Hate to be the guy who spoils it but square enix has already said they aren't going to remake it because to make ff7 look like games do now it would be expensive and take too long due to the sheer size of the game. Not trying to be a dick this is something they actually said.

I know some people will disagree with me but I don't want there to be voice acting. That way people wont fight over the correct way to say names and summons.

Keep the chocobo breeding- you want those materias, you're going to work for them.

Actually put Yuffie and Vincent in the cutscenes and make that Lost Number safe easier to open.

Change the names of the upgraded materia to go along with the FFX magic naming.

Ruby is a freaking jerk and should be taken care of by top men.

That was one of the biggest problems I had with the game. Once you had Cloud, Tifa, and Cid, you rarely had any reason to use anyone else.
...I didn't use Tifa. The characters DID have different stat-rate growths. Vincent had best magic growth (after the first disk, nyuk), so I used him. And Barret had the best HP growth, I'd use him a lot with the strong armor that didn't have the materia slots and a cover with several counter-attacks.

Yes, Cid had a great limit-break, but his stats weren't as special and he never did reach 255 att. And Tifa... I don't... why?

Yeah, we all knew that, thanks for being a dick! :p Seriously though, this is where having a Bluray player will shine through, they could have an easier time programming a game of that size, as open world as all that... if they weren't trying to cross-console. And really, it'd still be wire-frames covered by mesh... just really good mesh. They don't have to make combat work like in newer games... really, they don't.

I wasn't thinking of FF8... thanks for that, by the way... but more about how Fable 3 did things, but more expanded upon.

This is offtopic a bit, but I think I'd enjoy a rpg in which the PC didn't level at all... instead your weapons did. Your weapons would have their own stats and abilities on which you could spend experience. Of course, you'd gain experience for a weapon by that weapon in battle.
Ever heard of Dark Cloud 1 and 2? Great RPGs that do exactly what you described.

I always wanted a remake of this game, because I know once they did it, they would make a TON of money.
This is something that people say a lot, but I'm not convinced that it would really be the case.

Current generation triple-A titles require a huge amount of money put into them, and so need to generate huge sales in return. How certain can Square Enix be that enough gamers will pay full price (£40 or $60) for a remake of a 15-year-old game? The central focus of a Final Fantasy game is the story, which loses a lot of impact when you already know what happens. It can be argued that Square Enix is a lot safer investing their money in new games with new characters and stories.

I realise that both Tomb Raider and Halo have had "anniversary" editions, but they're both far shorter games with (it follows) lower budgetary requirements to remake them. Even better; with Halo they were able to keep the original engine and (essentially) just paste some better graphics on top. To remake FF VII, Square Enix would need to start from scratch.

Maybe it will happen some day but - since they haven't done it so far - I'm guessing someone at Square Enix has done the maths.

The way I see it, Square should treat this game like a vintage car that needs a new coat of paint. All it needs is a graphics update (make the characters look like people or at the very least match the official artwork) and maybe some tweaking to the combat (something along the lines of FFX's style of fighting).

I think the first Dark Cloud game for the PS2 had something like that.

I had not heard of those games as I had basically missed the sixth generation of gaming until I got a Gamecube near the end.

...why yes, that does mean I've never played Dirge of Cerberus...

So, can you switch out weapons? Like... I've got my magic-intensive weapon but I need to suddenly be good at ranged kind of thing?

Just update it to HD graphics, no voice acting, a little bit of touch ups to the minigames without redesigning the whole package. Basically same game with a new coat of paint. It doesn't need a full on reworking.
But to me, without the two guys who made the series what it was (Sakaguchi and Uematsu) re-designing the game would be more or less destined for mediocre or might wind up ruining the nostalgia of the game for most people who would want it.

1) obviously, updated graphics. they dont have to be top-tier awesomeness, but at least make them as good as an "average" looking current game

2) updated dialog (though NOT VOICED)

3) in-game extras like more bosses, side quests, mini-games, etc. (while keeping the previous ones intact)

4) full orchestral soundtrack, updated (but not completely changed) sound effects

thats it, really. since it was one of my most played and most loved games, it'd be nostalgia heaven. hopefully square will realize that the game will sell like mad because it was already good and not try to change too much.

things i absolutely DON'T want to see:

1) voices. good god no. it didn't need them before, it doesn't need them now.

2) dramatically changed battle system. a real-time or similar battle system would ruin the game for me

3) dramatically changed story, gutted parts, etc. if they're gonna remake it, they should do it right, and include everything that was in the original

4) this is most important: a PS Vita or 3DS release. while yes, it would be great to get a re-release of FF7 in any form, a handheld release would be a gutted experience, and would ultimately mean that it would never see a full console/PC release.

The only thing I'd change is making the equpiment menu more streamlined. I remember it taking 5-10 minutes to re-organise all materia whenever I changed characters or got new gear.

If 7 was to actually be remade, peoples nostalgia-tinted glasses would finally shatter, and people would realise that Areith's death was poorly done, and that forcing Chocobos to fuck to get the most powerful spells was completely bullshit. People will finally realise that it's just mediocre at best.

NoPe, don't want a remake . Leave it as it is , a classic , plus isn't like really hard to remake a ps1 game? Hence the reason mgs1 wasn't included in the HD ultimate collection of MGS? I mean if they can't do it with mgs1 i doubt they xan with FF7. But No , don't make a remake , if gamers today can't look past graphics , too bad for them . Almost everyone in this thread wants to change somethig in the game , so rather than make a remake , make an entirelt new game.

No no, what I meant was: Since Sephiroth was, pretty much, an illusion until released by Cloud in the Northern Crater (spoiler alert); then, even though everyone saw Sephy kill Aeris... it was really Cloud stabbing her in the back.
Although I agree with you whole heartedly on a symbolic level, the original version of events should remain intact. The spirit Sephiroth had a physical presence. He killed people in the Shinra building, opened the door for cloud, carried Jenova's head around and even threw Materia at Cloud's stomach in the shinra mansion. Symbolically Sephiroth always represent the darkness within Cloud. Hence the advent children promotional art of them side by side, the "stay where you belong...in my memories"- "I will never be only a memory", and Cloud beating the crap out Aerith after giving the black materia to Sephiroth. Even the concept of a one-winged angel represents man's fall from grace. On an allegorical level, FF7 was always about the internal struggle between good and evil in one man, that played out on a epic scale as the results of that struggle would determine the fate of the planet! A lesson to us all

I would like to see them keep all the things that worked in the original game, only altering or replacing elements that caused problems or allowed for easy exploits. A more streamlined difficulty curve would be especially welcome, as would improved menus (it seems like they forgot how to design JRPG menus after the SNES, because there's no toher reason to abandon a system as intuitive as Super Mario RPG or Breath of Fire 3). Most importantly, I would like to see them retain the cartoonish-ness and sense of humor that made the original as engaging and entertaining as it was, rather than going for the unrelenting brooding and pseudo-realistic style of its sequels.

The minigames could probably use the most improvement, but overall I'd like to see something that's a revision of the original rather than a new game from the ground up (although I suppsose that might work if they wanted to go for Kingdom Hearts-style real time combat). If they didn't remake the game from square one, I would want it to cost $40 or less ($60 is a pretty ridiculous price for most games anyway).

The two biggest changes to the core gameplay I'd like would be a way to use characters not in the active party (maybe something like Endless Frontier) and a more fully realized airship (I've wanted another game to do that ever since Skies of Arcadia).

I probably would like to see a graphical update, perhaps a re-translation of the script, and maybe balance out some of the spells in the game. (Especially some of the Enemy Skill Materia spells such as Bug Guard and White Wind)

What makes you think that?
What makes me think that it should be Cloud that really stabbed her in the back? Even though, in that very same post, I already SAID that Sephiroth was an illusion?

Okay... because I think having a hero being SO manipulated that he could kill his love-interest while "seeing" his greatest enemy doing it would make for a great addition to the story.

And then you'd have to get over the fact that bad things happen to your favorite characters and learn to except that, sometimes, you can't just blame people for doing bad things. Then suddenly a whole depth of the world will be open to you, where everything isn't just black-and-white. And then you'd have to take motivations, cause-and-effect, and hidden agendas into consideration before taking it as red that someone is evil?

...well, okay, no. But that WOULD make the whole thing with Sephiroth's actions more sinister than just stabbing her did.

so its not yust me that know dead bodies float.
Okay, they ignored five different rules of physics there anyway, the body not floating didn't bother me. No no, what I meant was: Since Sephiroth was, pretty much, an illusion until released by Cloud in the Northern Crater (spoiler alert); then, even though everyone saw Sephy kill Aeris... it was really Cloud stabbing her in the back.
However, that 'illusion' was able to physically change things in the world- see the Shin-ra massacre, and the boat to Costa-del Sol. The first Palmer said that Sephiroth came and murdered the hell out of the President, and the second we see Sephiroth's ghost/illusion thing, and then he drops Jenova on you.
