Being mentally challenged in that way doesn't make it right to be violent. If they don't mentally have the ability to learn rights and wrongs then tough shit for them. I think you're totally in the right here and you shouldn't feel any kind of doubt or misery.

I dont think so, from what you have said you seemd to be in the right.
You should have the right to defend yourself, no matter who the attacker is. You done the right thing I think.
Basically what this guy said.

I don't care how fucked in the head that guy is, as soon as he came at you with violence, you were well in the right for what you did. Hell, I'd side with you if you had hauled off and punched him in the face.

everything up to the push was in the right, maybe instead of pushing him you should've just put your arms up defensively, in case he changed his mind

however, i think your all in the right, from what ive heard :p

It's a good job you stopped him attacking you with that stick, he sounds like a knob.

If someone attacks you then you have every right to strike them back (and with greater force) regardless of whether they're a retard or a genius (someone's intelligence doesn't affect the force of their punches).

There is no way this guy can pull the 'mentally challanged' card on you, he started it.

You do what you must to protect yourself, even if others see it as a crime. It matters not whether he was mentally challenged. If some child was about to stab you to death in a place where you couldn't escape, I doubt you would just let him do it just because he's a child.

If he's mentally challenged to the point of physical violence, he shouldn't even be in your class.

Soounds like he deserved it. However, in my experience, people always think they're in the right when maybe they aren't. I'm sure they won't do anything, though. If it went down the way you say, then you did the right thing, I would have done the same. It could have been a pregnant woman clutching a bag of kittens and I'd still push them away if they were planning on hitting me with a plank. Sounded like that's what he wanted anyway.

Its good for kids like that to learn that they can't get away with everything. As sadly because of their problems their often allowed to do whatever they want by their parents and adults and so this carries on through their life. I'd have done the same in your situation, though I might have taken a chair to his face.

I have a question for you though, if this student is mentally handicapped, then why isn't he in a special needs class?
They are trying some new merger program at schools for those not too severely disabled, which is turning out pretty horribly for everyone.

Was I wrong?
No. And where's the moral dilemma? He "attacked" you, you defended yourself. Just because he's retarded doesn't mean he can do whatever he wants.

I would say that you didn't really do anything wrong. Maybe Ghandi could have handled it better, but not many people will shun you because you're not as good a person as him.

There is no easy answer, but yes. You accidentally hit him, and he was going to fight back, so you stopped the fight before someone got hurt, without hurting the other guy. Good for you.
Yes there is an easy answer. The OP was attacked. It doesn't matter what mental problems someone has, as soon as they initiate violence, the only appropriate response is to stop them, with whatever force necessary.

The OP did a wonderful job of restraining himself, not sure I could have done the same, but that doesn't introduce any ambiguity into the situation.
