I want drug users, smokers, alcoholics to explain this to me (seriously)

There's no point to smoking particularly, there is to drinking and drugs. People do them because they enjoy them. I find it hard to believe that so many people are so dense that this is a great fucking mystery to them.

Why, as a teenager, get int relationships? You know it will end in a breakup, and you'll feel terrible for a while afterwards, but you still go ahead. Mainly, I believe, because humans are fundamentally irrational beings.

No one thinks in formal logic, and those who try to think through everything logically miss out on at least part of life.

There's your answer.
Although it doesn't really apply to tobacco. That addiction is usually triggered by a bad decision.

I personally like being in an altered state of mind, and I don't take anything illicit on a regular basis.

if you can have the self control to not do those things in excess (easier with some than others) then its just a fun reprieve. fun parallel: playing WOW 14 hours a day is unhealthy but playing it 16 hours a week is a hobby.

Tobacco gives you cancer and alcohol gives you cirrhosis. That, and a myriad of other things that could happen (DUI's, killing someone, bar fights, withdrawal, spending hundreds a month on cigarettes). Marijuana, on the other hand, is non-addictive and does barely anything except give you a "sore throat." You may say that it causes the same behavior as alcohol, but with marijuana, you have a body high as well. They call it "couch-lock" for a reason. When you can barely move, you probably aren't going to want to drive either.

Tobacco kills, and has no benefits. It's a stimulant, but people trick themselves into thinking it calms them down. Alcohol can be used in moderation with some common sense (As in, no, you're not "good to drive"). Marijuana is a mainly victimless crime, or it would be if it were government sanctioned and nobody got shot for trying to buy some.

Also: No doctor would ever chant about the medical benefits of alcohol or tobacco. Marijuana has a lot of doctors saying it does have them.

I've never smoked tobacco or marijuana, but of course I've had a drink or two. All I know is, marijuana is much safer than the other two.

Acid I've never tried, but hope to at some point just for the experience. That's also non-addictive and pretty victimless if you have someone who'll stay sober to watch you and make sure you don't jump off a bridge. As for coke and other hard drugs, stay the fuck away.

I sometimes get drunk with friends, but that's it. I've never taken drugs or smoked and it's damn well gonna stay that way.

I don't really drink all that much, but then again I sometimes get some sort of inclination to just get wasted. I'm a pretty laid back guy and have enough self control to not smoke and get drunk, but when you're with friends you haven;t met in a couple of years, you just get the urge.

The reason people take drugs is escape, escape from reality, boredom or their life in general. Reading books and watching movies is based on the same principle, even games. Yes, videogames are a form of escapism. So far so good. The problem begins in which drugs and behaviour are socially acceptable, like alcohol and reading books or even smoking weed in with us the Netherlands. And there are the ones that are not, like doing cocaïne and LSD and cutting youself.

As long as you dont bother other people, as far as I am concerned your own body is your domain. You want to fuck it up by eating fastfood, drink or smoke, go for it. It's your party.

Abstinence is easier than moderation.
So many people (possibly rightfully) fear the slippery slope of alcohol and drugs.
For me, and people like me i guess, we take on that slope with caution.
I enjoy experimenting with drugs (mostly hallucinogens) occasionally (maybe a teensy bit more than casual).

As far as i see it, life is here to be experienced. I'm not depressed, I'm not on any kind of spiritual journey, I just enjoy seeing life from a different angle, basically collecting different experiences.

If you do your research, and come to the conclusion that the ill effects are too high a risk, If you feel that you can't handle a drug, that it will take you over,
or if these euphoric states/different experiences just don't sound appealing to you, then maybe drugs aren't for you.

Drinking i don't do too often, i enjoy a jack n' coke every now and then, and maybe once every few months i enjoy a good binge drinking session. Its social, its fun if your in a safe place with good friends, and don't completely mess yourself up.

Smoking? As much as I say to myself that the years I'm deducting from partaking in it are worth it, seriously, I regret smoking, and is the only thing I would 100% speak out against.

Jack, you remind me of CM Punk for some reason. Anyway, I'm only 15 and live in a small(ish) town in Arkansas, so I haven't smoked or done drugs, but I have snuck a beer or four and it taste...awful. Seriously. And thats why I keep sneaking beers. I hope each time I'll sneak just enough to get drunk and see what all the buzz is about. No pun intended.
Ha! Yea, I guess my post had a Punk vibe to it, but I'm more of a John Cena fan, really. It was fun watching him kick punks ass on Monday. :p

And DAMN, I did not expect such a strong response. I go to bed, eat some breakfast, come back and suddenly I have 42 messages and 8 pages of posts to read. O_O I should probably turn quote notifications off.

Anyway, thank you all for your open and honest responses. It seems like the number one reason for pretty much every substance is social interaction. Interesting stuff. I'm more of a recluse myself, so perhaps that's why I never really felt like trying these things.

One of the best and worst experiences I've ever had was on a drug called LSA. It's a low level psychedelic so it has a lot more side effects than stronger ones. It made me absolutely nauseous and I was laying in my cousins bed for hours thinking I was going to die because the pain was so terrible and it didn't end any sign of slowing. I was talking about how I wanted to find an authority figure and beg them for help. Apparently at the end I was saying I couldn't breathe and was going to die.

But then I threw up all over the place and felt perfectly normal. I didn't feel high at all. So we started just moving on and planning other stuff to do when, 5 minutes or so later, I realized that the apple I was eating was several times the size of my head and hard as rock.

What ensued was one of the greatest feelings of my life. Everything was different; light, food, drinks. It took me an hour or so to eat that apple and the monster I had was amazing.

The come down was pretty bad, but that was only because it happened on the way back from a 3 mile each way walk at 4 or so in the morning. It was by far some of the most interesting conversations of my life. I was higher than I had ever been, while my cousin was high on weed, and my brother was totally.

I don't regret it at all. I guess that's why I do drugs. It opens up new experiences and doorways, and, even when it's bad, it's still an experience.

That being said, due to one horrible experience with alcohol I cannot drink at all. Weed is pretty fun, but I enjoy it most to stimulate dreams. When I'm awake and high it's not that amazing (and I've been really high before).

There are some drugs I wanna try, namely DPH. It makes you hallucinate the things that you fear most, and, at certain doses, you see your worst nightmare at the peak. It effects you for days and even longer. It sounds like an experience I'd enjoy, but I'm far too afraid to touch the stuff. I've had a bottle in my possession for months now.

I now realize that this isn't really on topic at all. Oops.

I smoked a bit around the end of high school and the first year of college; didn't like it particularly. I only had the odd one here and there so I never became addicted or anything. The taste, not to mention the price, didn't do anything for me. Though strangely enough I don't seem to mind the smell of them. Well, some smell like crap and I don't like the smell of stale cigarette smoke in clothes either.

The only drug I've done is Marijuana. Again, that was around the end of high school and the first year of college. I actually enjoyed that. I thought the taste was much better than nicotine. Apart from that, no. Drugs are bad, mmkay. lol

And as for drinking - that was a phase I got into and quickly got out of when I was 16. Since then I've never seen the point of getting completely wasted. It just seems pointless and a waste of money. Tipsy I'm fine with though.

Hi OP,
I've been trying to formulate a way to say this to you without coming across as a douche or looking down my nose at you and I hope thats not how I come over,
I'm coming at it from almost the opposite angle to you,I'm 39 and have been taking various recreational chems since my teens,(never got into smoking heavily because I'm a martial artist and my Sifu threatened to kick me to pieces when I was 12 when he caught me smoking..which i'm so glad for!)I've pretty much given up getting rrrreally messy on alcohol although I still have a drink, and am concentrating more on Psychoactives and Ethnogens nowadays, and man I have a good/great life, great friends,a wide enough variety of knowledge, loads of world travel and a positive outlook on life...
this isn't all predicated on taking drugs, but I FIRMLY believe that they helped me to broaden my horizons,
you kind of come across yourself as a bit old before your time man,no disrepect intended,
its a cliche, but you're only young once and believe me you may get to a stage where you look back and say "shit! why didn't I have more FUN!" let your hair down mate!.

I smoke because I like it, it makes me happy and it relaxes me. I go into my own little world for a few minutes where I can just think about things.

Drinking is fun, getting meryy is fun, it makes (almost) everyone more happy and chatty. Obviously drinking too much can tuen people in to dicks who spew everywhere and look like twats on the floor.

For me, drugs were just an experiment, just so I can say "Yah, I've done X and it was like X"
They were pretty fun though, but I don't do them now.

Weed certainly does have some side effects. The psychological effects seem to be an increased chance for some mental issues like schizophrenia or epileptic fits. Inhaling any kind of smoke = bad. Period.

So far for the theoretical issues, let's skip over to anecdotal evidence. I'm Dutch, 19, have done about a year of art school - all leading to a certain familiarity with soft drugs. I like to smoke it myself, but there's no denying that it does have side effects.

- If you're smoking on an anywhere near regular basis you'll continuously be slightly dazed - let's say you're operating at 95% mental capacity for a day or two after you've smoked at least a full joint. It stacks if you do it more often. It's not very noticeable at non-regular use, but my close friends and family can tell whether I've been blowing lately.

- The part about an increased chance to trigger flash backs and epileptic fits is not political mumbo jumbo - happily I don't have any first-hand experience, but last year a friend of mine did a forced cold turkey because he got a 3 minute flashback in the middle of the street, and after that started getting flashbacks every single time. And "flashbacks" is not referring to rosy nostalgia about the good old times here - they're pretty major mindfucks.

This by no means is a "don't do drugs kids!" speech - I'm rather heavily in favor of the legalisation of marihuana, but that does not mean you should be telling yourself it's not harmful. It very definitely is. Probably less so than alcohol, but that doesn't make it kindergarten entertainment material.

Ok. Rant over. What was the OP again? Ahh, yea, a "why the hell do you do it when you know it's stupid? =S"

I'll make up for the first part of the post, and be pretty short here. Let's divide it into four categories.

- Alcohol: I enjoy the taste of good wine, beer, or whiskey, but I don't find it funny being drunk. It's even less amusing to be the only one sober in a company of drunks.
- Tobacco: It's expensive, and quite frankly it stinks. The taste just isn't worth those downsides. Can't really say I've been thinking "oh noes, I'd get lung cancer!"
- Soft drugs: It's a social lubricant which generally leads to fewer embarrassing youtube videos afterwards. It also works rather calming, so it's a nice thing to do at the start of a holiday. Due to above-mentioned reasons never closer than a week before anything important.
- Hard drugs: I'm not a thrill-seeker, and I'm not stupid. At least not about that.

On the whole I'm pretty sure I'd rather have regrets about doing something than about not doing something.

Its expensive as hell, theres one pretty massive downside right there.
Actual weed with nothing in it isn't too bad although it does damage your lungs the same as with smoking. But most weed is cut with other stuff that fucks you up. Its not really a good idea even if there are no obvious downsides.

just because I could buy them. It was a thing with my (very few) friends that when you turned 18, you registered for the draft, registered to vote, and went out and bought cigars and porn. I preferred Backwoods, because they didn't taste like a burning carpet. I switched to cigarettes because they take less time to complete, don't overpower the palate, and cost less overall. Nicotine actually DOES have a benefit, although a short-term one: It stimulates the brain into higher performance for activity and memorization.
You actually do something dumb to get a little smarter!

I was hanging out with people who wanted to party, and so I partied with them. Alcohol is my least favorite drug these days. I'll enjoy a few beers once in a while so I can get loosened up at a bar (read: ACTUALLY TALK TO PEOPLE), but I have a body that tells me when I'm done and I listen to it. I also make sure to drink a lot of water too.

I rented a hotel room in my name and was panicking about getting busted when I found four people smoking in the bathroom. I figured if I was going to get into trouble, I might as well be 100% guilty. It didn't do anything to me that night, except everything smelled like weed for that night and the next day. I eventually tried it again and it was one of the funnest nights I've had. So I still enjoy what pot brings to the table. It helps me relax (even while I'm paranoid), gives me an appetite, makes movies more interesting, turns books into IMAX HD-3D mind-movies, gets me to exercise longer than I would sober, and man THE MUSIC AND THE FOOD!!!

I have intelligent, creative friends that have tried them and had a good time. Kind of like when someone you trust to have good taste recommends a movie to you. Magic mushrooms, hash, opium (opi-YUM!), salvia (my new favorite), X, and just a dash of acid.
Not all at once of course, but then again...*thinks about it*...yeaaaaaaah....

In my personal experience you're only addicted to anything you ALLOW YOURSELF to be addicted to. Of course I haven't done crack, meth, cocaine or heroin, but those just kind of spell bad news if you've seen any movies that involve them.
And the number of famous, rich, and/or successful people, throughout the entire course of history, is mind-shattering-ly long. I'm not saying to do drugs just because other people do, it's just that maybe sanctimonious anti-drug naysayers don't know what they're talking about. Because, well, they don't know what they're talking about.
I am a huge fan of Henry Rollins, and think he's very intelligent and funny, but simply don't agree with his view on drugs. Then again, he grew up in a place that had a lot more serious drug crime than I did.
I am also a huge fan of Bill Hicks (mentioned above), Doug Stanhope, and George Carlin. All three of these men have very thoughtful and humorous views on drugs. I'd like to see what could have happened if George Carlin had just gone back to pot instead of all the prescriptions he was given, which in combination with alcohol, had led to more health complications at the end of his life. Of course he'd had more health problems before that, but still I wonder if those pills might have cut him a bit short.
Edit:I wish I could take the time to share with everyone my stories in-depth. There's quite a few good ones when it comes to drugs. Some that will make you laugh, some that will make you think.

That said, I DO understand getting drunk. It's not dignified, it's not productive, it's really not helping anyone in any substantial way....But it's fucking FUN. Sometimes it's nice to just abandon all pretense of being an intelligent human being and act like a DUMBASS for a few hours, just for the sake of doing it. At least, if you do it right. Designated driver and all that. I also only get drunk with people I trust. Things can go downhill VERY quickly if you aren't careful about the kind of company you're keeping.

But...It's still fun as hell if you do it right. Which I learned the hard way.

PS: Never tried any illegal drugs, so I can't comment on those.
Same here. I don't understand the whole Smoking relaxes you bit, but I DO LOVE VODKA!! Oh Grey Goose and Absolut, what I'd do without ya? That being said you make an excellent point about just having fun drinking.

@OP Never been drunk, mostly because I have yet to find my limit and secondly I don't trust even my closest of friends to get drunk around.
