Yes, if you haven't played Half-Life 2 yet, then I dare say you are not a gamer!
Why it's just like playing any other FPS, except every now and then you have to drive the worst car ever.

What the hell? They're completely different games! You can't compare 'em!

Pick a different game to compare to it!
They're both shooters? I dunno.

He's mostly right you know. I'm not saying I agree with it, but that is fact.
He's basically comparing Mario to GTA 4, because you know, they both have guys with foreign accents in 'em.

It's a horrid comparison.
I didn't say it was a good comparison. But Mass Effect is a Shooter/RPG. Mario and GTA have not got similar game play to them, Mass Effect and Half Life do, you aim and shoot. It's vague yes, but not incorrect.
You can jump in GTA 4 if I remember correctly...
Don't be daft ^^; Mario is a Side Scrolling Platformer. GTA is a Sandbox game with guns, hookers and such.
Fine, be that way.

Lets compare... Mario to old school Prince of Persia then. That'd work better as a bad example, neh?

I think we're getting rather off topic ^^; But I would call those similar games.

Hardly, this topic is fucked up on its' own anyway.

In Mario, you kill enemies by jumping on them and kill turtles and mushrooms in a stylized land, while in PoP you side scroll as a fairly realistic looking chap in a dark dungeon and die half the time. Also, you have only an hour to beat the entire game. They're completely different games and liking one will not mean you like the other.

They're so vastly different that I don't see how liking mass effect is relevant to liking Half-life.
What are some other games you like?

Agreed.

Anywho, to answer the OP, they are both very different games in their gameplay - HL2 has much simpler combat mechanics, but they have a good physics engine and tend to use it inventively. Also, HL2 has a wholly linear story without any form of side quests. And the Half Life series has a more...mysterious form of story telling that leaves alot more mysteries for you to debate over ;).

That said, I like both, and I definitely think you'll get your money's worth from that pack you mentioned.

The Half Life (1) games are somewhat hard to play these days as the graphics are almost eye-hurtingly bad by todays standards, but if you can tolerate them, you'll also find alot of joy their too, I suspect.

Oh, quick note - you do not have to have played Half Life 1 before Half Life 2. Half Life 2 does take place some time after Half Life 1, but its not required to understand HL2. If you really need to, there's probably a summary of HL1's plot on the internet somewhere.

They control in a very similar way and the Mario stages have a time limit, they are side scrolling platformers.

As the others have said, the two games are very different to one another, but if you like creative shooters, Half-Life is a good pick. While nowhere near as visually stunning as the two MEs, Half-life is very much an enjoyable game. Just don't bash it for it's dated graphics.

Also, watch for the Garg :D

That just made my day!

On topic. the HL series is pretty dated, I am not a fan.

It is just your classic FPS romp with a few things we now look down on, vehicle sections etc but you can do alot worse.

The only thing they have in common is that you shoot people at times. That's it!

Do you like First Person Shooters? Yes? Half Life is worth your while. If you don't; move along.

Actually Half Life is a lot more similar to Halo and CoD games, it's all FPS with scripted events.

Only difference is Half Life is a lot more nerdier FPS with a 'The Outer Limits' vibe where as Halo/MW are more for the fratboy douchebag variety....joking...lol

Well as you can see from my avatar I love Half-Life :)

Mass Effect and Half-life are both COMPLETELY different games though. I did love Mass Effect 2 a lot though, if that helps you in any way.

I say, buy the complete pack for sure, you won't regret it.

They are completely different in just about every way other than people, monsters and machines are shot at pretty often.

I like shooters with real intellectual depth behind them, like Mass Effect or Metroid Prime, but tend not to like the hardcore stuff like Call of Duty or Halo. Would the Half-Life Complete pack from Steam be worth it for me?

This is sort of like asking, "I like Castlevania; would I like Final Fantasy?"

Yeah, get Half-Life.

I've never understood that phrase. I find comparing apples and oranges is pretty easy. They're both fruit are they not?
There was a scientific study once where they used a spectrometer to look at both an concluded that they are extremely similar indeed. Oranges in some languages are referred to as a type of apple. The Greeks called them Golden Apples.
