...I'm gonna snap and kill someone.

Here's what happened - I work at a local grocery store (Roth's, in Salem, Oregon if anyone cares) as a cashier. Now, as a guy that deals with people, I get my fair share of assholes, but most of our clientele is really old people, so those assholes are more along the lines of patronizing old ladies that feel the need to criticize everything you do. However, a few weeks ago, this one guy comes through my line and wants to buy a couple of 89 cent cans of mushrooms. He pays with a credit card, and the security policy for credit cards is to have the customer sign the receipt, and compare that signature to the one on their card. Well, this guy signs, but he doesn't have a signature on his card (it's worn off, which happens), and I ask to see his ID. I like to be careful when people pay with credit - my parents had their identities stolen a while back, and I know the feeling of wanting to know your money is safe. Anywho, he had been pretty nice up to this point, but all of a sudden he gets snappy, and says "I seriously don't have time for this. Just gimme my damn card back." I told him I need it for security purposes, and he just grabs his mushrooms and card and walks away. By the time I grabbed a manager, he was out of the store, and although I worried that he might have stolen the card, there was nothing else I could do. Imagine my surprise, however, when I see the same asshole come through my line tonight. I didn't recognize him at first, and he was only getting a bottle of cough syrup. Anywho, he signs, and I ask for ID again, and he says "What, are we gonna do this again?". It was then that I remembered who he was, and I said something along the lines of "I really need to see your ID". Then he says something along the lines of "Just gimme my damned groceries and my card", but more vulgar than that, and snatches the syrup and card out of my hands, and leaves. I was a little stunned, because when he was talking to me, I could sense that he wanted to come across the counter and slug me in the face. By the time my manager (we only have one after 8 or so) was in a position for me to talk to him, the guy had left again. However, I'm making damned sure I remember this guy's face, so if he has the balls to come in again, I'm gonna call every single manager I can get my hands on...

Sorry for the ridiculously long post, but I really just needed a place to vent. But, while I'm here - What do you all think I should have done? Technically, this guy broke the law - As an employee of this store, I can refuse service to anyone, and by refusing to ID himself, he also broke the law that allows me to card him. So, should I have slugged him? Taken his card? Pinned him to the ground and waited for my manager? Other? All of the above?

You did the right thing. You got the manager. It's not your duty to attack shoppers; whether they thieve or not. You should only attack in self-defense.

I mean, what would that do for the store's rep if you slugged some guy in the face? "The cashiers are violent and rude!"

Rumors spread fast, m'boy.

Two nights in a row..... Were you the only cashier in the place, you would think that you would try to avoid the dude who carded you one day so you wouldn't be carded the next.....

You're kinda overreacting.
This would piss me off too, but it's nothing that requires drastic measures.

Sometimes people are insubordinate. It's just human nature.

Yeah... I know political correctness reigns supreme in these cases, but he really did get my adrenaline going... The three people in line behind him were like, "have you seen him before?" "That guy was kinda rude, huh? (duh)", etc... Very rarely do I ever get angry or pumped up enough that I want to cause physical damage to someone or something, but this guy... I dunno. I wanna see the cops come in and drag him out screaming. Or find out that someone else stole his credit and spent thousands of dollars on jetskis or something.

While it may have resulted in you losing your job I personally would have punched the guy in the face it he had the balls to talk to me like you said he did the second time around (just because I have to attend to you as a part of my work doesn't mean people can be as much of a dick as is humanely possible).

In the interests of keeping your job I'd say that you handled it alright (you didn't snap at him or anything like that, in my experience most managers don't like psychotic staff members) although you probably could have withheld his card and goods and waited for him to comply (it's a legal requirement so he'll just have to live with it), failing that, keep them there and call the manager (let him/her deal with it).

I would shop there religiously, for one.
Max, I think we need to have a chat about the birds and the bees.

Namely how the bird eats the bee. You're the fucking bee. I'm the bird. Stay out of my store!!

Meh. My managers probably woulda been cool with my withholding his crap until the one came back inside... I was seriously afraid of getting into a fistfight, though. Wich woulda been pretty awesome, actually. 'Cause then we could press legal charges. And I'd have an awesome new story to tell people. The chicks would come flocking...

...Sorry, popular culture osmosis.
I was thinking the exact same thing going into this thread.

And since no one has mentioned it yet (I don't think), have you seen our somewhat famous The Customer is Always Wrong thread? Some very good stories in there.
