In short,
Incomprehensible story
Badly paced gameplay
Overrated
Overpublicised by main stream media
Social stigmas that are growing around it that aren't ironic or funny
Badly balanced multiplayer (by which I mean look at peoples most killed by stats on BlOps, Famas AK74u Galil without fail)
The vocal minorities in the community
Overpriced DLC
Activision
Annual updates sold at full price
Bobby Kotick is an idiot
The idiots on XBL/PSN/Hell even the PC game once in a while
Everyone still Plays 1 2 and 4 on PC for a reason
Along with those reasons above

It's the worst example of videogames trying to be the movies. Stupid, tedious, boring, and generic schlock just to keep the masses interested. The worst part is that it's actually working

HOPEFULLY, the $15 a month fee is gonna turn the public off of Modern Warfare 3, and instead buy Battlefield 3.

I don't hate COD, I've never really railed against it at all. I'm just... over military shooters. Whenever I see something with a soldier on the box I just think "meh, same old same old", and I'm always right. Can we please go back to the days when Unreal Tournament was the game you played at LAN parties? Then we can at least have some interesting weapons and unique maps to play on, instead of boring carbon copy "real" firearms and every second map set in identical third world desert towns in Whogivesafuckistan.

I hate it because it's a competent shooting game that is MASSIVELY overrated and overhyped, it also sells too well regardless of the quality of the game as a whole including single player campaign (which has been poor to mediocre since Cod4). I also hate it because it has no originality, no innovation and the emotional depth/artistic merit of a cup of tea.

Do CoD haters realise that CoD is a good thing for the gaming industry? Think of how many people were brought into gaming due to to CoD. The more people we get into gaming the more it's going to be accepted in the mainstream, like music, literature or film. The presence of CoD in gaming is a good thing, as it has helped make gaming more (not much) of a widely accepted thing.

On the other hand though, publishers and developers need to realise that the "CoD killer", is most likely not going to be like CoD, and cloning CoD just to make sales isn't going to help the industry. Publishers need to stop only putting money into these CoD clones, and start putting money into real innovation, and developers need to start taking risks.

Just a quick note, I only read about half the first page, so if anyone's already said this, good job.

mainly i belive it's because they realese the same game each year with a different gimmick or the same gimmick with an added map and the landslide of bastard children each one of which is bland boring and all them trying to be CoD.

I hate it because as much as I know it's stale and repetitive I can't help but buy the next one. It's like an abusive wife/husband.

Because it is influencing other shooters negatively. Other shooters trying to build on whole other gameplay elements have to adept CoD elements in because that's the only way to really sell a shooter these days. CoD is too big, it would be great if one game could be like this and other like that, but it doesn't work like that. Same approach is seen in music, it's why all mainstream music comes closer and closer together. Let's say band X, they became all big and had to 'borrow' Genre X elements in order to sustain that and appeal to the masses.

I hate COD because it abandoned what made it great. IE a great single player campaign based in WWII that let you play as the Americans, the British, and the Russians. Again, the great single player campaign that differentiated itself from the other WWII games and gave you a view besides the Americans. Crossing the Volga and going into Stalingrad, watching the man in front of me being handed a Mosin 44 carbine, and I was given a 5 round stripper clip of 7.62x54 rounds so I could pick up his rifle when he was mowed down by German MG42s was one of the most powerful and immersive moments I've ever seen in a game. Just before that, a man jumped over the side of the boat on the way across the Volga after they received fire from Messerschmitt's, and the officers fired on him, to show that cowards and retreaters would be shot on sight. It worked because it was true. Those exact situations happened during the siege of Stalingrad, it was portraying actual human beings under the harshest of situations.

That's why I don't like COD now. They're crafting their own wank off scenarios with hypothetical invasions and gun pron. There's no weight or meat to it. Being killed in COD MW 2 while fighting some nondescript Russians or Middle Easterners who just want to blow up the world for the lulz doesn't quite cut it. I seriously doubt the Taliban are out in force with G36's and FN-P90's, full body armor, and riot shields shooting it out in cave against freelance soldiers. It could happen, but I think the first two Call of Duty games were the best. They combined history with enjoyable games. And I do have a soft spot for Infinity Ward, since they made the first Medal of Honor for PS and it was one of my favorite games. (Well, the important people from the first Medal of Honor series founded Infinity Ward.)

I dislike the FPS mindset that came with CoD, not that it wasn't there before, but it wasn't as common as it is now. As like WW2 was overdone, I think modern day warfare is being overdone. Innovate people!

Title pretty much says it all... Why is COD so incredibly hated (well among people who probably would consider themselves "hardcore gamers")? I mean, i aint no fan of COD, i've tried every single game, but i just feel that by Black Ops, it's kind of just the same..
But my hate is no way near the amounts that pretty much every gaming forum has for COD, and i never really understood it..

So yeah.. Why the immense hate for one of the best selling videogame franchises ever?
I can't speak for everyone, but I dislike COD because how it kind of "dumbs down" games. Honestly I enjoyed some of the story modes for the WW2 COD games and I do enjoy the multiplayer for other reasons.

But how the games are set out becomes tired and predictable this is why you hear even the most avid COD fan preach about how much they are sick of the game and want a new version with one or two new features. Take the single player campaign for example, they tend to be short, separated out into set pieces often used to give a "wow" factor (seeing a nuke from space, almost falling off a cliff, etc), but they have become a predictable part of the franchise and so the devs feel the need to up the anti with more and more set pieces (most of which now do not enhance the story telling).

There are other things I don't like about the story but they are for another day.

The multiplayer on the other hand is another kettle of fish, in fact it is only there to beef out the game past it's lacking story. I will admit I find it enjoyable because of how easy I find it to pick up the game and play, but both of these factors add more problems to the game. Take Black Ops as an example, this is a fairly balanced game, I find little advantage of using certain guns over others (apart from personal preference); though I would like to add that the speciality weapons like the shotgun and sniper are lacking but only slightly. Yet people find excuses, like "ghost pro should be removed because it messes with my game".

This is because the multiplayer is the core and people are trying to make up for the lack of single player by emulating the experience online. And not everyone can be a hero online.

Wow that was a lot of text there.....sorry.

Basically how I see it.

1. Too Many Trolls on the Dance Floor: Do I need to explain this?

2. Arguably Unbalanced Gameplay: If an assault rifle can shoot the same range as a sniper effectively as well as do rather well at close combat, whats the point of a sniper?

3. Cash Cow: Add a few new maps and guns, then POW! A whole new game to make millions off of.(And the Story, which was alright, just way too short)

4. Just Another Shooter: This one is definitely more opinion based than the others, but I for one am sick and tired of FPSs. Also, teamwork is not really necessary in the game. Everybody just goes for "t3h k1l15 101". If i want to play an FPS, i'll stick with TF2, at least that has more emphasis on teamwork.

5. "It'5 r341i5t1c"(realistic): Depressing, I know. However, I see a lot of people actually think that this game is entirely realistic. Just this gives me a biased opinion after playing it and hearing that.

The only Call of Duty games I really, really enjoyed were Call of Duty 2 and Call of Duty 4. I have not played 1 or 3, but World at War, Black Ops, and Modern Warfare 2 were all mediocre and not very fun to me.

Completely agree. Other games need to try new things instead of copying Cod (Looking at you Medal Of Honour)
Oh, so CoD never copied anyone? lolol. Where've you been living?

The game's been a Halo clone since 4, except even worse single player and boring multi player. Halo itself was more of a Q3/UT clone, except a bad one. Yes, I'm a PC gamer who thinks that Q3 and UT were exceptional death fests, like Serious Sam. I'm also one of those strange people who thinks Brink is a "21st century" update of those games and thus totally freaking awesome.

@OP
If it's any consolation, Brink is getting more hate than CoD ever will. Which is kinda funny, CoD can't even suck well. :p
I think it's fair to say all games copy each other, but seriously play the new MOH, Same Controls, same style of game play, basically COD with a different name.

And Halo and COD are 2 different games, the only similarity is that they are a popular FPS franchise...

I never saw the Russians invading with Plasma Rifles or Banshee's.....think i just created the future COD o_O

Oooh btw, i never said COD doesn't copy anyone, i'm just saying other companies should stop copying off it.

1. They release a new version of the game every year, causing a mass migration of players to the new game, destroying the previous game's community.
2. Too many little kids screaming on the mic then they threaten to hack your account.
3. Kills streaks are just too over powered.
4. People just crack the shits over any shot that was a complete fluke and claim it is hacking.

the game is, in a vacuum brilliant on its own no Russian shows just how awesome games can tell stories. Its just every single thing in any way associated with the game that's horrible. The effect on the reputation, the effect effect on gaming as a whole, the fans, the marketing and so on and so on.

Most references I've seen towards CoD hate are always either due to it being so popular or because of the trolling on multiplayer, particularly on Xbox Live.

Personally I've never actually hated a CoD game, I played Black Ops and wasn't satisfied with the single player campaign, but my dissatisfaction wasn't enough to destroy the strong bond I've built with it playing Modern Warfare 1 and 2. But then again I play with my friends in LAN parties in the golden land of the PC, not on Xbox Live Trolltopia.

I read an article the other day saying that CoD has become just as natural a sport to some people as shooting a few hoops on a lazy afternoon, and I agree with that. Multiplayer gameplay is always fast-paced and exciting, and always noisy and fun when you play with your friends.

I like it because it's fun. If I had to guess, people who don't like CoD probably think that Call of Duty players are the jocks of the videogame world and are typically depicted as such in webcomics and the like because said trolling on Xbox Live sounds a lot like a jock ranting over a nerd.
