Seriously, im starting to think im pretty damn weird.
I havnt played much of all the very popular games
I havnt touched Portal yet I own the orange box
I havnt touched any of the Half-Life games
I havnt played Shadow Of The Colossus
I havnt played many zelda games (Oot, Majoras Mask for example)
I havnt played Oblivion past 5 minutes after the sewers
And I havnt played many other often talked about games.

You really dont need to bother.

I mean many of them are quite good, but you can have just as much fun if not more fun with games that aren't 'major'.

Largely all that determines if a game is 'major' or not is the money put behind it, its not necessarily a certificate of an awesome game.

Also speaking as someone who didn't grow up with Zelda, you will likely not GUSH over it like all the Nintendo fanboys here do when not looking through the rosy glasses of nostalgia, so despite the inevitable cries of "OMG YOU MUST PLAY IT" you will receive uh... unless you actually want to don't worry about it.

Seriously, its not THAT great, and once you play through one you basically have played through them all.

I'd say you should play Portal, Half-Life and Shadow of the Colossus. Zelda... only if you're a Nintendo fanboy, otherwise you should just listen to the soundtrack.

Oblivion wasn't that enjoyable for me, but give it a chance at least.

And if you got the cash, pick up Mass Effect 2.

Honestly there are alot of games that are more popular than people give them credit for, like Dead Space for example.

I wouldn't really recommend you go buy a certain game by the name of... Uh...
[sub]Modern Warfare2. Rent it.[/sub]

But sure, try some of the classics like Ocarina of Time and MM. They're still great today.

And Shadow of the Colossus. A truly moving experience if there ever was one.

It's up to you. The games you mentioned are singleplayer, and since the only other game on the Orange Box is Team Fortress 2, I'm guessing you just like multiplayer games.
You don't have to play the popular games. Everyone has an opinion.

And so my tireless efforts were lost...

Ah well, same here. I just sort of regretted paying full price for it, and since "haven't" and "major games" arose in the same sentence, I figured this would be a good time to strike into action.

Depends on how old you are. If you're a veteran gamer and have never played Zelda, that's a little weird, but you don't need to go buy a Nintendo console to play them. I will say this; go back and try Oblivion again. It's a still beautiful and wonderfully unique game. Fallout 3 may be newer and almost as expansive, but Oblivion is just in a league of its own.

Pre-ordered it the day I heard about it. Add coop to it and that game would be the best game ever.

I own almost all consoles post NES that arent portable.
The reason I never played OOT was because when I was younger and I actually owned those games, my big brother was playing them constantly so I never really got a chance then I just gave up =o

And as someone who didn't grow up with Zelda, you very well might GUSH over it and become like all the Zelda Fans. Good games. Very good.

I don't see why you're not up for trying one of each series. And as for Portal? It's only two hours or so...

Portal is fun, and you'll finally be in on that whole "cake" thing.

Though, that's probably not an entirely beneficial side effect.

I don't know what else to say, don't know your tastes, just assumed that you'd enjoy an fps, seeing as you own the orange box.
