...I'm gonna snap and kill someone.
Here's what happened - I work at a local grocery store (Roth's, in Salem, Oregon if anyone cares) as a cashier. Now, as a guy that deals with people, I get my fair share of assholes, but most of our clientele is really old people, so those assholes are more along the lines of patronizing old ladies that feel the need to criticize everything you do. However, a few weeks ago, this one guy comes through my line and wants to buy a couple of 89 cent cans of mushrooms. He pays with a credit card, and the security policy for credit cards is to have the customer sign the receipt, and compare that signature to the one on their card. Well, this guy signs, but he doesn't have a signature on his card (it's worn off, which happens), and I ask to see his ID. I like to be careful when people pay with credit - my parents had their identities stolen a while back, and I know the feeling of wanting to know your money is safe. Anywho, he had been pretty nice up to this point, but all of a sudden he gets snappy, and says "I seriously don't have time for this. Just gimme my damn card back." I told him I need it for security purposes, and he just grabs his mushrooms and card and walks away. By the time I grabbed a manager, he was out of the store, and although I worried that he might have stolen the card, there was nothing else I could do. Imagine my surprise, however, when I see the same asshole come through my line tonight. I didn't recognize him at first, and he was only getting a bottle of cough syrup. Anywho, he signs, and I ask for ID again, and he says "What, are we gonna do this again?". It was then that I remembered who he was, and I said something along the lines of "I really need to see your ID". Then he says something along the lines of "Just gimme my damned groceries and my card", but more vulgar than that, and snatches the syrup and card out of my hands, and leaves. I was a little stunned, because when he was talking to me, I could sense that he wanted to come across the counter and slug me in the face. By the time my manager (we only have one after 8 or so) was in a position for me to talk to him, the guy had left again. However, I'm making damned sure I remember this guy's face, so if he has the balls to come in again, I'm gonna call every single manager I can get my hands on...
Sorry for the ridiculously long post, but I really just needed a place to vent. But, while I'm here - What do you all think I should have done? Technically, this guy broke the law - As an employee of this store, I can refuse service to anyone, and by refusing to ID himself, he also broke the law that allows me to card him. So, should I have slugged him? Taken his card? Pinned him to the ground and waited for my manager? Other? All of the above?
