I've actually thought quite a bit about this for many months now. I'd tell you all about it, but then I'd have to kill you. :D
Either you've spent absolutely no time thinking about this and made a bad joke (seriously, why would you even post that on a thread like this), or you have in fact thought about this and bemusingly think that your thoughts on the subject are worth some form of protection. I'd bet on the first, and while I'm betting I'd lay money that absolutely no one on this forum will ever work on an actual Zelda title.

As for changing up the Zelda formula. No. Not going to happen, nor should it,I don't know where this "hanging on by a thread" nonsense is coming from, Zelda is a staple franchise of nintendo whose formula has always been the same. Messing around with it would inevitably dilute the game mechanics that the plethora of fans has always responded to, it would also serve to alienate that huge fan base.

Mess around with Zelda and you get things like the CDi version or Zelda II... alright if you like platformers Zelda II was decent, but it was no Link to the Past (best Zelda game ever in my opinion)

needs to have a dark (but not emo) and epic story line. also if it's on the wii then they need to make full use of the controller and the new wii plus attachment coming out. to bad these great ideas that your all coming up with (my ideas would just make a shitty gramer game) aren't actually going to nintendo. because if they were it would make the best zelda game ever and ocarina of time is considered the best game ever so a game that would top it would be the best game ever.

How I'd make it (never gonna really happen)

Hyrule has been prosperous over a thousand or more years of relative peace. Basically no massive cataclysms. But its also corrupt and bureaucratic, magic has faded away and the other races retreated deep into their kingdoms. Wars have been fought against rebellion, pretenders to the throne and other nations of hylans/humans.

Link is a cynical thirty something guardsman-lieutenant, a minor officer who has gained his rank through merit in the field of battle, but hasn't advanced far due to a lack of political or family ties. He looks the same just grizzled and older, short cropped hair and beard, scar running down one side of his face across his eye. Hes an expert swordsman but with a brawling no rules attitude. He wears a guardsman's uniform of green with armour.

Zelda is a idealistic young princess who wants to change the world.

Suddenly the sky darkens and some cataclysmic event happens, coinciding with Gannondorf's, a rebel leader, attack on the palace and Link is part of the escort to get Zelda to safety. He would be the only one to escape alive with Zelda.

Now Zelda remembering fanciful stories of the ancient hero, the gods and the other races, decides to unite Hyrule and find a magical solution. Link is not impressed, but he is ordered to follow her and obey her every command, so he does, making sarcastic comments frequently (oh yeah he can speak). Unlike other Zeldas, you would spend a lot of time with the princess.

You would escort, protect her and do missions for her. As a gameplay mechanic she'd be a companion would heal you and eventually fight alongside you with magic.

Now the enemies would be both magical and monstrous, but also include humans brigands and desperate refugees.

Magic and other mystical stuff would be present but with an emphasis on how amazing its reappearance is, rather then being a common happenstance. As the game progressed thing would become more and more unbelievable to the characters.

Overtime Zelda would learn how much her people were suffering before the event. Link would find something to believe, eventually taking up the master sword and saving the day (way near the end). The two would also fall in love, not this first sight love from affair stuff, as initially they would hate each other, hes a crass violent commoner, shes a stuck up princess etc.

Overall still being a fantasy tale, but one of hope, love and redemption.

That sounds like an ok idea for a game, but why zelda? It would be just the same if you replaced the setting with something new, and a new main hero. I agree with burying the mascots, Nintendo got it's money worth and more from them, it's time to move on.

My problem with this idea is more a (commonly voiced) problem with Nintendo's first-party titles; rather than developing original IP, they keep recycling their stock lineup of characters into a dizzying array of (largely spectacular) games. I mean, Twilight Princess, Prime 3, and Mario Galaxy were all great games, but for the most part, we've seen those characters a million times before.

Nintendo is on the same Joseph Campbell "Hero With a Thousand Faces" kick that ruined George Lucas' output after The Empire Strikes Back. The only difference is that they keep telling variations on the same myth that are worth hearing.

I think it would be the sense of novelty/nostalgia of the old games coupled with a feeling of "oh this has gone horribly wrong (not the game but the society/nation)"

Perhaps because I grew up with Links as a gaming hero, I deep down want him and his world to mature with me.

I also think a lot of gameplay characteristics of the old titles were due to system requirements rather then essential zelda stuff, eg Like Link talking.

Throw Link, Sonic, Mario, and all the old gen mascots into a casket nail it shut and bury them alive so something interesting could come out of the gaming world...now that's an idea...
Keep Samus, though, she's earned her keep through Metroid Prime.

I thought that Legend of Zelda would be awesome with more RPG elements. Instead of the same old items, Link should find items in chest and places, and dungeons like in games like Fate. And there could be leveling and skill trees, if you wanted a magic using Link, then so be it, and it should be less linear, I know it already is but you're still led along the story pretty rigidly. I know it's probably not original, but if you guys will add to this idea, maybe it will grow and eventually become reality, or you can verbally assault me, your choice.
NO!

NO NO NO. JUST NO!

What is most hated about Legend Of Zelda is that every year is the same old crap story, why would anybody take a look at that crap and say "well hey lets take this to the RPG genre". Lets for a second ignore what a RPG style could bring to Legend Of Zelda and say what could Legend Of Zelda bring to RPGs...

Ready for it?

Nothing~! Seeing a familiar face running across my screen as I play an RPG will make it no more fun than any other RPG, it would be just as fun with nameless characters in a nameless location. One of the primary things of RPGs is that they are largely story driven and allow you to place yourself or a character of your creation into the game, the terrible story and other restrictions that Legend Of Zelda would impose on the RPG genre would automatically exclude it from ever becoming an RPG.

I am a Legend Of Zelda fanboi, big time. But this is a game that I play for the hack and slash combat and puzzle-solving adventure gameplay, I buy Zelda games because they represent quality and have a long history of good games in this field. I sincerely doubt that there is anybody out there who buys the games because of the characters, story and setting, the only reason these things are retained is because they are synonymous with a certain quality of hack and slash adventure gameplay. In an RPG world these characters mean nothing.

Bravo, I salute you on the plot. It's by no means a masterpiece but perhaps better than what we are used to from legend Of Zelda, much more mature. But why does this have to be an RPG why can't it just Legend Of Zelda matured?

I've had the Idea that they should ditch link and get a new hero of time. my Idea involved link being reincarnated as twins, they could split the mastersword in two because there are two heroes now and with two people you could have a lot of fun puzzles that involved splitting the pair and doing two things independently that affected a larger puzzle.
Legend of Zelda:Four Swords...Its been done.

Out of refusal to pay for a Gameboy Advance I never got to play 4 swords. Was it any good?

BTW did my link sound like a blonde Marcus Fenix?

Edit. When I speak of a mature Link, I mean he has the wisdom gained from a life lived, rather then him calling someone a Goron-kissing son of a Zora.

Is it actually possible to make zelda new and "fresh" Wouldn't you just be making it a novelty item. Which is far from fresh and original, as they have done novelty to death.

OK, yeah, I messed up so badly with this idea, are you up for forming an angry mob and burning nintendo into an enchanted dust we will mix with the powdered bones of the stillborn WHILST MUTTERING DARK INCANTATIONS. THEN AS THE MOON REACHES IT'S ZENITH, WE WILL BE DRAGGED THROUGH A DARK HOLE IN THE EARTH, THROUGH A THOUSAND DIFFERENT HELLS. OUR TORTURED SOULS WILL SEEK OUT THOSE OF NINTENDO EMPLOYEES, AND SEAR THEM WITH DARK MAGICS WHILE OUR CLAWS MUTILATE THEIR VERY THOUGHTS. BONDED BY BLOOD, WE FORM THE DEEP GHOUL, AND AS THE EMPLOYEES' SOULS CATCH A SLIGHT GLIMPSE OF OUR TRUE FORM, THEIR MOUTHS OPEN IN A SILENT SCREAM, BEFORE WE INFLICT UPON THEM ETERNAL IMPRISONMENT TRAPPED DROWNING IN A LAKE OF MAGMA, WITH CROWS GNAWING ON THEIR LEGS.

Or maybe I'm overreacting.
