I got insulted repeatedly for owning a Gamecube instead of PS2 during the Gamecube/PS2 and Xbox era. I also got insulted of liking the Nintendo DS during the early days it was release.

So apparently record labels do nothing for a band now?

Sure you loose the good bands, but now a days, they're not making as much as the crappy pop singers.
They aren't making much money so it doesn't matter if they go away? What kind of ridiculousness is this?!

Please tell me I'm misinterpreting what you're saying here.

I don't know about that. That's a near impossible scenario. For one, there are a lot of musicians who are swimming in funds, and could live their entire life comfortably without making a single dollar more. Secondly, there are even more musicians who aren't at all doing what they do for the income. Take away the money, and they'd still be doing what they do to the extent they can. Music is a calling, and it's hard to walk away from, money or no money.
I couldn't give a shit about the bands 'swimming in funds' (of which there are probably less than you imagine). I give a shit about all the bands who work hard just to break even at the end of the day. And please don't spew that bullshit about not caring about the money. Since when did it become a bad thing to want to earn an income from doing what you love?

Thirdly, and this is important to stress, album sales is not the most lucrative source of income for professional musicians. They make a lot more on concerts and merchandise sales. You want to support your favorite band? Go see them live, buy a t-shirt. Buying their album makes an arguably superfluous link in the chain richer (the record company), but it doesn't really affect the artist much.
Buhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Preaching to the choir here. I am fully aware that a band doesn't make much money from CD sales. I go to shows. I buy t-shirts. I buy CDs at shows. But where does the funding for the band's recording costs (among other expenditures) to make their music come from? Record labels! What happens if we have no record labels? Bands have to pay for all of that themselves! On the measly amounts of money they already get I don't think that's going to happen.

Oh, and liking J-Pop. Can't forget that.
What's wrong with J-pop that you got insulted for liking?

OT: My D&D group gave me grief (not insulting me, just busting my balls a little) for liking Sailor Moon (I see no shame in that whatsoever).

How do artist even make money anymore? That music you're stealing is somebody else's intellectual property.
Wow sorry, what a really dumb thing to say.(No Offense)

Let us face facts boys and girls, every time you buy a CD, iTunes, etc that money goes straight to the recording label, where the artist gets maybe 2-5% royalties (this number can change based on how "big" the artist is, meaning Metallica, and other bigger names get more for royalties). Artists really make money from touring, shows, etc. So if you really want to support a band attend a concert, buy merchandise from the concert, because honestly that cd purchase is almost meaningless.
This seems like something fairly appropriate to post [http://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=111952525523252&id=1297394525]. If nothing else, it is certainly interesting.
Maybe it's just the region I'm in, but I didn't think "Oh, Sleeper" was a mid-range band. I kind of figured they were actually quite popular...
And yet they still make $13/day/member from touring.

Just another example of artists/inventors/musicians etc. thinking that because they have an "idea" or create something they are entitled to the lions share.

If they feel like they are getting ripped off then go do it yourself. Produce your' own music, market it , stage your' own gigs.
Oh wait, you can't.

Ok I have to word this carefully to avoid moderator wrath....

With movies and videogames the only experience is the product so piracy is technically removing the chance of income and therefor it can be argued that piracy is a moral wrong.
However where music differs is in the distribution and consumption. When purchasing an album the money goes to the record company who then keeps between 88 and 95 percent of the money, the remainder is used toward paying for the advance, recording, promotion, manufacturing, distribution etc, which means that the artist/band only start receiving royalties once they have sold quite a high volume usually in the Millions.
There is a missing argument in your statement. While I agree that going to concerts is good for the artist, that doesn't justify this.

You're missing a premise in your argument.

You introduce the premise 'The artist makes very little money from the sales of albums' and reach the conclusion 'Dick the artist out of what little money they make from the sales of albums.'

I'm just saying... if you told me 'You're only making 5% of how much this costs, so therefore you're not entitled to that 5%' I would call you a dick. You need something in between there to justify that.

And no 'Go to concerts' isn't an answer... you're still consuming the product denying them their 5%.
You are missing my point, if you buy the album they don't get a penny unless they have have already sold millions of cds, so what you are denying them is usually nothing, there are a lot of bands who are so sick of being dicked around with money that they tell their fans to come see them live and just download their tunes for free.

The problem is that record companies have only ever offered three things, recording, distribution and advertising.
Since recording technology has become so cheap I can afford it and the internet offers free distribution, the only true benefit is advertising, so the only reason to sign a deal now is that you don't believe your music can stand on it's own and you need advertising to convince people, this industry is on it's last legs, and before something dies it always shits itself and that is what x factor and all this prefabricated bullshit is, the industry shitting itself as it dies

I am currently working hard to prove you can record an album for free (more of an EP atm) so hopefully it will stand as proof that you don't need to spend millions in a studio, you just need to bash it out in a couple of weeks, white stripes style

I've gotten insulted by a number of people for the past few days because I told someone I buy all my music...does that make any sense at all? Sorry that I support those that work their asses of to make it so you have the music you like to listen to.

For discussion value, have you ever been insulted for something utterly retarded?
Play TF2 as a Pyro. Hilarity ensues. Then there's the time I got chastised and said I was going to hell for not drinking.

Red Right Hand said:
The shit thing is that the people that have "worked their asses off" still only see a tiny fraction of the money you spend. If they're a small band they might only see like 1% of the cost of the album. I really hate the fact that almost all of it goes towards the label and the producers rather than the artists. Its bullshit. Because you're right, they should get rewarded for working their asses off but in typical capitalist fashion the big businessmen use their magic to make all of the money disappear before it can reach the hands of the people that do the real work.

Not that I agree or disagree, but the music industry has changed a lot. Nowadays, you have more individual labels going it alone than in one of the Big Four. Just sayin, it may be time to look at the fact that this can't happen as much because artists have more options than they did in the 90s.
I wish that were the case but the truth is all the independents from the 90's got bought by the majors and just retain their name, to keep the air of indie around them whilst dicking the bands the same as if the were signed straight to the major. You got it a little backwards sorry dude
