I was born in England but i've lived in Glasgow for the past 8 years with my dad (who's from here)
and i've had alot of first hand experiance of racism on account of my being english, and also witnessed alot of homophobic, mysogonystic and also sectarian acts.
also the stereotype of alcohol abuse in Scotland is pretty much correct, there are literally 6 pubs, 2 churches and 4 schools all within 10 minutes of each other where i live, half of which are catholic and the others are protestant/non-denominational

anyway despite all that there are some nice people, but the majority i wouldnt trust not to smash my face in with a bottle
That's becuase you live in Glasgow. Believe it or not, the rest of the country is quite nice. We have hills and shit.
true true, i have been to other places (just made a small edit in my post) but tbh greater glasgow makes up something like 40-50% of the scottish population, so half of scotland and its people are basically glaswegian

anyway there are nice people and there are dicks just like everywhere, just alot of the niceness and dickishness is fueled by alcohol
Now, that I resent. Yes, there are a lot of drinkers. Are there more than any other country in the UK? I have real trouble believing it.
well again alot of this is attributed to glasgow and the general west of scotland, but its pretty much a fact acknowledged by the scottish government that scotland has a bigger problem with alcohol and other things like smoking

Again, Glasgow. Not Scotland. And you can't honestly expect me to believe that Glasgow is that much worse than say Manchester. Both have their idiots, drunks and football hooligans. Just because Glasgow's are in a more concentrated area, doesn't mean that we're worse.

I used to live on the Border, and it depends what part of Scotland they're from. Most are fantastic people, like everyone else.

I can kinda understand why they can be anti English though... I mean, we do steal their thunder a lot, get all of the recognition, and basically have all the luck and money on our end of the island. Scotland has some fantastic history and some incredible people are from there.

As for great Scottish people... well, I doubt you'll meet many on this thread with an opening post like that :p

I'm not from Scotland but I have family there, and consider myself a Scot. I've grown up reading on the history of the country, knowing about my clan, etc.

I've been over once, and I found most people to be very friendly. No more or less so than anywhere else I've been, really. I know there's alot of resentment towards the English, which I think is ridiculous, but I imagine it's done in humor alot of the time.

seconded, Glasgow is bad for that sort of behaviour. Their own fault for having Rangers and Celtic.

But yeah, most Scots people are really nice. Yea, we mock the English (which of the celtic countries don't?), but we quite happily mock ourselves too. Basing your opinion of us on the morons who lurk on the internet stirring shite is a really ignorant thing to do.

Anytime I've ever been to Scotland I've always found the Scots to be affable enough. Unless they're Rangers fans but they're the scum of the earth and don't count ;)
You just have to wade through the long grass of jerkiness and eventually you'll find someone whom you consider to be a "nice" Scottish person. (Don't bring up football)

*EDIT* Also go to Edinburgh. Loads of friendly people there.

considering there are more people in London than there are in the entirety of Scotland, numbers are going to be more concentrated, and therefore seem more extreme. Keep that in mind when quoting things like this. Also, the SNP have a tendency to be complete bullshitters.

Agreed, Edinburgh is excellent. Just don't mention Trams. It won't go down well.

Most of us are alright, believe it or not! It is not uniquely Scottish to be an asshole over the internet (I refer you to "The Greater Internet Fuckwad Theory - google it) and like somebody else further up said, the whole "Fuck the English" thing is mostly spouted by undeducated halfwits who haven't a clue.

Admittedly, most of us at some point have dealt out some light hearted banter to English friends or family but that is all it usually is - banter. And we can take it back with the same good humour too.

As for the bawbag who was a Nazi fanatic - good riddance if he goes to Germany I say. They tend to crack down on that sort of thing quite heavily I believe?

Anyway, point it there are arseholes everywhere who are going to give you a hard time about your gaming skills or other stuff based on race, gender and religion. Like every other place you find these types in the civilized world though, they tend to be the noisy minority. They also tend to be not worth getting worked up about.

The only thing I would add, is that judging the rest of us based on a few bad eggs - well, that's surely doing the very thing you are complaining about? And then they win - can't have that now, can we? :)

I'm Scottish but I don't think the majority of us are racist towards other parts of the UK, it's more a rivalry thing. There's not really any racism or such around my area. Saying that though I live in Edinburgh and many of the people I've met from Glasgow conformed to your description. The Celtic/Rangers rivalry makes the rest of Scotland palmface.

I'm English and can do a quality Scottish accent. I know a girl at my uni who's Scottish and she's awesome. I also know of many awesome famous Scots like Simon Neil of Biffy Clyro, Ewan McGregor (actor) and Mark Millar (comic book author) so they are out there
