The closest I've got to this is with Harry Potter. I may have got the first book slightly before, or perhaps exactly at the time that it began to get as ridiculously popular as it was about 6 years ago.

I saw My Chemical Romance before they got popular. It was hilarious, because there was a fishing rod auction going on next door. There were loads of confused old men in flat caps wandering around... good times.

These days most of the stuff I like is far too bizarre to become mainstream and popular, so I avoid the scenario entirely.

I used to say fail or fail boat or fail whale, and was always chastised for it being lame. Now everyone says it and i was told "Seriously dont copy them by saying fail, you cant pull it off, no one likes a copier". I basically brought failblog to our year, every funny website people go on was introduced by me and spread by the people i showed, picture is unrelated oddly specific, funny exam answers, demotivational pictures, me dammit. It just isnt fair.

Those who insult the OP dont understand his point. I dont hate failblog now because everyone watches it, my aim was to do this, i hate the hypocracy that i am copying people when i did it way before they did. Im sure the OP means this as well.

Let me be more specific. This isn't about being angry when something gets a lot of fans, its when something popularizes one of your "schticks" and you can't do it without people thinking you copied the other guy. I used to have bad posture and sit on chairs with my feet up much like L form Deathnote, though before the manga existed. Then when I discover this manga I stopped doing that because people were telling me "who do u think u are, L?" making me look like a poser. And if I say "I've been doing this since before Deathnote" I'll just look like a fool with my pants on the ground so I don't bother trying.

The key here, if you're having to change your lifestyle/likes/interests because people think you're only doing it because it's cool, is to completely ignore those people. If you sit on a chair like L because it helps your back (I can't imagine how; it is singularly the most uncomfortable looking way of sitting I've ever seen) then damn well sit like that. If someone says 'HURR YOU SIT LIKE L' say, variously 'I don't care', 'Cool story bro', 'Yes. Yes I do.', 'Go away', 'What's your point?' or 'Ok.'
If something has just become popular and people are assuming that you are part of the trend...where's the harm? Do you lose e-penis points if people think you're listening to shitty J-pop because it was on some anime or because you geniunely like it? The truth is you genuinely like it and that enjoyment isn't going to be changed by whether other people percieve you as liking it or not.

I know what you mean. I used to listen to dragon force a LOT a few years back but i stoppped because of their unsuccesful attempts at another good album. I used to listen to them in school on my ipod and my friends would make fun just because it was a band from guitar hero i would get called a follower who can't discover music properly bleh bleh bleh. Meanwhile i loved their music about a year before the release of GH3, their sudden popularity made me look like a spazz. I will admit that i did feel more elite than others at the time b/c i "discovered" them first but it's not like people give a shit.

The only complaint i have about things that get extremely popular is that they forget about their older fans. Let's talk about guitar hero for example. Everyone i know has a copy of the game, popular kids, nerdy kids, potheads, etc. After guitar hero 3 it fealt like Activision forgot all about it's older fans, every guitar hero after had a shitty or decent song selection as well as an easy setlist, most songs could be 5 star'd by veteran players.

Another example is the TV show Flight of the Conchords. Season one of this show was like a pilot, the entire season looked liked just a sample of the show that they were presenting to HBO to create a series, but by god it was GREAT!!! Soon after the show become incredibly popular (i know this because a relative of mine owns a DVD store and the show sells fairly well despite the high price) Season 2 comes out and despite them having a much higher budget the show becomes unfunny and dull witted. Some people may like it but most will agree that season 2 wasn't as good as the first.

This isn't the case for all things that go popular but it is for many. Trends can ruin something that was great or make it better, my advise to you is stick with something you like until things get bad.
