I guess I shouldn't have expected this to stay on topic, but still, nobody's come up with a satisfying answer. If it's searching for validation, you think you could just do it once...

Anyway, I might as well roll with this, and say that I think people have a right to get offended and express it to the thread in question. Also, NewClassic your creepiness is amusing [http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff197/wizzi76/Sleepy_Kitten.jpg].

Can everyone please report anyone who posts kitten links so we can get them banned? Thanks.
How did I miss you saying that?

Anyway thats bad form, they won't be banned because they are not braking the rules. I find that you wish for manny of the popular escapist to be banned a little odd, its not like they are posing the pictures stright up, just links.

You're more likely to get probation in my mind and even that is unlikely.

What answer are you looking for?
Many people have their own perceptions of a perfect life for themselves.
Perfect Job, Perfect House, Perfect Car, and Perfect Partner.
The guys that talk about their perception of the Perfect Partner are doing just that. Expressing a little bit of their Perfect Perception.

I guess it's a sort of "boys club" thing... I dunno, evidently men really like to talk about their preferences in women, probably because they hope they'll get a "thats me!" somewhere out there... it's very odd but that's my hypothesis.

Personally...

I post on pretty much every thread [http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3432/3218805867_741ccccafe.jpg] on this site...what?

Okay I'm lonely...

and I like posting.

Apologies for de-railing your thread. It honestly wasn't my intention. Although the results are somewhat amusing. I'm beginning to wonder if this kitten thing is getting out of hand. I'd rather it didn't get too bad, if only because I don't like posts to become spam on the Escapist. I hold this place in too high regard for that. So, everyone in this thread, let's keep the kittens isolated. I'd rather not have to inconvenience our lovely Staff or Red Guard.

For the actual thread content, I believe that it really stems from a desire to discuss something that's relevant, a universal discussion topic, and has spawned over 20 pages of discussion [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.67984], so is easily something that can get a lot of Escapists talking.

For one, it could easily just be a point of curiosity. Frankly, I'm somewhat curious, as I order a cheeseburger, if I'm the only one who likes them with cheese and ketchup only. Although that's not good discussion thread, so I don't ask. But, it is something that has crossed my mind, for curiosity's sake.

It's also a somewhat effective mating call. Hell, I'm sure there have been many successful relationships spawning from internet meetings, so you're tipping the scale in your favor by posting what you like, and hoping someone responds in a favorable [http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a395/NewClassic/Kittens/kitten-4.jpg] manner.

Though really, I think it boils down to talking about oneself. It's a subject anyone is intimately familiar with, and can easily help the ego. So, I'd say it's a lot of things. Really depends on the individual.

Why do male Escapists like talking about what they like in a girl?
Why do people like talking about video games? Why to girls like talking about guys? Why do scientists like talking about science?

Protip: It's probably because the topic they are talking about is something they enjoy talking about. It's not some crazy notion that guys like talking about girls or girls like talking about guys. That's the way it's always been.

They're being rude in the Escapist, whose decency I feel obligated to protect, even as an act of futility. I don't know about you, but I'm kinda attached to this forum of ours.
I'm offended that you are offended.

What are you going to say now?

I've grown very fond of these forums as well, but it just seems that everyone always just seems so eager to jump at every chance to get offended. We can go on and on with analogies, but you're still on the internet, and it is much easier to tune out a topic than it would be to not pay attention to someone talking just that bit too loudly in your local Starbucks. Oh well, this won't go anywhere sadly, like most discussions on here recently.
I feel bad for pointing out the obvious, but the point of the forum is to discuss topics. I understand your point about, ignore and move on, but the topic can turn into a pretty offensive topic quick; so people like jumping onto that and having a good ol' argument. Sorry for the offtopic post, but it could answer for some of the large amount of topic pages on some of them.

This place cracks me up. By the time you get to Thread Page 2, it's always barely on topic and people are starting to get trollish. It's like a law or something.

On topic, I like talking about what I like in girls because I hope that some wonderful girl will see it, realize she fits the bill perfectly, contact me, and this will eventually lead to me finally meeting the One.

Ah, false hope - the fuel of the Internet.

Understandable Purple Rain, but there is a difference between being offended and actually discussing something. When you are offended by something, for the most part, you don't want to ever change your stance on the topic at hand. I've seen it time and time again on here. In a discussion, one actually listens to the other person's points and adds in his/her's two cents as well.

I'm off to bed now, I'm sorry I've de-railed your thread so much Larenxis, I hope we can still be friends! =P

It's clear that my being offended at your being offended has offended you. Perhaps it would be better if you weren't offended.

Oh, oh pick me! [http://img144.imageshack.us/img144/3134/kitteneu3.png]

Alright, the threads with wider audiences are the ones that are more popular, right? Pretty much everyone wants a partner, so the "Preferred Partner" threads can have some of the widest audience. Not only is it something everyones considered, its something everyone can have an opinion on, regardless of the level of experience they have with the subject in question. So everyone is going to know what they want to talk about, unlike threads about religion, politics etc. Its also a self interest thing, you can talk about yourself and receive pats on the back for good taste, find people with similar preference and then theres the "I'd hit that" element.

So, thats reasons for posting, now lets look at the types of posts.

The OP: fiendishly easy to set up:
Preferred Partner said:
Well I was discussing with a friend yesterday what we prefer in partners. He reckons outgoing busty blondes are more attractive, but my ex was an outgoing busty blonde and I got bored of her pretty quickly. Now I think cute brunettes are better, like the girl I currently like (who I'm thinking of asking out soon!!).

Anyway, what do members of the Escapist find most attractive in the opposite sex? Describe as much or as little as you like.
Now I went overboard on that, and it still took me only 3 odd minutes. Its wordy enough to get past mods, but simple enough for people to read in a hurry.

Average Man: Whats even easier than setting it up? Responding.
Notarealperson said:
I think chicks who are cute, but also have like a good a personality. I like a girl who can say something interesting or make me laugh as well as being good looking.

PS. Good luck with the brunette! ;)
Thats the average reply, short, direct, to the point but its still making a contribution to the topic.

The frequent Quote...er:
Made_up_guy_43 said:
Notarealperson said:

Yeah me too, I wouldn't want to be with a hot chick who is an airhead just cause shes hot.
Bonding, you affirm your own opinion to someone else's, maybe someone who is a more regular user. You also both look like nice guys now, and you know that, because you know that any women reading will go "Oh they're nice guys, they don't like women just for their looks," so thats a confidence boost [http://img301.imageshack.us/img301/4400/ultraelection2mx0.png] as well.

"Been there, done that,":Next there is the guy who actually has some experience. How much? It doesn't matter. All that matters is he wants validation by telling everyone about it.
Ratdh_Somuib_92 said:
Well, boobs are important, but not like massive ones. Big enough for a handful is good, if you know what I mean. Like my current girlfriend ;)
See? He can let everyone know that he is getting some from a hot chick, but he won't seem sleazy because its pretty much on topic.

After that there is a unique little fellow, who may or may not want our pity. Sometimes he just feels good about beating himself up, because its easier to deal with things that way than try and be positive.
Mr_Self_deprecation_01 said:
I'd like any girl who is interested me... sadly that narrows it down a lot :(
Once we've hit page 3, the 5th type of poster pops up.
Shy_guy_12 said:
Well the girl I like at the moment is brunette, and really funny, but I don't know how to approach her or tell her I like her. Any suggestions??
He can get away with the "how do i ask a girl out???" because he is hiding inside another thread, instead of making his own. Judging by how popular these types of threads are, he also has a good chance of getting some advice.

Then, there is the final type of poster:
Explicit_Detail_Man said:
Well I like a girl who-
*SNIP about 2000 words*
-until the words maudlin have almost completely faded. Thats what I like in a girl.
Why does he write this much? We just don't know. Perhaps he meant to write a short one but got wrapped up in it and forgot he was on the internet and not writing a journal.
Notice how its almost impossible to be wrong as well? No one can call you out and say "Hey you don't like chicks with good personality!" so what you say doesn't have to be "correct"

So now you've seen reasons for posting and exaggerated stereotypical posts, answered it for you?

Of course I could have got this entirely wrong [http://mfrost.typepad.com/photos/uncategorized/knitted_kitteh.jpg]...

Being a girl, I'll happily admit that us women do the exact same thing that you're all doing now...

...More so.
