I've been insulted for being named "James".

I quite like the name James, and even if I didn't, it still wasn't my choice to be named that.
I, too, am named James, and I think it's a pretty nice name as well. That's also a very petty thing to insult someone over.

I've gotten insulted by a number of people for the past few days because I told someone I buy all my music...does that make any sense at all? Sorry that I support those that work their asses of to make it so you have the music you like to listen to.

For discussion value, have you ever been insulted for something utterly retarded?
Play TF2 as a Pyro. Hilarity ensues. Then there's the time I got chastised and said I was going to hell for not drinking.

The shit thing is that the people that have "worked their asses off" still only see a tiny fraction of the money you spend. If they're a small band they might only see like 1% of the cost of the album. I really hate the fact that almost all of it goes towards the label and the producers rather than the artists. Its bullshit. Because you're right, they should get rewarded for working their asses off but in typical capitalist fashion the big businessmen use their magic to make all of the money disappear before it can reach the hands of the people that do the real work.

Not that I agree or disagree, but the music industry has changed a lot. Nowadays, you have more individual labels going it alone than in one of the Big Four. Just sayin, it may be time to look at the fact that this can't happen as much because artists have more options than they did in the 90s.

I was pretty popular in high school. The only people I didn't get along with were the extremely antisocial (sadly) and the elitist (essentially just self-righteous nerds). Even the super rich kids were more open minded than the XKCD comic lovers.

At the University of Notre Dame, my alma mater, I was insulted for not being especially into the football team. I just don't feel a connection to a team where I don't personally know a single player on the team. Yeah ... given the number of school I was accepted at Notre Dame was the wrong chocie.

I wonder how all the music pirates are going to feel if they drive all musicians out of their artistic medium due to the lack of funds.

A rather extreme idea perhaps but it bears thinking about.
I don't know about that. That's a near impossible scenario. For one, there are a lot of musicians who are swimming in funds, and could live their entire life comfortably without making a single dollar more. Secondly, there are even more musicians who aren't at all doing what they do for the income. Take away the money, and they'd still be doing what they do to the extent they can. Music is a calling, and it's hard to walk away from, money or no money.

Thirdly, and this is important to stress, album sales is not the most lucrative source of income for professional musicians. They make a lot more on concerts and merchandise sales. You want to support your favorite band? Go see them live, buy a t-shirt. Buying their album makes an arguably superfluous link in the chain richer (the record company), but it doesn't really affect the artist much.

I get insulted for liking to read. What.

I also got shit cuz I said I value gameplay more than the story in a VIDEO GAME.
I've always questioned the view that story is more important. There's certainly loads of hard evidence to the contrary such as N, SMB, TF2... The list is endless.

I was insulted today at work because I've never seen Die Hard.
My co-worker proceeded to tell everybody who came in "can you believe this girl has never seen Die Hard?" and they all played along.

It was completely ridiculous.

I once got insulted for playing video games, specifically the N64. People at my school thought it was weird.

Unless you're playing all the time instead of hanging out with your pals or rubbing you high level charizard or whatever on their face, I don't see why you would get insulted for that

Someone I know, don't like people who buy music, because he literally thinks that the companies who publish the music are "evil".

1) i descided i'd sleep rather than doing nothing but play call of duty: black ops untill stupidly early in the morning, when thats all we had done, every night, for the last month!

2) i suggested my friend, who had never seen any of the star wars films, should see them. Apparently suggesting that and liking star wars makes me gay. =S

3) I descided i should probably do some work at work instead of doing nothing. I had a lot of work to do and i'd get a bolocking if i didn't do it. My colleage descided that was a stupid choise.

4) i have a Wii, wait it gets worse, i play games on my Wii, oh god the horror!!

Yeah...
This has happened to me too. Personally I just really didn't like the movie. Mostly because I wanted to slug the protagonist. Knew a guy like him once, annoyed the hell out of me.

I've been called an arrogant snot for my obsession with science. Fortunatly, I am an arrogant snot, so I don't really care what the peasents bleat. Generally, people that insult you because you follow the law and work to make society function are too [REDACTED] to be worth the time and energy of feeling insulted. Take their anger as a compliment.

If you're constantly buying CDs without first hearing the music on it (which in some peoples eyes, and I don't consider it an invalid PoV, is easiest done via pirating, try-before-you-buy method), I can see why some would view you as gullible (but frankly if you can afford it, more power to you, it's definitely not something you should be insulted for, it's the "right" thing to do). And I'm not sure what sort of music you listen to, but a typical person listens to a number of musicians who get paid more than what they need to live more than comfortably.

Viewing piracy as utter evil and capitalism as an angel sent from God is, with all due respect, not a point of view I can agree much on, in fact I find it really gullible and a simple minded view that probably hasn't really been given too much thought (again, no offense by it, I can see why one would accept such a view, but that doesn't mean I even remotely agree with it).

Fact is, both have bad points but are combined two ideas that function well together (at least as far as copyright protection goes), capitalism gives those who majorly get pirated more than what they need (and frankly, deserve) and those who would get screwed over by the capitalism can use piracy to mitigate the negative effect of it and enjoy their life without really hurting anyone.

The little guys who you'd think would be "unjustly" hurt by piracy actually get pirated very little - the less you're famous, the harder it is to find your work hosted by a sufficient number of people to share it. Those who pirate also generally tend to understand what it means to be a little guy too so they also spend what money they can afford supporting those.

That's also putting aside the fact what a lot of little guys generally need (if they're good) is promotion and that piracy actually works towards that because if you're short on cash, why would you use it to buy some less famous person's work when there's better ones out there (for generally the same or similar price)? Piracy works around that and lets people try the music/films/games they can't afford and you'd be surprised at the number of people who do that only to buy the original disc later, go to a band's concert, buy the following albums, sequels and such (assuming they enjoy the work obviously).

Piracy!=stealing, you're not taking anything away and you're not making a profit off of someone else's work, you're just enjoying an experience, much like if there was a Ferris wheel capable of hosting 50 people at a time that never used more than 30 seats, you could be nice and give some 20 unprivileged kids a free ride without really losing a damn thing (piracy doesn't even have the effect of having to wipe the butt stains off your Ferris wheel seats and stuff, it really doesn't even touch upon the creator, distributor etc. in the sense they need to do something for it to work).

Well in the same avenue, I got laughed at/called a game fanatic when I bought an original disc for a game. But that's a lot to do with the fact Serbia didn't have copyright laws for a long long time and with our economic standard in mind, buying originals as opposed to buying a pirated disc on the street/market was viewed as ridiculous and just money burning, effectively similar to buying really pricey fancy name-brand clothes rather than something out of a casual shop.

It's a generational thing. Some people adore it, other find it immensely boring due to it's incredibly slow pace. I'm afraid I'm one of the latter (though the dance at the end was hilarious).
