I'm constantly presumed to be a pirate because I have an iPhone. (Really?)

There are a couple other people at work with iPhones or similar devices that are constantly asking where I download my music and how I convert my DVDs to MP4 and sync them to my iPhone.

"CDs and Digital Copies."

"What?"

Yeah...
I still can't figure out why that movie was popular >>

OT... take your pick. I've been insulted for just about everything in my life, stupid or not. <<

You too?! O_O

Anyways, yes I've been insulted for reading in my spare time, but also for wearing a hat, for being white and for getting perfect scores in my school subjects. I've been standing this all my entire life. Mexico is full of racists and retarded people. Not everyone is though, but a good amount it.

getting insulted for buying music is fair enough. why do musicians need money? they clearly already have instruments or you wouldnt be able to hear anything. I think free music is a good thing., people should make music for the fact they like making music not for fame and fortune. if they want money they should go and tour.

I haven't been made fun of for buying music, mostly it's "Why the hell would you do that?" But I usually buy straight from the artist's personal website instead of buying from iTunes or on CD.

Also, as far as stupid things to be made fun of I got all kinds of comments about being the top of my class in school. People called me things like "smart kid" or "overachiever" like it was a bad thing or something.
America hates brains. Which is why we've gone from putting people on the moon to "Sarah Palin's Alaska."
I'm actually Canadian, but I know exactly what you mean. This is quite a redneck community I've got here
Ironically, I tossed in "America" because I didn't want to say "we" as though "we" dominated the world. XD

I get a lot of "you think you're so smart" comments. Most of it's not even for being super intellectual or knowing anything useful, but rather for being able to do research, tell an article from an opinion piece, or other basic logical things.

It's not like I go around talking about astrophysics or DNA expressions.

I dared to give The Dark Knight a four out of five instead of a perfect five.

Can't wait to see how people react when I tell them that I think Cowboy Bebop is the Dark Knight of anime; I can understand why people love it, I just feel that the qualities are blown WAY out of proportion.
What damaged The Dark Night for me is Christian Bales batman voice, and the fact that the movie explains too damn much, but Heath Ledgers performance saved it, but I've never been insulted for my opinion. I do think Tim Burtons batman was better.

OT: I have been insulted for being a Christian. Someone was just giving me a bunch of crap for it, and they're the one that started the conversation. Seriously how freaking miserable do you have to be to get pissy when you find out someone believes in God.

I buy all my music and I never got why someone wouldn't, because to download it for free is stealing according to the government, so why do that if you aren't going to do other illegal activity? Probably because you feel safe inside your home, like no one can see you and the likes

Ok I have to word this carefully to avoid moderator wrath....

With movies and videogames the only experience is the product so piracy is technically removing the chance of income and therefor it can be argued that piracy is a moral wrong.
However where music differs is in the distribution and consumption. When purchasing an album the money goes to the record company who then keeps between 88 and 95 percent of the money, the remainder is used toward paying for the advance, recording, promotion, manufacturing, distribution etc, which means that the artist/band only start receiving royalties once they have sold quite a high volume usually in the Millions.

It then becomes arguable that if you were to download the bands entire back catalogue instead of purchasing and subsequently attend one concert, even if the ticket price is the same as one album, you would be contributing more to the artist than someone who had purchased every album as the artist receives 100 percent of the ticket (minus venue hire etc)

It is a very tricky subject to discuss on the escapist as they are quite keen to suspend for even mentioning piracy in a positive light, but let me leave you with this, if (and granted it is a large if) all artists started releasing their recorded works for free, would the artists be making the same amount of money they do now and would they still feel the need to make music for a specific demographic or would it liberate the artists from chasing sales to sustain their fan base?

you are wrong. bands do not keep much money from ticket prices at all. think about it you pay 20 dollars for a concert ticket. that has to pay for a bus a bus driver, somewhere for the driver to sleep, food for yourself, your own merch cds exc, guitar strings drum heads excc that need to be replaced and half a billion other things.

I am currently working hard to prove you can record an album for free (more of an EP atm) so hopefully it will stand as proof that you don't need to spend millions in a studio, you just need to bash it out in a couple of weeks, white stripes style
And that is awesome but sadly, it is the exception and not the norm.

What kind of stuff do you do?

You pay for music, pfft why bother when you can just steal it...............................

*This is a joke and I strongly encourage paying for your music, movies and video games. Help the industry instead of being part of the problem.
Thank god I read to the bottom of your post otherwise there would have been many a strong word in my reply!
