Here's the thing. The biggest thing I've been vocal about is the DLC. Me2 had a pathetic amount of items in game. Almost all good weapons and armour were DLC and that's not acceptable. All the DLC just makes me think the item selection is going to be even worse then ME2. unless I'm proven wrong I will NOT buy it.
I like ME's combat and I love the setting, but the DLC is preventing me from buying it unless they prove to have more options in items without DLC.
The reason that they watered down the selection of weapons in ME 2 is because numerous players complained that, while there was a wide variety of weapons in the first game, the actual usefulness of them all was almost negligible. Most people would find one specific "brand" and wouldn't bother getting anything other than the next version of that same gun. Then, of course, you unlock the Specter weapons and everything else becomes absolute junk.
This means many people were spending their time either just selling off most of their inventory or turning it into Omnigel. So they decided to reduce the selection to a standard model for each gun type, and upgraded model for each gun type, and a super version of each gun type. Yeah there were a lot of DLC weapon packs but the standard weapons got the job done just fine.
As for ME 3, from what I've heard they're going to be doing a mix of things, because one of the things that people complained about in ME 2 was not being able to upgrade your weapons. So I think what they're going to do is have the smaller weapon selection, but make you able to install upgrades in your guns like you could in ME 1.
