I will not be purchasing Skyrim.

Huh. I expect that since you feel so strongly you'll be researching every company-behind-the-company for the products you buy so that you don't have to support bad business practices. Get ready to take forever at the grocery store and give up things you've cherished in the past!

I'll support Bethesda in every way. What they do with their lawyers is no business of mine, and if they continue to make good games, then I'll continue to buy said games. In all honesty, the only thing that could make me NOT purchase Skyrim is if it gets bad reviews.

It's a copyright issue, the copyright laws world wide are kind of a pile of shit and need major revisions, unfortunately the only changes that ever happen just add on layers of shit.

Bottom line Bethesda has to defend it's copyright, and in a real world sense most non gamers will probably confuse 'Scrolls' with 'The Elder Scrolls' by name alone, if only because they are to stupid or uninterested to care.

Majong will probably be forced to add something to the name, like a sub title, and then both companies will go on their marry way.

It's not going to stop me from enjoying wither developers work. As Notch himself said "lawyers being lawyers".

I respect your reasons for not doing so.

That said, I've already pre-ordered the fucker and I'm moist with anticipation for it. Even if it's only as good as Oblivion, I still want the designers to have my money for their accomplishments, even if it means a few ass-wagons get a cut.

Well you can always pirate it if you don't buy it... did I just say that? *checks comment* yep... I did :).
The OP already established that in order to boycott Bethesda he'll also restrain from playing already bought games (I don't get it either). Following his "reasoning", that great idea you posted is not a solution for him.
Well since I already got a warning for "condoning pirating" or whatever, I'll go along and iterate some more: it was not the idea. was just stating the obvious... something that most people here already know but avoid talking about... for more obvious reasons.

I hear about some lawsuit that doesn't affect me in any way possible.

Being as it doesn't affect me in any way possible i'll be buying Skyrim on release day and enjoying it until i've explored every square inch and completed every possible quest and then i'm going to mod the shit out of it and sink hundreds of hours into it.

The developers of the game have taken the time to make it for our enjoyment and it would be rude not to.

Even though this means I will never play Skyrim, I will no longer support Bethesda in any way.
This isn't Bethesda the game developer doing this, it's Zenimax media. As I understand it, the developers couldn't give a shit. However the legal department of Zenimax seem to think Scrolls has breached their copyright agreement.

Not supporting Bethesda is the wrong move and you're punishing yourself and the developers for something neither one of you is involved with. I think you should really re-evaluate what you're going to achieve with this and the reasoning behind it.

I find it strange that everyone in this thread is relentlessly mocking this guy over his boycott, but I could barely find a single person willing to even admit they were still buying Diablo 3 during all of its hate threads.

I mean I guess the diablo 3 controversy was over actual elements of the game itself, versus the practice of its developers, but it still seems a little imbalanced.

Selective hatred I guess xD.

Edit: On that note, does anyone else find it weird that nobody has made a boycott thread about gears of war 3 selling those 21 premium weapon skins on day one? Theres like..6 in the actual game, and 3 of those required the beta, and cheevos from gears 1 and 2. So there are really only 3 skins in the game available for unlock without doing extra stuff, and the remaining 21 require a purchase.

it doesn't bother me too much, since they are relatively cheap and I can just buy a few and be done with it, but it seems like the kind of thing people would jump all over considering its similarities to the portal 2 hat fiasco.
OK, so you missed it. Diablo 3 had restrictive DRM.
The developers of Skyrim has done nothing. The publishers are suing a company over reasons that doesn't make sense to someone who hasn't read the copyright and trademark laws in detail.
Gears of War selling skins. That doesn't affect the gameplay at all.

OT: I wont be buying Skyrim simply because I'm not interested.

Didn't Jim use this as an example why boycotts are now pathetic? *shrug*

Personally, I think it's really a sad thing to do because at the end of the day they are both fat cats who don't even give two shits about us.

I'll 'rent' it via the pirating method; if I don't like it (And I won't, it sounds stupid that they removed most of the creation) then I'll delete it.

As for that lawsuit; it's just silly. It's like the EA, Activision, Capcom strategy now.
Sorry, what creation?

(Which has been pretty rough, those fuckers put out everything.)
Everything bad, you mean?

Honestly, not buying EA crap hasn't been a problem for me. I'm not even boycotting them for moral reasons, I'm refusing to buy the poor quality products they squeeze out.

...wow I'm off topic.

On topic: Seriously, Bethesda? Fuck you.

That said, I've been lusting for the next Elder Scrolls for years, so I'm getting it. Honestly.. and I'm ashamed to admit it, I'd get it even if Todd Howard was secretly zombie Hitler in disguise.

Well, I will still be buying Skyrim. To be honest, I expect this sort of stuff from companies. Just like with Blockbuster earlier, I know that companies are going to constantly pull dick moves in order to make money. Plus, I know for a fact I'd be as dickish in these sorts of situations, to make money. I don't like it, but I'll deal with it.

Also, after listening to that Escapist podcast, it seems a reasonable lawsuit. They have to do it to protect their trademark, and if they don't protect their trademark then other people can use it in future without Bethesda having any recourse. I suppose it's up to the judge to decide whether it does infringe on copyright. I hope it doesn't, and I feel it shouldn't, but if the judge decides it does, then it's good that Bethesda pursued it. So although I like Mojang, and love Minecraft , I think that Bethesda does kind of have to do this.

If you're going to base your purchases on moral principles, you might as well get used to subsistence farming. You can't avoid stuff like this; most companies are involved in it, even if it's not widely known.

Look at it this way, Bethesda is the name of the company doing this, while Bethesda Softworks is the name of the company that actually made Skyrim. The game itself (the people who made it etc.) has nothing to do with the overly zealous corporate branch causing these court problems past some copyright definitions. Do you think you're going to see Tod Howard in that court room being a dick? Well you won't. If you want to punish yourself by not buying Skyrim over some moral conviction, fine, but know that it accomplishes absolutely nothing on any scale other than you missing out.
Bethesda is also the name of the company who will get money if you buy Skyrim. How is "it's not the dev team, it's the legal team" even a defense. Talk about apologists.
Yeah, but how is not buying a game, when you were really looking forward to it and liked the last few games from them, just to make a point that will have no financial impact on the offending company whatsoever, accomplishing ANYTHING?? Talk about futile and empty gestures.
