Merchandise and tours. They only get a fraction of the money made from selling the CDs.

I got insulted for being good at physics...
And who funds the tours and makes the merchandise? Oh yeah, its the record company who makes money off the CD sales... D'OH!

I've been insulted for not HATING the Star Wars prequels, and all of the UE material attached to them. It apparently wasn't enough that I acknowledged all of the flaws, but was still capable of liking them to some extent.

Also (especially online) for liking ANY game on a console more than its PC counterpart.

Actually no. Not always. Many tours are organised by other companies. Take the Rockstar tour I recently went to, that was funded by none other than the energy drink Rockstar (of which I got two free cans of. Awesome!)

I've been insulted for loving Lord of the Rings:
Me: "Tomorrow night I'm going to see The Two Towers with a live orchestra at Radio City"
Person: "That's pretty gay dude"

The fraction depends on the record company, independants are usually more respectful of their artists than the huge brainwashing ones: for example, Metropolis [http://www.metropolis-records.com] and Out of Line [http://www.outofline.de] are awesome :)

Yeah...
Same here. I don't see what is so great about a film that looks like some eighth grader with a camcorder shot...

OT: My close friend pirates EVERYTHING and says I'm a drone for buying my music...

I'm pretty certain there will a buttload of tours that aren't sponsored and organised in that way. I've found stuff like that tend to be like mini-travelling festivals showcasing current popular bands. What about all the tours with a single main act?

Ok I have to word this carefully to avoid moderator wrath....

With movies and videogames the only experience is the product so piracy is technically removing the chance of income and therefor it can be argued that piracy is a moral wrong.
However where music differs is in the distribution and consumption. When purchasing an album the money goes to the record company who then keeps between 88 and 95 percent of the money, the remainder is used toward paying for the advance, recording, promotion, manufacturing, distribution etc, which means that the artist/band only start receiving royalties once they have sold quite a high volume usually in the Millions.
There is a missing argument in your statement. While I agree that going to concerts is good for the artist, that doesn't justify this.

You're missing a premise in your argument.

You introduce the premise 'The artist makes very little money from the sales of albums' and reach the conclusion 'Dick the artist out of what little money they make from the sales of albums.'

I'm just saying... if you told me 'You're only making 5% of how much this costs, so therefore you're not entitled to that 5%' I would call you a dick. You need something in between there to justify that.

And no 'Go to concerts' isn't an answer... you're still consuming the product denying them their 5%.

I still love the idea that it's ok to download music because the artist doesn't get much of the profits.

It's still taking money away from other people, not least the real life shops that are shutting down. That's real people losing their jobs because people think they're entitled to act morally superior when getting something for free.

Like I said. Expert economists.

Guess what? If no one buys your bands' albums, you're probably not going to stay signed for very long! I can sit here and throw out valid, logical counter-arguments just as long as you can attempt to pull random junk out of your backside to justify people not having any obligation to buy music.
