooo stoopid, i keep forgetting that even the slightest attempt of even question american values is an attack, Yes it maybe a requirement to eat the school lunch but it does not mean you just feed them burgers and fried shit.

Okay, from reading all these posts, I get the gist of the matter. American school system sucks to the point of the need of an overhaul. One thing I don't understand is this: why is the school system being ignored so completely?

Here's something else that the American School system thinks is a good idea.
School District 51 pays the superintendent $50,000 (that is NOT an exaggeration) a year to drive to and from work. The superintendent lives 6 miles from his office.
So, the School District has had some cuts and now instead of cutting the driving allowance for the superintendent they fired all of their reading aids that they provide for K-5 students.

Let me repeat that because it bears repeating. The School District would rather pay some idiot to drive to and from work than pay for reading aids for students who only work 3 days a week.

Education needs a major reform in this country.

Sorry i did make that mistake of Alaska being a country and yes north and south America are considered seperate continents however for the sake of an arguement i was willing to combine the two and seeing as only one person noticed i guess it was worth it
