Just today, Valve has announced that they've changed the random drop system.
Previously, we rolled randomly at intervals to see if you got an item drop. Now we roll to determine when your next item drop will occur. So you're guaranteed to find items at fairly regular intervals. The bulk of drop complaints we've received in the past have been from players having unlucky streaks, where they didn't find any items for weeks. That won't be possible now.

We've significantly increased the rate at which item drops occur, compared to the previous average interval.

There's now a maximum amount of playtime per week in which you get item drops. Playing beyond that amount won't find any more items. The amount varies, but if you play an hour or so a day you're good. Some of your unused time will rollover to the following week, so if you're an intermittent player you'll also be fine.

What are the net effects of these changes? Here's the quick summary:

If you're an idler, you're going to find fewer items than you were prior to this change. Sorry. On the bright side, there's less reason to idle, because it won't earn more than players who are playing regularly.

Everyone else will find items more frequently, and with greater regularity.

TL;DR: The random drops are more frequent, rolls now determine when you will get a drop rather than a roll at a random interval , and you can only get so many drops per week. Idling is therefore pointless now.

Not sure of the discussion, but just letting you all know.

Should be a good thing. Hopefully it'll cut out on idling servers and make me get some more actual hats.

*Sigh* I still only have two hats (Not counting Bill's Beret). And one I got from smelting!

Damn it all.

I know what you mean only "drop" hats I've got is the heavy's Football helmet and the camera beard. Going to have to start playing again and try for my pyro's brain slug.

Never idled, the drops didn't mean that much to me. Doesn't mean I'm not attempting to craft a hat though, just didn't want to idle.

What platform? cause Xbox doesnt have the items, and if it was PC either you wernt paying attention or are simply blind

OT: This is good news, never idled, didnt really care for the items, tho i did want that one heavy hat

Hah, people really get into hats in this game, don't they? When I found a hat for the medic, I other people in that match were actually jealous of me, to the point of "I'm not going to talk to you anymore" (jokingly, of course).

Do people really take them this seriously?

Hat hunters are basically Achievement whores.

So that's a pretty big YES.

From what I understand, yes. When Valve first released the unique Halo hat for those who didn't cheat their way into getting hats and items, there were people who refused to help those who weren't wearing a halo. Didn't matter that there were those who didn't want to wear the halo they received, everyone who didn't have a halo on view were snubbed.

Lovely, eh?
