Have you considered sending Bethesda a letter? I respect your reasons for choosing to exercise your right as a consumer not to purchase Skyrim, but it might be best to let Bethesda know just how displeased you are if you feel that strongly about it.

You are going to play game, designed by the developer team, not Bethesda's directors. And developers are usually those people, who care not for any "lawsuits". So your attempt to boycott Skyrim will be much more painful for you then loss of 60 bucks for Bethesda, who's afraid to lose much more due to tag similarity (and it actually IS a problem for marketing).

On another hand, if you really want to do this boycott, you have to find ALL Bethesda games you own, uninstall them, burn their discs and never event think of re-installing.
This - why is it that you are going to punish the game developers who kill themselves to deliver a quality product for an action carried out by a completely different group of people who just happen to work for the same company? Particularly when, as you openly acknowledged, these developers consistently churn out quality products which you have thoroughly enjoyed over the years. I fail to see how this makes sense, particularly when Bethesda is relatively justified in their copyright claim.

I honestly don't believe you are that much of n Elder Scrolls fan if you refuse to buy the game for such a stupid reason (in my opinion).

Hey man cool your jets a bit, eh? Those lawyers belong to Bethesda Softworks, not Bethesda Game Studios. They may as well be two different companies. They're just owned by the same parent, Zenimax. It's just lawyer stuff. Todd Howard and Notch are actually pretty good friends and huge fans of each other's work. Sorry to hear that in a fit of rage, you deleted all your saves. At least now you get the chance to play through those games again :) you'll cave. They always do. I would. So I know you would. Have fun with Skyrim! :D

You need to read up on the facts:
- the ones pulling the lawsuit are actually ZeniMax, publishers and owners of all Bethesda IP's
- US trademark law forces them to protect / sue anyone who goes near their names otherwise they can loose them, yes you haveto be a dick by law
- every company has been doing it since the dawn of time

This lawsuit has nothing to do with Skyrim developers it's just businessmen doing their business prick job.

I find it strange that everyone in this thread is relentlessly mocking this guy over his boycott, but I could barely find a single person willing to even admit they were still buying Diablo 3 during all of its hate threads.

I mean I guess the diablo 3 controversy was over actual elements of the game itself, versus the practice of its developers, but it still seems a little imbalanced.

Selective hatred I guess xD.

Edit: On that note, does anyone else find it weird that nobody has made a boycott thread about gears of war 3 selling those 21 premium weapon skins on day one? Theres like..6 in the actual game, and 3 of those required the beta, and cheevos from gears 1 and 2. So there are really only 3 skins in the game available for unlock without doing extra stuff, and the remaining 21 require a purchase.

it doesn't bother me too much, since they are relatively cheap and I can just buy a few and be done with it, but it seems like the kind of thing people would jump all over considering its similarities to the portal 2 hat fiasco.

I want to start out by saying i am a huge huge fan of the Elder Scrolls series, and a huge huge fan of Bethesda in general.

Between Fallout 3, Morrowind and Oblivion, I have lost somewhere in the vicinity of 400+ hours of my life.

I am fan. I am huge fan.

And I will not be purchasing Skyrim.

I want to make it clear, I have been lusting for Skyrim since it was announced. All press I have seen looks magnificent. Everything I have heard sounds incredible. It looks like another brilliant Bethesda game that I will subsequently lose a massive portion of my life and time to.

And I will not be purchasing it.

Because of this:

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/7.315129-Mojang-and-Bethesda-Are-Going-to-Court

I will not support a company that attempts to use lawsuits as a means of flagrant bullying and outright douchbaggery in order to crush perceived competition.

If Bethesda goes through with this utter horseshit of a frivolous lawsuit, I will no longer support Bethesda.

Even though this means I will never play Skyrim, I will no longer support Bethesda in any way.

I will not purchase their products. I will not play products of theirs that I already own.

I have already sacrificed 400+ hours of work on Morrowind, Oblivion and Fallout 3, deleting the games from my hard drive and removing all saves.

Bethesda will make a hundred bajillion dollars off of Skyrim.

Not a single penny of it will be from me.

Team Mojang.
You are already suffering by refusing to buy Skyrim but you don't have to stop playing the other games you already paid for. Just sayin.

Good for you, trademarking a word is a slippery slope that if taken to extreme would butcher the English language. No longer could words be used freely as everyone would be afraid of stepping on a trademarked word.

Very commendable and all, but if you're going to boycott companies with nasty practices be prepared to lose a whole lot more than a couple of Bethesda games.
When EA decided that the best way to compete against the NFL 2kX series - which was beating the shit out of now-with-updated-roster-Madden by being both cheaper and better - was by buying an exclusive contract with the NFL, in essence forcing their competition into a grave, I stopped purchasing EA games as well.

(Which has been pretty rough, those fuckers put out everything.)
That's not really fair seeing as how it was the NFL that offered exclusive rights. EA had the most money to bid and, quite frankly, would have been stupid not to buy them. I'm not supporting the idea of one company having exclusive rights like that, and I do think it has meant a decline in game quality (which review scores pretty much attest to), but it's not fair to blame EA in this situation. They are a business after all.

Why should I care?

I'm seeing a lot of this returning to these forums. Where's the discussion? What can we talk about, why, in short, should I care?

These forums aren't anyone's personal soapbox (except Jimquisition and Movie Bob, because they're allowed to troll us) they are a forum, a gathering place of great social significance, and often the scene of diverse activities, including political discussions and debates, rendezvous, meetings.

Where's the discussion? Where's the debate?

If you are willing to drop one of the most anticipated games only because of a silly dispute against Mojang.

Then you should look into other gaming websites like Gamefaqs.

You will feel right at home there.

Also, Zenimax is home to the most retarded people in the industry, they even give Activision a run for their money. Bethesda's development team themselves have no say in the dispute.

You can always buy it used... which will make Bethesda receive exactly $ 0,00.
Of course, one would argue that you are not supporting a greedy corporation by supporting another greedy corporation... but that is an entirely different can of worms.

Oooh, so now we've got Team Mojang vs Team Bethesda? Are there t-shirts to accompany this mind-set?
Then I'm throwing my lot in with Team Bioware.

Umm... their lawyers sued, not Todd Howard or any of his team. The Zenimax lawyers did.

Or maybe you're just looking to ease your mind for pirating it. That's probably the case.

So the moral that we can draw out of this is that if you're going to attempt to keep your trademark by US law, choose a lower profile victim.

Did all of you miss the part when Notch came out and asked people NOT to boycott
Bethesda? He realizes that this is just lawyers being lawyers, and doesn't want the
hardworking devs screwed over on his account.

From Tumblr:
"First of all, I love Bethesda. I assume this nonsense is partly just their lawyers being lawyers, and a result of trademark law being the way it is."

And also, Bethesda has to realise that they don't own the word scroll, and who the hell
refers to The Elder Scrolls as Scrolls anyway? I always hear it being called by the games
subtitle, like Skyrim, or Morrowind.

Edit: Also, Todd Howard owns The Elder Scrolls IP, and he's on the board of directors.
Just in case you think he's blameless.
