I have decided to classify Metroid: Other M as fanfiction.

Eff you, Team Ninja. It's bad enough that you're unable to handle strong female characters in your own games, you had to go and get your dirty mitts on Samus, the protype strong female gaming character, and turn her into a whiny little girl with daddy issues who happens to have a high powered alien suit. What's next, having her play volleyball with your DOA girls?

I mean, we're talking about SAMUS ARAN. Ass-kicker extraordinaire. The thing that was so amazing about her to begin with was that her gender was a legitimate surprise. Sure, later games showed her to be attractive, but she was an alien-ass kicker first.

Now all the sudden, she needs a man to tell her what to do and what weapon to use? Malkovich was a bit grating in Metroid: Fusion but Samus had to deal with him, rather than simper around trying to earn his freaking approval. This is NOT the character I have played all these years. I don't need her to be silent and stoic, and having maternal feelings for a Metroid could have been made to work well, but this? Absolute travesty.

Then it occurred to me: A story involving familiar character names yet seem to bear only a cosmetic relationship to the characters? Awkward execution (gorram first person missiles) and questionable plot? This, my friends, is fan-fiction. I won't hear otherwise, not even from Nintendo.

As to add to this thread actually, yes it was a crappy game making samus look horrible and weak etc and it will die in history while the prime games live on in memory. While there are good fanfiction (believe me, I swear), I do see where you're coming from. I too regard Other M as non-canon for it's atrocious story and horrendous gameplay.

Mind you, I hate the gameplay more than I hate the story because on more than one occasion, I got stuck and couldn't progress with the story.

The entire time I was playing it all I could think of is how Edward Cullen should have been lurking in the background. It really felt like a fanfic future version of Twilight. Is there some cultural meeting I missed (by not being a 13 year old girl) where everyone decided women should start acting like this? I would chalk it up to Team Ninja just being Team Ninja but the similarities with Samus and Bella are so striking it can't just be the jiggle physics talking.

I don't play much Metroid games(or Nintendo games in general, save Kirby), but I admire Team Ninja for having the balls to give a nearly one dimensional character some depth.

That doesn't change the fact that the dialogue and voice acting in that game was just horrendous.

Not to mention the game breaking glitch that happened to about 20% of those that tried to finish the game that required sending an sd card to Nintendo for them to put the install patch on because with out jail breaking the Wii has no patching capacity.

All joking aside, I see it as a failed attempt. People have to look at it from nintendo's view. They need to make money, so they roll out a new metroid. There's been a near constant debate over what samus really sounds like, so they tried to do something where there's more story. to get to know the woman behind the suit. Fans for years cried they wanted something new, critics kept saying that they were beating dead horses (LoZ and Super Mario Bros. games regressing to the 8 bit platform days) so they needed to make a step forward.

was it a good step? not in the least. But its hard to design a shooter with the Wii's mechanics. Have you ever HONESTLY, seen a GOOD, or, hell, even a DECENT shooter for the wii? If you have its probably Red Steel 2. Was it a Solid Step? oh god no. Nintendo was scared they didnt want to shoo away the classic audience but they always wanted to show they could reinvent a series in a (positive) new way like they did with Super Paper Mario, or Mario's first try at 3D, or Link's first adventure into the same plane. But was it a Step? Sure, you cant deny that it was a new step. Just give it time. You're gonna make crap on your way to making gold (lets talk about the garbage LoZ or Mario gmaes that rolled out, or even the other Metroid abortions).

I'm sorry to tell you this, but you can't blame Team Ninja for Other M's story, because they didn't make it. It was written by Yoshio Sakamoto, who was one of the people responsible for the very first Metroid game.

So yes, Samus Aran was ruined by her own creator.

I've heard people say stuff like this, and in my opinion you're giving Sakamoto way to much credit. He's just a hack writer, plain and simple.

Sad thing is, because Sakamoto wrote Other M, it is canon. Meanwhile, the Metroid Prime games are the ones that may or may not be canon, as he didn't play a large part in the plot of those games.

Problem is that they fucked it up regardless. Ive seen some of the canon manga (friend showed me the thing once, the story went from death of samus' parnts to her leaving the Chozo and becoming a bounty hunter), and whil I could see her having some confidents issues, what they showd was just fucking pathtic.

You're aware of the fact that Other M was declared cannon, whereas Prime has been pointed out as non-cannon, right? If anything, the Prime series is fanfiction, as much as you may wish for that not to be true.
