I'm 21 years old (just about 22 at this point), I've never once smoked or done drugs, I barely ever drink and have never been drunk. I don't want to criticize those who partake in those activities and if you come into this topic expecting to do that, please go elsewhere.

I just want to know why you chose to do it. It's widely known now that the benefits of those things are temporary but they could ruin your lives fairly easily. It just seems like there is absolutely no good reason for doing drugs, or smoking, or drinking in excess. I know some people are addicted, and that sucks because that's tough for anyone to overcome. Some I know are self-destructive; they know it's bad but they do it anyway apparently because they just don't care.

But I know I can't truly know why because I've never experienced it myself, so I want to understand. Please, if you want to, give me your honest reasons for doing what you do so I can understand where you're coming from even if I don't agree with it.
I smoke cos' it taste good, I drink to forget my problems and I sniffed glue to forget my problems, the last one I stopped doing and it made me a lot better but than you are seriously traumatized by different things you have hard managing you're mental instabilities and as a sociopath I can't trust a shrink or ohter human beings at all so I turned too the booze, I never done any real drug and I'm gonna keep it that way and I still got a comon sense so I keep my drinking and smoking on a non-adictive level.

Self destruction is not about not caring. You care a great deal, but you still want to see yourself destroyed. Imagine a person you hate, so much that it hurts, and you have all the power a man can have over that someone, who just happens to be you.
You want to see and feel him suffer.

But apart from that, most people don´t do their drugs to that excess. Most just enjoy the mild dizziness and calm from alcohol and smoking and only overdo it when they underestimate it, like drinking some new kind of alcohol for the first time.

I do think everyone should get drunk, within reasonable limits, once in their life, just to know what its about, and when to stop.

I drink mainly for one reason: It's fucking delicious. Beer, wine, bourbon . . . if you find the right one you will get a lot of enjoyment out of it. Most people stop at crappy beer and never move on from that, thinking somehow you've tasted one booze you've tasted them all. Couldn't be further from the truth. To compare crappy Budweiser pilsner to a deep, rich porter is a crime against humanity.

I drink pretty much every day. However I rarely get drunk . . . usually only at weddings and special occasions. Really, getting drunk is often an annoyance for me . . . it means I have to slow down consuming my delicious beverages. Though the initial relaxing feeling is welcome.

Smoking is just plain addictive. The nicotine and the oral fixation. I don't smoke, but if it were cheaper, smelled better, and had no health side effects I'd certainly smoke. It's fun. That's why from time to time I'll go to a hooka lounge where they have flavored tobacco that is run through a water filter that removes most of the carcinigans.

And drugs? Well they are also addictive. Well, pot is only mildly addictive, from what I can tell. There does seem to be some negative health risks associated with it, but these seem to be on the less serious end. If you want info on the negative side effects of pot, watch this video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nnNPm5cG85c

I've taken cocain on a daily basis for years at a time. Of course, it was legally prescribed to me and was called Ritalin or Aderol (yes, those are basically legalized cocain).

Obviously, things like heroin, crack, meth . . . these things can destroy you quickly, and leave you a shell of your former self and should be avoided at all costs. Those that want to apply it to ALL drugs are going to cause WAY more damage than they are preventing. If you tell kids, like I was told by a police officer from the D.A.R.E. program, that a single marijuana cigarette will cause you to lose your teeth and hair, and basically destroy your life, and you grow up and find that ISN'T the case . . . well why should I believe them when they say heroin is bad?

Luckily, never tried heroin.

Well I've gotten off topic a bit. I'll close with this though, as an explanation of why you shouldn't shy away from all of these substances. There was a man who decided to give up smoking, drinking, and women. He had a very long life, right up until the moment he killed himself.

It's fun.Plain and simple. There's also the cool guy image but that fades away as you get older until it's just a habit(talking about smoking). All of the above tho contribute to one thing:Ugly people getting laid...no I'm kidding. They make you loosen up.Drugs and alcohol wash away a lot of doubts that swim up as you want to do something.I've rarely had an opportunity to explain something epic that has happened to me while sober - most of them are being drunk.Simply because I'm used to thinking over my actions before I do them. When I'm drunk I don't do that.

These things color your life a bit. It's hard to explain but my life would've been a lot more boring if I didn't drink or smoke.

I've never understood it either.

On the other hand, in my experience, alot of people don't understand me choosing to do so, and spend an annoying amount of time trying to badger me into trying something I don't want to try.
Same here, I cannot understand why someone would want to be drunk... (if anyone wants to try to make me, please don't, the descriptions aren't going to change my mind the way you want them too :p)

My friends are much the same as me, but people from outside my group of friends are constantly trying to make me smoke things and get drunk. It is annoying to say the least...

Pre-college I felt the same way as the OP. College changes you! Here is my current experience and opinions.

Alcohol: It so much fun to drink with people. I'm not a fan of drinking alone, some are. Alcohol makes me social and want to party and wreck havok so I tend to go to clubs and drink.

Cigs: Never smoked cigs. A lot of my friends smoke or at least smoke socially. I don't mind the smoke anymore but dont really have an urge to smoke myself. I just smoke second hand these days,

Pot: The effect of pot is cool and everything, but I love the taste of it for some reason. I crave the taste of pot more than the effect of it.

Acid: I love how the world changes into something quite entertaining. I never look for the meaning of life or think about really deep stuff while on it, but usually play strange video games. BTW Kirby Epic Yarn is amazing when on acid!!! Play with a friend and avoid daylight.

Other drugs: I haven't tried more than that, but I hope to in the future for curiosity reasons. I'm not an avid drug user by any means, just a curious person. Each substance has a different effect for you to experience and I believe that in order to understand the world as a whole you at least have to understand how people alter their bodies chemistry. You dont have to use, but understand why.

Beer tastes good. That's why. A simple enough reason I hope.

I smoke and the illusionary calming effect is what I am addicted to, I don't drink or take drugs, but my vice is smoking, the way I see it is as a form of escapism to me, others who grew up in a similar dysfunctional family scenario have other vices, eating disorders, alchoholism, drug habits, even addictions to hobbies etc, I grew to enjoy rolling my own cigarettes, and smoking them slowly as I played console games or even enjoyed polite conversation. It is an actual joy to me, on the other hand I do know that I am addicted and do absolutely nothing to encourage others especially younger people to take it up, as it is just an illusion after all. I actively discourage people from taking it up and never give tobacco to people who want to "try it" I also try my hardest not to judge others who also have vice unless of course they turn to criminal behavior to support the habit.

I drink because my gaming and linguistic abilities greatly increase if I reach the brink of being drunk once I've had a few conversations I then take the plunge into alcohol induced oblivion :D

Save your stems, grind them in a mortar and pestle with a little water and strain the pulp into a mug of hot water with a little sugar. It won't get you high, but if you like the taste of weed you will find no better drink.

Something about the title of this thread rubs me the wrong way.

Dude, I've never drinken alcohol in my life, but you don't become an alcoholic the second it touches your lips. Alcoholism is a disease and a problem, and believe it or not, a lot of drinkers, even the heavy ones, are smart enough not to let it control them.

But ya, I also don't smoke or do drugs, but it all just boils down to personal choice. To each their own. People do them because they enjoy them and the enjoyment of it outweighs the consequences in their minds. They aren't bad people for doing them and they aren't stupid, they just made a choice and it's part of who they are.

because intoxication leads to FUN MAGICAL EXPERIENCES! Sometimes you do really really stupid things though... still you gain a lot of stories to tell that you wouldn't have otherwise...
and it acts as a bonding ritual between groups of likeminded people...

smoking, not so much... I don't like it, makes my lungs hurt... so I'm not gonna suggest smoking... but alcohol is fun... you should get drunk off yer arse at least once in your life to see what it's like, if you do it again is up to you, it's kinda a growing up thing, you gotta know how it is to be relatively free of inhibitions before you live your life in stark strict self control...

least that's how i see it.

It's about moderation. I drink maybe once a week, sometimes twice, and it has no negative effect. I quit weed after smoking for around two years, and after quitting, I didn't really notice any difference. Coke I've done a couple of times. Moderation is important to consider when it comes to cocaine though, it can be addictive.

Its just a way of chilling out. I don't see it as escapism, it is for some people, but not for everyone.

Right on, I shall try this. Thanks

I suppose the easy way to say it would that it feels really, really good. Because, honestly, it does. But I've always considered that to be part of the reason, at least for me. In addition, a lot more drugs are nonaddictive than people seem to want to admit. Yes, I suppose weed could be called psychologically addictive, but at least for me that manifests itself as, "That was nice, I'd like doing that again some time." I've always been able to cease smoking with little difficulty.

But then, I don't know if that's the real reason. What I think my reason is is that I simply don't do anything else. My whole life I've never really been a very goal-oriented person. I was never too concerned about school and jobs. And frankly, I would be perfectly comfortable sitting at my apartment all day and accomplishing little. To put it bluntly, I'm lazy. Extremely lazy. Maybe that will change in the future and maybe I'll come to regret my use of drugs. But as for now, I essentially have the liberty to smoke however and with whatever frequency I choose. And, seeing as I've nothing else to do, is a high frequency.

The short version is, I smoke because I enjoy, I have the free time, am lazy, and don't immediately have to live with whatever consequences my actions might entail.

I remember when I first started, it honestly wasn't much of a lifestyle change. Before, I had spent most of my time playing games and on the internet. After, I did the same things, only high. I've always been a stoner, but I've only smoked for a little while.
