Not completely true. I'm a bartender and I occasionally have to do double digit multiplications on the spot. Such as 12.50 X 12. Usually it's more like 5.50 X 5, or 4.25 X 12. Or adding up multiple drinks with different prices at the same time. Realistically if I were to draw out some tabs on paper, I'd have to use parenthesis and such, but it's a bit different when you do it in your head.

also, the equation is correct.

1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1-1+1+1+1+1+1+1*0 does in fact equal 0 since no matter what or how you try to find the answer, anything times zero will always be zero.

The fundamental rules of math prove you wrong, however. You need to follow the order of operations, which dictates a certain manner in which you solve an equation. You start off with the parenthesis, then the exponents, then division/multiplication, and finally addition/subtraction. From left to right. Following this novice knowledge, you will see that 1*0 is the first operation in that equation. Followed by adding 1 to zero however many times it is written up there.

While you may not need to know this to tie your shoes, it is certainly important if you have pretty much any job that pays more than around minimum wage.

To be technical *puts on his technical glasses*, you have to define the quantities you are multiplying, subtracting, and adding. It's merely a notation question with a "trick" slid in.

Since the quantities weren't defined by parentheses, one would assume 1+1+1+1x0 would equal 3. But the equation could have a different answer depending on how you group the numbers. (1+1+1+1)x0 equals 0.

On the off chance you like to troll, touche.

i've seen that question too. posted a status update about it, basically calling everyone who answered 0 to be dumb and should go back to elementary school.

Pemdas Shmemdas.

Problem solving is but one of several measures of intelligence. Math skills may be falling in the general population, but social skills and reasoning seem to be improving as I see it, and I meet far more multilingual people lately. Maybe there is a shift in intelligence, not a decline or "lack of."

However kiddo, you did do one thing right. And that's explaining this without an ounce of conceit. So being as I'm not a total asshole, my hat goes off to you for that.

Okay, so most people tend to forget PEDMAS. I don't see that as a lack of intelligence. Hell, it took me fucking forever before I realized what the problem was.

You're overreacting dude. Math isn't the only realm of intellect.

But if you multiply anything by 0 don't you always get 0?

Okay, so you don't treat everything in this problem as a term.
if you did
(x)0=0; X=all reals :You win a cookie
if you do
1+1(0)=X then by doing algebra we see that X equals 1
( PEMDAS) you'd do multiplication of the term 1st, then you'd do addition in the above problem, then you'd do subtraction. AGAIN: WHEN NOT IN PARENTHASEES THEY ARE INDIVIDUAL TERMS.

As elementary as this type of math is, I am not surprised that some people could get it wrong. For many, numbers and their operations are straight up confusing. Is it depressing? Sure it is, especially when such a big number of people get it wrong but I guess the best the rest of us can do is educate them on where they went wrong, in a constructive and polite manner.

so the answer is 14. Almost said 16 but then I noticed the minus in the middle derp. Honestly I'm just glad it's second, I've always known people are stupid, or at least bad at simple math. I lost my faith in humanity a long time ago.

These kinds of posts really bug me.
Using a silly, poorly written math problem to justify their superiority complex.
The answer, this coming from a 4th year education student with a major in mathematics, is 14 for the reasons said before. The people who are getting zero are simply reading the question differently.
My arguement would be that if someone in their real every day life got this question it would have some kind of context to it that would have much more value then the way its written on a peice of paper. In the context of the situation the answer could very well be zero. So if someone thinks the answer is zero their not stupid they just aren't used to losers like the OP trolling their ass.
