I really do not like steam... Persuade me otherwise. FIXED

A long time ago I was playing steam after purchasing the first humble bundle. I had heard of steam and wanted to check it out and this seemed to be the best bet. I had a blast. Then my internet went out and Steam game me some BS message about 'connect to the internet to play your games". So I figured "whatever, I'll continue to play when my internet gets fixed."
Later that week I attempted to play on my steam account again (internet was fixed at this point)
The client game me some line about my internet not being compatable with the client. So I poked around and eventually gave up.

Fast forward a few years to now. I was still getting updates about humble bundles and see a Civilization bundle. Since I had planned on getting and playing these games, 16 dollars for most of them didn't seem so bad. I re-installed steam, having completely forgot about the problem. I had moved and am with a completely different provider (that's faster, as well) and was reinstalling the first humble bundle I had, along with Civ 5. Then the downloads stop. They tell me an update is required. I check, and my client is up to date. So I try restarting it. Then I get the same message. "your internet is not compatible with our client."

TL;DR
Seems my internet isn't compatible with Steam. Maybe it's just me.

EDIT: The exact error was "Steam Could Not Connect To Steam Network
This Could Be Due To A Problem With Your Internet Connection or With The Steam Network. Please visit Steampowered.com for more info."

The problem was rouge processes.

That error message doesn't make much sense. Are you sure it's exactly what it said? I'm not finding anything like it, either. If you can copy/paste it or screencap it, perhaps we can troubleshoot it more accurately.

But OT: ...why should I, or anyone, persuade you otherwise? I've personally had no issues with Steam (some slight annoyances but only slight and only annoyances that are fixed already anyway). But I don't see this as a reason to make everybody use Steam - do whatever you like.

Offline mode does work. At one point while travelling I didn't have internet and I was able to play Deus Ex: GOTY just fine.

This, plus your incredibly vague no one has heard of 'my internet is not compatible with steam' kind of make this seem like its just a made up story to wind people up.

Though if you want to look further into it (In my experience someone who comes back with an error like this when asked is either too lazy to find the error, or lacks the correct knowledge) there are certain routers and router setting which have been known to cause issues with steam, so maybe look into that.

your internet not compatible with steam?

I somehow don't think that's how the internet works.

But if you can dig up the exact error message again, that'd probably be helpful.

I have been playing on steam offline mode on my laptop for ages now. Mostly because my school's wireless blocks steam for some reason. Offline games work like a charm.

Your descriptions of the errors and messages are pretty vague. It's hard to tell, even remotely, what the issue may be. And really, this:

Seems my internet isn't compatible with Steam. Maybe it's just me.
...is almost assuredly NOT the issue.

If you can provide some more concise examples; perhaps screen caps or the like; I, and I'm sure several others, are more than willing to help you suss out the issue. It's no fun when software becomes uncooperative.

You can either quote me with the info or just PM it to me. Either way, I'll do what I can to help you.

I know this sort of thing happens a lot on this forum, especially on this topic, but let's give this guy the benefit of the doubt. If only this once.

Honestly, I'm as skeptical as Elijin. Don't get me wrong, the more people who don't love Steam as the second coming of Christ the better, but this doesn't sound right.

If you're seriously having issues, ask for support at the Steam forums. I've got a bunch of help there.

As for persuading you, there's no reason you should feel the need to like Steam or anything else.

Personal story time!
I know when I was downloading steam and all my games on my new laptop it would do a partial download(mostly because I kept queuing more games to download so it'd stop what it was doing and start the next) and then it would tell me update required next to the game that was previously being downloaded. I left my computer running so steam could download and everything hoping the thing would fix itself and lo and behold when I woke up the next day about half of them were fully downloaded and didn't say that they needed an update. But I was freaking out about it to a few of my friends whilst it was happening. However, without the actual error code/message none of us can really give you any advice on that front.

Also, there's no point in us trying to persuade you otherwise. You pretty much almost sound like you have your mind made up if it weren't for the humble bundle pack for the civ games. No amount of anyone saying anything will really persuade you otherwise. (At least in my experience of people making these threads)

Schools often block game related things because they want the students to focus on studying rather than gaming.

OT: If you don't like Steam then that's fine. Make up your own opinion on these things rather than getting people to persuade you why you should. No matter how many good reasons I can give you to love Steam those are my reasons for liking it, not yours. Give up if you don't like it, if there's an error message you could simply write it down and look it up on the Steam forum to see if there's a fix or search for it on Google. Without having the exact message none of us can actually fix your problem though.

The Thrice G (the great and glorious GabeN) is here to lead you to the promised land.
His disciples will glady work to solve your problems at the Steam Forum if you only find it in your heart to give He whom is known as Him a chance.

Yes, I'm aware I'm being silly. I'm doing it on purpose.

Well, if I keep with the thread title, when it works, it does everything for you with no fuss at all. Everything else is up to you to run/build your computer so that it can handle games. And the only distinctly anti-consumer thing they have ever done was what Jim just ranted about this week. Every other argument against Steam is based on what they could do,or hinted they might do, but not what they have done.

Also cheap games. You get enough of those, and you'll never look at console gaming again. Hell, I can't even justify a 3DS, which I know I'd use and have fun with, just because Steam has shown me how easy and cheap gaming can be. But if Steam is not for you, then we can't tell you otherwise.

... no. I don't like Steam either. So, rather than persuading you otherwise, I will instead attempt to persuade you that Good Old Games is better. :p

I've had some trouble with it insisting on updates, and I hate the online requirements.

On the other hand, I've gotten a TON of cheap games - including several recent releases - on GOG. They have frequent sales (some better handled than others, but still) and they are DRM free - you download the game once and you're done.

So I say screw Steam! And Origins (just cause EA). Join me over on GOG where the DRM is non-existent.

Oh - Pro Tip. If Steam has a game cheaper than GOG (and they both sell the game, obviously), you can buy it on Steam, and then use the Steam Code to get it free on GOG. That's what I did with the Witcher 2. ^^

Edit: Typo, corrected.

When I bought my new PC last year, in order to begin the process of getting all my games library onto the new machine - I installed Steam.

Steam did the rest of the work.

Seems pretty useful to me.

Your problem has failed multiple reality checks.

I'm not saying you made this up, only that you're using a completely different client than the rest of us, and it may or may not actually be the result of a fever dream.

Steam isn't exactly a good thing, but it is an *inevitable* thing, and given the options you may as well toss your hat in with Valve.

games not working? internet compatibility? those are nothing compared to the steam horror stories of the 2004, when unisntalling steam broke your registry to the point of needing to reinstall windows and when steam updating itself would crash and start updating again, eternally to the point of eating your whole bandwitch.

Now, i tried steam again after many years and got to say this seems to be fixed. it seems to work well, there are no "lag" problems people keep talking about but there are only two complaints i had. One is when steam servers crashed because of overload on THEIR END i was unable to start my singleplayer game because i didnt bother setting up offline mode beforehand. no matter, it only lasted a few minutes but thats still a hinderance. another one that is more annoying is that the automatic sign in into friends doesnt work. i have to do it manually every time. and im not alone with this problem and its a confirmed bug.

I dislike steam for being a DRM, but its gone a LONG way since its beginnings.

Is steam good...

compared to Origin and UPlay? yes, since they are half baked crap from people trying to scalp you to death.

Is it good compared to say nothing like it at all? no, it can be a useful service for getting hold of games at short notice, but relies on you having good internet.

Well, it's a series of tubes. Maybe the tubes aren't the right size to carry steam?
Totally. You need waterproof, insulated pipes to carry steam. Otherwise, it just leaks out or liquefies before it gets anywhere useful. Fortunately, we sell those for only $6.99/m.
