"This report just in from the old media: somebody did something bad. Although this was probably a disproportionate response driven by anger or relationship problems, or involved someone who required therapy or drugs, it's come to our attention that the accused had at one time touched a game console. Since these are the new media that threaten our bottom line, we can conclude that video games and the internet turn otherwise normal people into sociopathic cannibal rapists. Now sports."

I blame this on ratings-seeking, and a very poor understanding of conditional probability. If I controlled the world, everyone would be required to learn Bayesian analysis before watching any news program where they quote "statistics" like "85% of all school shooters played video games". That statement is completely meaningless without other information.

I find the whole 'let's all blame videogames for violence' culture stupid because if a parent cannot control their child's, who cannot teach their kids right from wrong. I know that this isn't always the case, some people are just born bad, but if a parent cannot somehow control what their child watchs/plays then they are not doing what they should.

Fact of the matter is that it's not all that hard to teach your child reality from fantasy or to keep them from acessing things they shouldn't, heck my parents managed to do that when I was younger.

I'm not saying that it has anything to do with videogames, but teaching childern the difference between reality and fantasy, as well as right and wrong. Videogames are not to blame but parents and perhaps society to a lesser extent. This is because having teachers that give a damn about their students behaviour, good friends and such makes a difference.

Dude, it's like reading Fundie comments on everyday events, at first they're entertaining, but you build up a tolerance to it like any other drug and you just want them to get a fucking life.

You should totally tell us how that goes.
Well unfortunatley it wasn't as good as I hoped it would be, it was a guy talking about how research into games causing aggressive behaviour was fundamentally flawed because of goverment funding and dated and frankly rubbish test that were carried out on the subjects.

Then he told us about some research that he had done that had produced results that its actually games that people relate to more and have content that most people have real-life skills in like driving game that cause more aggressive behaviour than the totally fantantastic crazied shooty violent games.

But the irony was he research methods were just a flawed as the once he had ragged about earlier on in the lecture.

Also it was clear that the lecture was presented for non-gamers so most of the terminology was really patronising and the guy had little or no indepth knowledge into games and gamers.

Overall a bit of a waste of time.

It isn't anything new, every new medium of entertainment has at one point or another, been accused of turning children into depraved murderers, video games have just been hit harder than usual due to the new level of sensationalist reporting and their social stigma of being labelled as toys.

As far as evidence goes there are many facts, which disagree with the supposedly "scientific" assumptions

Kids who go on those rampages are already predisposed to violence, but not by video games. Banning video games due to this is like banning matches because somewhere a kid could cause a forest fire.

Statistically, in school massacres, kids who play video games are a minority, which when taken in to account with the fact that a majority of the population plays video games, technically means gamers are less likely to commit acts of violence.

That school persuasive speech topic really prepared me for this thread.

In advance, I apologise for my actions. At this moment in time, this message is purely precautional. For whatever reason I did what I did, it was not because of video games. You may see the pile of video games in my living room and the Xbox360 on the floor and think, "Oh god, she was a gamer and she must have done what she did because of them." It was not. Games are an outlet for me and I do not suffer from any kind of psychiatric problem that prevents me from discerning the imiginary world of a game from reality.

So please, do not blame them. They are entertainment, for those, in my opinion, need more mental stimulation and interactivity than TV and Films.

Thanks

(P.S. - I may have do what I did in response to a Twilight film)
But if you specifically mention that it was not video games, then 'they' (ignore my use of the generic they, I can't put any other label on them) might just say that you are specifically diverting attention from video games because they are the real cause...et cetera et cetera video game bashing.
Just a possibility, and knowing the media, not to far-fetched, if I say so myself...
