I have not played an RPG to match FF10 yet... what would you suggest?

I gotta recommend Persona 4. Great story, lovable characters, a great use of turn based combat and hard as hell.

I'll also recommend either Tales of the Abyss or Tales of Vesperia. They're both action RPGs but are great games in my book.

Shadow Hearts, it's just difficult to get hold of. FFX is also my favourite next to FFVIII, so I think you'll enjoy the story of the 1st 2 SH games as they have love stories comparable to FFX and FFVIII's. Also has a pretty original combat system, go look on youtube if you're interested. If you ever see an opportunity to get either of the first 2, do not pass it up. The 3rd one is meh, but I still found it enjoyable.

D&D 3.5 (4E's fine too, but it's just not the same), Mage: The Ascension, pretty much anything in the New World of Darkness (I especially recommend the fanwork Genius: The Transgression), Rifts, D20 Future Arcana...

Or, if you absolutely insist on not playing tabletop games, Pokemon (even if it is a bit kiddy) or Jade Cocoon, the Persona series, FF2, Star Ocean...

I don't think you ever played a good RPG.

Go play Fallout and Earthbound.
This.

Lynx, I never knew you were a kindred spirit. We must spread the word.

Shoot. Your preference for turn-based combat and realistic character models excludes my first recommendation: Tales of Symphonia.

Well, in any case, if you have a Gamecube or a Wii, I recommend either of the Baten Kaitos games. The second one uses Active Time Battle instead of turn-based (like FF6 or FF7), but it's probably the best iteration of the form I've yet seen.

I loved the turn based gameplay, the non-bobblehead character models, the photo realistic clips, epic story. What, since FF10, can match that? So far FF12 is kind of boring. LOTR 3rd Age was shallow by comparison.

Your advice is appreciated.
Not much, I love FF X.

Anyway try The Last Remnant. It's good fun.

This. If you like turn based RPGs then Shadow Hearts is an excellent choice.

Any other RPG ever?

FFX was shit. The levelling system was tedious and unrewarding, the plot was a shallow copy of Grandia, the characters were all bland, when they weren't causing all of their own emotional problems by completely failing to communicate...

Ugh. I very nearly gave up on the Final Fantasy series because of FFX. I had to stop halfway to play Skies of Arcadia to wash the emo taste away.

Final fantasy tatics it is the best final fantasy game to date because of it's great story it's fun combat system and the charecters are so deep you can drown in there history.

The original Fallout, or Fallout 3? I have 3 and am just starting to get into it. I don't doubt the first 2 Fallouts are terrific, but I'm spoiled by Gen 7 production values and would like to play something that came out within the last couple of years.

I've heard good things about Golden Sun, Shadow Hearts looks good too, but I'm looking for something for Gen7

For a fan of FFX, I second any recommendations to play any Shin Megami Tensei or Persona game (if you're hardcore enough) and the Shadow Hearts series. The 2 games in the Digital Devil Saga subseries and Shadow Hearts Covenant get the highest recommendations of these- one review of SMT:DDS1 described the game in 1 sentence: "like FFX, only the characters eat each other".

Protip: Final Fantasy is not a RPG.

Get get yourself a copy of the Baldur's Gate series and Planescape: Torment. Then you'll have played some of the best RPGs on the planet. They're absolutely nothing like Final Fantasy, and trust me, that's a good thing. You'll thank me later.

If you love the whole JRPG thing and arn't into the american rpgs I would go with Tales of Vesperia, its the only JRPG I like, a story thats surprisingly understandable for a JRPG, great combat system, likeable characters, and a veeeery long story mode with tons of replayability, for american rpgs go for mass effect or fallout 3, both are spectacular!
