Maybe....just maybe....
both series will simply co-exist and continue to make sequals regardless of how much more money one makes over the other.

How about we stop trying to "de-throne" other games and focus on actually crafting an enjoyable experience?

I'm more of the persuasion it will drive itself into the ground. With the plethora of similar games out every year, that whole section of the gaming market is starting to feel real bland. I'm sure whatever charm it had would be washed away by the fact that it is yet another shooter.

But then again, humans are habitual and en masse largely unintelligent. And World of Warcraft has shown us that you can't topple a giant by offering the same product.

Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim?
Seriously I can't think of anything, Call Of Duty has become more popular than Jesus H. Christ himself.

CoD is the best at being what it is. Battlefield is a completely different game, despite the fact that both are set in the modern world and have guns.

The ravages of time will do just as well.

10 years from now we will laugh at how awesome people thought Call of Duty was, because or evolved future selves will look at CoD sort of like what we look at Duke nukem as today.

We can't wait for a game to dethrone CoD. We just have to stop playing it. I do not get the obsession with shooters. I use to be able to play Halo Reach, but now even that has run its course. FPSs are too constrictive when it comes to how to develop them. Thus, so many turn out so simular that it makes it impossible for some people to play them for very long.

honestly, i think that you are looking at this all wrong, call of duty isn't a beast. call of duty is a product made for people to have fun and enjoy at there own free will. By the same token, the Call of Duty franchise does need to either go in a new direction or simply stop and have Infinity Ward and Treyarch pursue a different project. I personally would love to see a futuristic Call of Duty, and so would many other people, but what i'm getting at is, if you don't like the game or certain aspects just aren't for you, don't buy it. Get a game that you really enjoy like, in your case Battlefield 3.

Call of Duty is the big fish of the FPS gaming world. You can tell everyone just to enjoy what they are doing but some will still go for the one that has so far gotten away.

Off Topic: Yes, captcha, How ornali indeed.

There won't be a definitive game that "takes it out" I believe that as people start getting bored of it they will look for alternatives and that its player base will slowly be chipped at....starting with Battlefield 3, which looks like its shaping up to be one of the best games coming out this year.

I'd prefer stop hyping, overexposing, and forming rivalries/fandoms around games before they're even released; let the game succeed or fail on its own merits; and above all else, buying shitty titles on name recognition alone.

As everyone else has pointed out probably Activision themselves. Assuming they haven't 'earned their lesson from Guitar Hero. They've already taken the dedicated servers away again]/b], so they've pretty much conceited the PC market to EA.

Probably this.
