honestly, i think that you are looking at this all wrong, call of duty isn't a beast. call of duty is a product made for people to have fun and enjoy at there own free will. By the same token, the Call of Duty franchise does need to either go in a new direction or simply stop and have Infinity Ward and Treyarch pursue a different project. I personally would love to see a futuristic Call of Duty, and so would many other people, but what i'm getting at is, if you don't like the game or certain aspects just aren't for you, don't buy it. Get a game that you really enjoy like, in your case Battlefield 3.
I vaguely remember hearing something about Sledge Hammer games working on a COD in the future, probably just a rumor. Still instead of zombies make a game mode similar but with aliens and crazy ass guns!

you're probably right, activision is the gamnig industry king for milking a series for all it's worth (if you don't count the madden games). But what i was trying to say wasn't that you said that CoD is a beast or that you hate it, rather that if you want CoD to stop being the top dog, don't worry about it. if Cod isn't what you want to play, buy a different game, it's not about what is popular with other people or even about what the developer is doing with the franchise (in Cod's case, whoring it out to and John or Jane Doe of the street because they can) it's about what You want. You are the consumer, you have the power to change the gaming industry, thats what is great about the gaming medium, the community gets a pretty fair say in it's development, except for a few rare cases where the game designers just have an extremely stupid idea, but that turns out to be a core game mechanic, but i digress. CoD is a big name because it sells, you're right, bit all you need to do is stop playing them and CoD will most likely fall to another ultra popular franchise, such is the cycle of gaming in today's market.

How about we stop trying to "de-throne" other games and focus on actually crafting an enjoyable experience?
Fool! If we stop trying to actually make a good game instead of firing up the fanboys and haters, how will we make a profit!? /sarcasm

Wise words indeed, even if they fall on deaf ears.

OT: One game will never take another down, we should really stop trying to turn a game, or make a game into the *insert-name-here* killer. How long have we been trying now and how successful has it been? The only time it ever happenes is when a game ROYALLY screws up and pisses off it's fanbase.

This. It doesn't matter whether or not a game sells more copies as long as it's fun to play.

Nothing.

When a game gets to this status, it isn't so much a matter of being taken down as it is just waiting for it to lose it's appeal. I've got a feeling Modern Warfare 3 will be the last biggie.

Or so help me God. It really is time to just move on.

The only things that I can think of that would take the Call of Duty franchise down are not so much other games, but Activision's own meddling.

Firstly, Bobby Kotick's stewardship of the franchise will be the major contributing factor in running CoD into the ground. Overpricing the DLC to almost extortionate prices and releasing it every few months in the tiniest slivers doesn't win you a loyal fanbase. But is sure does chip away at it slowly.

This could have been remedied by making the DLC packs WORTH 1200 MSP. Ten multiplayer maps is worth 1200 MSP in my opinion. After all, you can buy a whole XBLA game for that kind of money. (Such as the sublime Beyond Good and Evil.) It's about time CoD started to offer the same kind of value.

Secondly, CoD games in general are coming out a little bit too often - as the old saying goes, familiarity breeds contempt. I say let the franchise breath a little, delay it another year to make a decent single player campaign.

If EA stuck to it's guns and continued to craft good games - they will eventually chip away at CoD's stranglehold on the games charts. CoD is doing a mighty fine job of lynching itself, it doesn't need any help from EA.

the only way i see it happening is if
a) if COD does something really stupid for example charge people money for guns and maps in multiplayer

b)COD team gets hit by a nuclear strike(ironic)

c)some genius comes in and makes a game infinity better E.g Bulletstorm mixed with Red Faction Armageddon with multiplayer like Battlefield 2. witch in my opinion is perfect fun

Any of them. Popularity fluctuates.

Call of Duty wasn't the best-selling series ten years ago, you know. It probably won't be ten years from now.

CoD is the best at being what it is. Battlefield is a completely different game, despite the fact that both are set in the modern world and have guns.
Agreed. I personally don't like CoD's gameplay and LOVE Battlefield's. Couldn't care less really if people would rather play CoD. Means they're not cluttering up my ears with their shrill childish voices or macho annoying self-praise.

dont worry cod will end up taking itself down within the next few games.
What I was going to post up. :p

It will end up killing itself, it has been doing so already but I think the next few games might just show the rotten core being eaten by the Activition worm. Besides, I doubt Battlefield 3 will be a flop, with all the hype I think lots of people might convert from Call of Duty, I know I'm going to. I just need a PC that can hand it lol.

I don't know if it will really take down CoD. I think the best thing that DICE and EA can hope for is having BF3 producing record sales for BF and for MW3 to fail to surpass BLOPS in sales.

You just don't dethrone a Multiplayer king after one big hit release. MW1 was fighting tooth and nail with Halo 3 for the number 1 spot on XBL for a long time. It wasn't until MW2 CoD fully surpassed Halo as the go to console shooter.

If BF3 can produce MW1 level of success and MW3 fails to surpass its predecessors than you may start to see a gradual replacement of CoD.

But who knows? Regardless of how great BF3 may be; MW3 and the CoD series may continue to have success, though maybe not record breaking success, and just continue to sell consistantly because it is accessible and easy to play and enjoy yourself.

If Bf3 doesn't "dethrone" CoD than I imagine that the CoD series will probably just wind down on its own and another game will be waiting to fill the void.

Oh, gamers. Wait, let me back up a sec.

Oh, nerds. No, that's not quite right.

Oh, virgins. What happened to you? Why does any game need to take down "COD?" BTW (that's "by the way," a turn of phrase in extremely wide use amongst Westerners of all tastes), I henceforth will never call it "COD" again, since cod is a fish subbed for Grouper and other fish when a seafood restaurant wants to rip off their customers, and I could give a shit about elitist nerd acronyms. Why is this so important?

And what does it even mean? "Take down," how? By out-mediocre-ing it? Having a shorter campaign? More thoroughly homogenizing the long-since-stale genre?

Say what you want about Nintendo fanboys (*drool* Skyward Sword), we don't ask questions like "If Sonic Generations fails to be the 12th 3D Sonic Game to suck, will it beat Super Mario Galaxy 2?"

I think it'll take down itself. Considering the fact that they're just yearly re-sells of the same game now, the sales will start going down anyway. I hope.

The good ones... Ordinarily i would have an "I kid really." inserted here, but in this case I don't. Call of Duty should go back to it's duty, which was make some damn fine WWII games.

Haters gonna hate v there.
