Well, Battlefield 3 won't "de-throne" CoD because they're two completely different games. CoD is a one-man army game filled with children who don't know how to get along. Battlefield is a team based strategic game with vehicles that can change how the battle is fought.

No game will.

If CoD is ever going to end, it is going to kill itself off. Already 25% of the community that is going to get the game hates it, as opposed to everyone loving it before it's out which it was like for the past three titles.

If there is a new CoD after Modern Warfare 3, the series is going to completely flop. Unfortunately Activision has no real business ethics, so they will run it into the ground.

No one will care about Battlefield a few months after it comes out. People are going to be moving on here pretty soon.

I enjoy playing with my friends, like most people. If you buy a game for the multiplayer but go lone wolf into matchmaking you're making a big mistake. That's why people who spend a big portion of the gaming online tend to buy what their friends buy. And unfortuantly it's a very safe bet that most of your friends will buy COD.

Right now it's going to take them making multiple huge fails before the numbers even begin to decline.

So despite the fact that battlefield will be a better game than modern warfare 3. Modern warfare 3 is going to outsell battlefield because of it's title. It's a shame but it's the truth.

Not everyone is an educated gamer on the escapist. Tons of people buy games because of their titles or their friend has it. Never even looking at one review. Hell, moviebob has reminded us the case with the expendables countless times. I wouldn't be suprised to see a similar story in gaming.

I told myself I wasn't going to buy black ops. But I did because I got bored of playing by myself. I already don't want to buy modern warfare 3 lets hope people decide to pull their heads out of their asses before buying a game.

I agree, CoD will likely end itself because people will likely become tired of the gameplay. I, for one, certainly am tired of the uninnovative gameplay.

Heres my official prediction for this outcome :

1. CoD will sell more, and still be super popular for some reason. Gamers will continue hating on it and it wont go away for a very long time.
2. BF3 will sell less but still do very well. Hopefully it gets a longer shelf life too, meaning more loyal fans ready to snap up the DLC and sequels.

Maybe Halo 4 will suprise us all but I wouldnt count on it. Different developers working on a title we all hoped would die with dignity.

Battlefield 3 is off to a bad start to "dethrone" CoD by having the obligatory single player campaign, when a Battlefield does not need this since its fame was built on the back on 3 or 4 very strong multiplayer only games (excluding bot matches), if they had banked entirely on updating the BF 1942 (or BF2) experience to 2011 I'd be feeling much more confident about this game. Now I can't help but get the sinking feeling that the single player campaign exists at the expense of the multiplayer.

Edit: And I do wonder, how do you bring "innovative gameplay" to an FPS that's supposed to have some root in reality if it's so important to some of you, you can't reintroduce rocket jumping here.

just wondering what games coming out in the future could take down COD in you pinion if battelfield 3 fails to do so.

'#When# battlefield 3 fails to take down cod' you mean?

yes, it actually is inevitable because all the cod fan-boys will continue to play cod and all the battlefield fan-boys will tell them how the so-called new gen of shooter is far superior

and all the mmo fan-boys will smirk at the fact their experience is not dependant on the whims of the schizophrenic backstabbing metric we call 'ping' nearly as much as shooter fans are when their bullets make a clear connect on their screen but whiz off and make a pattern like mickey mouse silhouette on the wall behind the intended target on their kill cam and you get called a horse loving noob face or some such ill contrived moronic insult, why? because that's what people do
( yes, ok table top gamers we know you have the most realistic physics based luck system, and have no ping issues, but do you has 1080p !?!?!? NO!!! < simulated idiot nerd-rage. )
they love to promote their own experience over any other because they either haven't seen the depth of yours or want to convince themselves that their purchase and method of wasting their life was the wisest possible choice in their 'unique' situation ( cough mind )

so.. yah that's why one franchise doesn't simply gobble up all the others
people get immersed in one style of play, or ui, or mechanic, or whatever and generally stick with what they know so they don't have to relearn everything and be called a horse loving noob face in several other games because they don't have the one-shot kill insta-gib weapon / attack combo that ignores physics, time, logic, ping and general game balance down yet.
( i'm looking at you stealthed commando sniper-bot weapon / kill-streak / attachment / perk / shiny collectable item of satanic doom )

enter the silver lined bright side of the equation:
more game developers, more games, more choice so you can pick and choose what experience suits you and even what price bracket you want to be in
you wouldn't get that if one game absorbs the entire fan-base of everything
( you really don't want battlefield to be the only shooter, i promise you in 5-6 years you'd regret it because the game devs would get bored, tired and go 'urrrrrmmm.. so graphics update? what about a remote controlled bomb? meh, let's just re-skin it and give it a new title, and add some snow nobody plays the single-player anyway )

which is one thing mmo's tried desperately to do and ruined allot of triple a producing studios fan-base because they didn't have the time / money / inclination to fork out for their mmo sub and more new games which is why we have less and less pc market for games even though we have an ever growing market to feed because on the whole around 30 million mmo players would otherwise be playing pc games again and developers would push a ton of cash on it knowing they have a fertile soil to dump their money tree game seeds in
and as some / most.. of this post is borderline off-topic, i'll stop here!

i think my answer to this would be, for the sake of the shooter community, and perhaps gaming as a whole i hope none until it's so outdated it dies of normal game decay by ceasing to be relevant

This. It doesn't matter whether or not a game sells more copies as long as it's fun to play.
It kinda matters to the developers though..but one would think that the game that is most fun to play automatically sells more copies.

That said I couldnt give a shit about CoD. I liked the first MW...but the rest have just been rehashes. Battlefield on the other hand.........mmmmmmmmmmm.....fun :D

Eventually the franchise will just cave in on itself. It baffles me that each subsequent entry in the series makes more and sells more than the last despite the drastic decrease in quality each year. And what really pisses me off is COD is the only game that can get away with charging the full RRP of £44.99, a fiver more than other new releases.

However they are shooting themselves in the foot already. They are making a Rockstar Soical Club style stats website thing that we will basically have to pay for if we want to use. Soon we will probably have a 2 hour campaign and 3 or 4 maps on the disc and then charge us even more for DLC.

Eventually in a few years better games will flood the market and COD will lose its 'Top Dog' status.

Something will.

COD took down Halo, something will take down COD.

Now, it won't kill the series, Halo is still the 2nd most popular FPS, and arguably game franchise, but something will bump COD down a notch.

What I was going to post up. :p

It will end up killing itself, it has been doing so already but I think the next few games might just show the rotten core being eaten by the Activition worm. Besides, I doubt Battlefield 3 will be a flop, with all the hype I think lots of people might convert from Call of Duty, I know I'm going to. I just need a PC that can hand it lol.

not to mention the cod elite thing there starting. even without paying for it, it just seems like a waste to time, as for battlefield it looks like its going to be a game of the year contender

I thought CoD was already skidding on the downhill slope after Black Ops. All you need is to put a stick in front of it and it'll tumble to the bottom of the hill.

It helps if you don't think of CoD as some horrible beast that needs to be slain. Like WoW, it is what it is. It will have a dedicated fanbase no matter what else comes along. New MMO's might come out but the staple of the OG WoW will remain, same with CoD. No amount of "super realistic warfare", "destructable buildings" or "uber lighting and smoke particles" will change CoD player minds or convert them. People seem to fail at realizing that it's the GAMEPLAY that CoD fans like. It's extremely fluid, it's very fast and super responsive, as opposed to something like say.. Killzone , and their virtual weight system where you are supposed to feel like your wielding a heavy gun and lumbering around. People buy CoD year in year out for the fast arcade action, it's been fun for 5 years for me, and MW3 will be just as fun.
