You know what I find depressing? Pseudo-intellectual arrogance.

So some people forgot BEDMAS/BODMAS/PEDMAS (whatever we're calling it these days) and missed the minus sign in the overall optical illusion. Big deal. Intelligence is more than a simple trick problem. This kind of thing is like calling people stupid for trying to pick up the coin that you secretly glued to the sidewalk. They're not stupid, they just didn't stop to think.

I'm pretty sure we're *all* guilty of this from time to time now, aren't we?

So that 1 x 0 = 0, but all the rest adds up to 14 if you follow the BIMDAS rule. At least I think it is, can't really remember seeing how I haven't done maths in about 3 years. But back OT: a lack of mathematic competence does not mean a person is smart, it just means they are bad at maths. If a person is consistently bad in all their subjects, then they would be considered dumb.

... wow basic algebra fail. I could give you all a memorization technique for order of operations but I'm too lazy. Are so many people on facebook really this braindead?

According to the order of operations(PEMDAS) you multiply the 0 and the 1, getting 0. Then you add 15(thats how many +1s there were) and subtract the sneaky -1. The result being 14

[edit] That was in response to everyone who asks why 0 isn't correct.

You get rid of one one by x zero
16, get rid of two ones by +1-1 and you get 14, all that is , is a stupid math problem with unnecessary mechanics in it. No one does math like that in real life no one it would be better this way.

It does, but it's only multiplying that last 1 by zero. You do multiplication before addition. So you multiply the zero by the one, and then you add up the rest of it.

because of the zero it would just be easier to say 15-1=?
Number one rules you never x 0 in fact that is why they taught that to you in school so you know to never use it. There are no practical uses for x0 the same amount and that 1+1+1+1+1+etc. is Taboo as well. Things we would never use besides using it to know not to use it.
That problem alone hurts my eyes.

I've always been taught that multiplying ANY number by zero equals 0

I'm with the 900,000+ people on this one unless someone can please show me how they got around the laws of numeracy by multiplying by 0 at the end and still getting a number above 0
First, you multiply 1 times zero. That = 0. Then you add all the 1's (and the -1) with that zero. That won't equal 0.

1+1x0 is gona be 1 becasue you do the multiplication before you add, it's simple maths direction.

you wouldn't turn a microwave on before you put your food in it now would you?

You do realise that people are going to glance at this, see the 1x0, and assume the answer is 0. Facebook quizzes arent particularly important, and theres no real reason to try get it right.
Regardless of the importance of it, it's still incorrect, and people when presented with quixxes generally give an honest attempt to 'get it correct' for the reason of comparing it to other people. We're competitive that way.

That doesn't change the fact that it is wrong, and hardly advanced math to understand order of operations.

Ni. I concur with....the vast majority of the people here. Missing this question does NOT make you an idiot. It just means that you're not a mathematician, or otherwise don't practice this much. In an age where any equation with numbers exceeding two, are much more efficiently solved via a calculator, anyone who wasn't thinking specifically about the Order of Operations isn't going to get it.


And yes, I had to look at it quite a few times before I figured out what was wrong. Nonetheless, this is an extremely inappropriate view of the intelligence of humanity. Its just like those propaganda-esque 'video games kill you' studies. They find a few facts, like specific brain impulses going off, and link it to 'real world' effects.



On the subject, you know the fact that if you see a bunch of gore on a screen, that your brain stops lighting up to such stimulus? You know what they never test? After seeing this gore done on screen, they never then perform such acts in the real world, to see if their brain responds. This is for obvious reasons, and I don't suggest anyone try it, but it stands to reason that one cannot assume that someone's mind can't tell the difference between real-life gore, and fake gore.
