I want drug users, smokers, alcoholics to explain this to me (seriously)

I don't really drink to excess, but I do partake in smoking and drug use. And I partake in them for the same reason that you might eat a fast food burger: because I enjoy it. Do you always do what you believe is the most healthy option? Of course not. Said burgers could also destroy your life by creating major health problems, but that is usually not the result. The same can be said for the majority of people who use alcohol or soft drugs. Self-control is the problem, not the substances themselves. People enjoy different things, you obviously don't enjoy smoking, drugs or alcohol but there are those of us that see their appeal (in moderation).

Never drunk, never done drugs, never smoked. Don't understand any of it. mainly because I never got 'peer pressured' into throwing my life away or trying something like that. I was offered, I replied 'No, thanks.' And they moved on.
Good for you. I never got peer pressured into throwing my life away either.

I do, however, still enjoy the occasional brew and a bit of weed every now and then.

OP: I totally understand why you believe smoking is a terrible habit with no real benefits, and I totally agree. However, getting drunk at parties really does make your ngiht that much better. Plus weed is less damaging than tobacco; and much more....interesting.

Smoking makes me look cool and stuff.

That was a serious comment disguised as a bad joke. I don't think the act of smoking itself is cool in any way.. I never got that. But dam does it work as an accesory sometimes. That said i dont smoke regularly. Just socially, it helps me get into conversation.

Same with drinking. Im very talkative, but not very conversational (if that makes sense) so it only takes half a drink for all the stuff im constantly thinking to come out. Thats me personally though, some people need to get obliterated before social lubrication is acheived, i'm not as much a fan of that.

Weed is good and on the health scale im a bit torn. Theres loads of official studies that tell me either way - that its perfectly fine, or its mentally damaging. Honestly i tend to ignore these things and base my judgements on observation. BUT my observation completely matches that... Some people seem to be mentally degraded after smoking it lightly, but others smoke fields of the stuff and seem unaffected and just as sharp as ever. I think there must be something genetic or something in the way certain people think that gives varying susceptibility to that.

Personally, i'm half jamaican.. My grandad smokes the stuff and is fine all the time, but my dad is a paranoid man that constantly warns me of the dangers of it. I think its given me a balanced view on it.

I think the lesson here is everything in moderation

because life sucks and anything that can distract from that fact, even for a short while, is totally worth it.

I can tell you all about these substances. A little background first: I am 30yrs old, married, with 3 kids. I have mellowed out a lot in my later life but in my late teens and early twenties I experimented significantly with many of these different substances.

Cigarettes - These are useless, and highly addictive. They give you no high and are just a waste of life and money. STAY AWAY FROM THESE.

Marijuana - A great way to unwind. This just mellows you out and makes you lazy and hungry. Things seem a little funnier and it really is a good way to relax. Also really soothes stomach pains and nausea.

Alcohol - Depending on your personality this can be good or bad. I am a happy non-annoying drunk so when I have been drunk I don't cause problems or act too stupid. It is a great way to work up the nerve to talk to girls (liquid courage). Hangovers can really suck.

LSD and Mushrooms - The thing about these are that they aren't as extreme as popular media likes to say they are unless you ingest a whole lot. Most of the time you will just laugh uncontrollably, your face will start to hurt from smiling so damn much, and things will be a little strange. If you stare at a spot for a long time it might start to move around or have that melting affect but you won't have a full blown hallucination or see things that aren't there unless you take a whole bunch of the stuff (10 to 15 hits of lsd). The high lasts quite a long time though 8 - 24 hrs. Sometimes people have bad trips because they can't handle the weirdness or they get paranoid but if you just remember that it will come to an end eventually you will be ok. Mushrooms can make you sick though so don't take too much or else you will feel really shitty for some time.

DMT - Oh my fucking god you will talk to aliens!!! It starts with this strange ringing or tone in your ears then progresses to a full blown hallucination. The best part about this drug though is that it only lasts an hour so you will come out of it soon and it is quite the experience. This is what i imagine being inside of a video game feels like.

Opiates - This stuff feels like heaven. You will have a great body high and feel really good. It can make some people nauseous though so be aware of that. Don't shoot heroin because that is a good way to get AIDS. And yes this shit can ruin your life. But the high does feel really good. Liquid morphine, oxy contin and, fentenol suckers make you feel like you are floating on clouds.

Cocaine - It is definitely a stimulant and gets you up and moving. You will have a numb feeling in your face that feels pretty good. Your moods intensify greatly and if you are happy you can have a really good time.

Crack - same as cocaine but the numbness is over your whole body instead of just your face.

Methamphetamine - This shit is highly addictive but it does give you a really speedy and intense high. You can stay awake for days off of this and it does make you feel pretty good. The sensation of breathing feels really good and weird when you are on this and it makes you smoke a lot. I live in Topeka, KS so this stuff is pretty common and the people who do this stuff are probably the most awful piece of shit humans you will ever meet. Every meth head will steal your shit and stab you in the back to get their next fix. It really is not worth it to get into this stuff simply because of the people you will be surrounded with.

Remember it can be fun to experiment with drugs but they can ruin your life. When you are a grown up with kids and responsibility they really aren't worth the risk. Aside from a little drinking and even less pot I don't mess with any of this stuff anymore. And the people that you associate with when you are in to drugs really suck. So beware if you are curious.

Some to avoid their problems, some just for the experience, some for fun, some didn't even have the choice.
As for it'll ruin you? We dont care. We're well aware that drinking will wreck your liver, smoking will burn out your lungs and "hardcore" drugs will destroy your brain BUT...we dont care. You only really get some of the juice out of an orange once you smash it up right?

Edited because a shorter statement is nicer.

I started to smoke, do various drugs, and drink about 7 years ago. I quit everything this year. It was fun, I learned lots, but it wasn't for me. And it isn't for everyone (including most of the people who do these things). If you don't, I wouldn't recommend trying it. A life enjoyed without the help of whatever substance is a far better life, in my opinion.

That's not to say that these things are bad, or that the people who do them are wrong. The trick is to keep in moderation, stay in control, and to be smart when it comes to being stupud. If you have these things down, then I don't see how a little experimentation could hurt. Just make sure you know what you're getting yourself into.

I have asthma so smoking on anything isn't healthy for all in the short term. Yet Drinking I can't stand the taste of alcohol, I see why there's a lot the fruit flavored drinks as of late. Some people are like me even if you mix the booze you can't get past that bitter, foul taste. I got drunk a few times before and I realized the after effect wasn't worth the short term benefits. Plus I can't stand to be around drunk people, my mother and a lot of her friends were alcoholics. It just angers me when people drink to get themselves fucked up to an unhealthy level. Getting buzzed and acting goofy is alright, sipping on liquor or wine with friends and family at dinner is fine. It's getting shitfaced, fucking shit up, then acting like you aren't responsible for your actions.

I occasionally smoke weed. I get why people do that, the high is great and It makes the world seem so much nicer and its good for stress relief.

I drink quite abit. The high from alcohol I think is better than weed. As in its much more intense. But the come down is worse. For example Hangovers. and its much more damaging to your health.

Smoking tobacco is the one I don't understand. But I don't object to people doing it.
1. It doesnt taste nice.
2. The high is so short and quite crap.
3. It makes you smell like shit.
4. It is horrible for your health.

One thing to remember...
If you think these things are dirty and you hate the thought of them.
Don't do it. No one can make you take something you don't want.

Social awkwardness, inhibition, being part of the gang, not knowing what you are doing, reckless behaviourism, "I got this", etc etc.

That's for most of the drugs. I've met plenty of stoners that just did because they genuinely enjoyed it. As an art student, 90% of my art student mates have smoked or are currently smoking weed. And know what? They are pretty cool people. Apparently it helps them "boost their creativity" and from what I've seen they see some magnificient stuff while they are trippin' balls.

I'll never try it tho, because I don't want to, but I don't really have a bad opinion about weed.

On the other hand, those people that just conmemorate weed like it was a new god and go around telling everyone everywhere they smoke weed are pretty fucking annoying. STFU seriously, I don't want to know what you do in your free time.

Having smokes a handful of cigarettes, and drank (partial glasses) alcoholic drinks, I fail to see the appeal, much like you OP.

I see no appeal to cigarettes at all. I didn't feel relaxed or any of that other stuff that supposedly comes with it. The only thing I felt was that I needed to drink a bottle of mouthwash. The few occasions I have drunk, were few and far between, with my glass not even finished, which is odd considering that I generlly go through 3-4 glasses of tea or so when I eat at a restaurant. Sure, you do get a tingly feeling when you start to get buzzed, but the taste of the alcohol, and the negative effects of too much alcohol aren't worth the temporary buzz that you get as far as I'm concerned. Sure, I'll probably still drink on special occasions, but probably not more than one, if I even make it through a whole one.

My friend though, he drinks just about every time a place serves alcohol. Now, he generally only drinks one, but it doesn't make sense to me because he says he doesn't want to become like his dad who has a drinking problem. I've told him several times that the best way to avoid that is simply not to drink, but he doesn't seem to be interested. I think he drinks mainly bcause he can though, not because he enjoys it, which confuses me almost as much as people who drink specifically to get drunk.

Well I don't ever smoke or use other drugs. But I do drink occasionally, and when I do it's with all of my friends so it's more of a social thing really. (But since summer has started for me today and I'll be a senior this year, I expect it to happen a lot more often.)

'cos it's fun.

seriously that's it. I get drunk and high because I enjoy it. Sure there are long term dangers but who wants to get old anyway?

Smoking/doing drugs is something I only really do when I'm drunk. For some reason I just enjoy the taste of a fine Romeo et Juliet 8 or my friends enjoy a bit of mary when we're drunk. Same goes for Peach/Strawberry flavoured cigarillos (less so now that filters are illegal).

As for drinking, I do it because it's fun, and the amount that I drink is harmful but the amount of times I drink isn't. I drink maybe 16 beer (in one period, but keep in mind I'm overweight and Scottish so it takes about 9 to get me buzzed) every month or two at the most.
