I post with my fake name because I don't get what the big deal about using a real name is if you're going to put a pony in your avatar instead of your real face. One, a lot of people pay more attention to the avatar than the account name, and two, a real face would increase realness.

Furthermore, the notion that fake names are for hiding and saying things you wouldn't say to someone's face is just silly. Yeah, trolls will make accounts to do that, but most people just don't feel like putting their name on a forum account.

My real name is actually really cool.

My fake name is not. It's Jack McEreson.

Because I'm more recognized by my fake names then my real names. Plus "Irony's Acolyte" is more interesting then my first name and most people mispronounce my last name (at least here in the US, I'd imagine those more familiar with German would do better).

Because I am the real Slim Shady.
Because I love fish sticks.

And most importantly:
Because I don't want anyone finding out where I live and doing nasty things to me or my stuff.

Force of habit. "NEVER TELL ANYONE ON THE INTERNET YOUR REAL NAME BECAUSE THEN THEY CAN FIND OUT WHERE YOU LIVE AND KIDNAP YOU" is pretty much laser-etched into the brain of any small child who intends to begin an online social life, and I guess it's still on mine.

I'm 20 freakin' years old now, though. And I plan on pursuing a career in digital media. Graphic design, animation and such. So I would actually prefer it if my real name started getting around. Might help some company notice me.

My real name is Nathan Spencer, co-creator of Comic Shorts Online. Not to be confused with the main character from Bionic Commando.

I'm not a fan of my real name, it's too damn common.

My fake name sounds much cooler and what makes you think I'm not an actually toaster?

There's no reason to use your real name. I'd be a little more afraid to post permanent opinions on controversial subjects if I had to use my real name.

That's why I hate all the stupid Facebook linking stuff to all these websites nowadays.

I don't want people to know my real name considering I don't know who might be watching.

Can't believe this hasn't been mentioned yet. This could be a very long winded response but the best way of saying it is...

Because Sony.

I guess because my real name was taken. I'm also used to using this name, since I've been using it as my name online as a major "death match" player on DotA for years before I came about this site.

Easier to remember than my real name I guess. On a mostly unrelated note: I hate counter-threads like this. Especially when they aren't funny. >:|

I use a fake name, because I wish to do my part to retain what little degree of anonymity there is left to the internet.

I wish to hear unfettered opinions voiced without the fear of "having to take responsibility for ones words." Even if it means I have to endure the slings and arrows of Idiot and Troll alike.

I yearn to not have inane prejudices applies based on that of a real name.

I defend the anonymity of the internet, knowing its a loosing battle, but I will gladly fight it, not for the desires of myself, but for the validity of open and painfully free communication devoid of social contract, political correctness, and protected feelings.

That must make it hard to type.

OT: I don't know what it is with people not liking their name I actually really like mine, my first name is fairly common (Alex) but it gives me an excuse to go by my last name which is cooler than most people regular names. As for why I use my username its just a convenient to use the same name everywhere online that way if you see a wiikipedia online (that's 4 i's a k an a a w and a Latin foot, the order is less important) it almost certainly me (or a conspiracy pretending to be me (shifty eyes)).

Because an internet alias can represent far more of a person's character than in something you were given by your parents in the sense that you get to choose what it is.

That, and acting anonymously comes with far less consequences if you do something unwise.

Also, none of my three names sound cool/exotic. So that's a big part of my reason, too.
