I agree with everyone else, the two are really hard to compare, outside of shooting aliens.

If you just like good games in general, half-life is a series you shouldn't pass up. Make sure you start with the first half-life! No sense in playing HL2 if you don't know what's going on.

ME and Half Life are totally unrelated but at this point i'm just repeating what everyone else has said. If you like lever puzzles, you'll love Half Life 2 because those are that games favorite. In all fairness I actually enjoyed Half Life 2 it just took a long ass time to get into it (it took me, I shit you not, a year and a half to beat Half Life 2 because I kept getting bored or frustrated and quitting for like months at a time. Then near the end of Half Life 2 it started getting really interesting and I beat it, ep. 1 and 2 all in a weekend)

I'm not Half-Life's biggest fan or anything. I didnt like the first game much. But HL2 is definately worth taking a look at. It's fun and interesting and any gamer should at least give it a whirl once.

One caveat, HL2's fans played it when it was new. So things that they loved will not blow you away in todays market the way it blew them away in 2005. It's the same with us Hardline Halo fans who were blown away by the first one. People who didn't play it when it was new don't get why we go on and on about it. It's just human nature to remember things that you've enjoyed fondly. Rose-tinted glasses and all that.

The bottom line is that HL2 has aged well enough and any gamer should at least give it a try. The see-saw puzzles aren't going to blow you away since every game worth its salt has a physics engine nowadays. But go into it with an open mind, remember that it's over 5years old, and I'm sure that you'll get more than ample entertainment for your purchasing dollar. If you like good games, you could do much much worse. If I were a betting man, I'd put money on you having a good time playing HL2 and its episodes 1 & 2 expansions.

All that said, Mass Effect doesn't even play into the equation. I see no relevant comparison in gameplay or story structure. Contra had guns as well, but I wouldn't let it play into your buying decisions regarding HL2. :)

They really aren't the same. Unless you're comparing the games by how deep their story is or how developed their characters are. In that sense, get Half-life!

I like both of them, but they are very different games. Mass Effect is strong in story, dialogue and presentation, while Half Life is strong in atmosphere, game play and characters. (Not saying one doesn't have the other aspects, but I just see who has the strongest in these fields.)

Hit or miss if you'll like it. They are very different games.

Well I loved Mass Effect but couldn't really get into Half Life. I didn't dislike it, I just wasn't in awe of it.
But that's just my opinon, you could well be different. It's worth remembering that in both gameplay and theme about the only two things Half Life and Mass Effect have in common is that they are both examples of science fiction and they both feature aliens.
But still if you consider yourself a fan of science fiction then you should probably like this game somewhat, after all I certainly enjoyed the theme and atmosphere of Half Life even if I never really got too deep into gameplay.

So I guess I'm saying, you may well do but won't know until you find out for yourself.

You'll like half-life no matter what, i say.
It's the law, like Half-Life, or get deported.

You can't compare them! They're two different types of amazing games in their genre!

Pick a different game to compare to it!
They're both shooters? I dunno.
...

Get out >.<
He's mostly right you know. I'm not saying I agree with it, but that is fact.
He's basically comparing Mario to GTA 4, because you know, they both have guys with foreign accents in 'em.

It's a horrid comparison.
I laughed, you're a genius on comparisons.

You'll like Half-Life 2 and the episodes, no exceptions, it's some epic games there.

Dont try half life 1, its way too hard, HL2 on the other hand would be less demanding (easier)

I cant even finish off three marines in HL1(on easy) with out finishing all my guns ammo or dying while in HL2 I can eradicate an army and still survive...

Yes, if you haven't played Half-Life 2 yet, then I dare say you are not a gamer!
Why it's just like playing any other FPS, except every now and then you have to drive the worst car ever.
No dear sir I dare say it is not. You cannot argue that Half Life 2 isn't one of the greatest games ever created, and has influenced the industry ever since its release. This game is surely on any video gamer buffs top ten list, just as Citizen Kane or Casablanca would be on the top ten list of a film buff.

Well, maybe. I don't really think that there's much correlation beyond interest in sci-fi.

For what it's worth I really like both, then again I also like Halo and Call of Duty (campaign only for CoD). I also like Metroid Prime, and Fallout 3, and Gears of War, and I could go on but I won't.

The fact that you like MP and ME but dislike COD indicates you have good taste. As playing Half Life 2 will leave you with a feeling that can be described as an ugly mix of ennui and depression. Half Life 1 is fun however.
I'd like to know how this myth aboot Half Life having intellectual depth got started. I think it has something to do with that whole conspiracy to dump pigs blood on Gabe Newell when they finally finish the series.

Mass Effect has way more conversations in it. 'Cause Shepard actually talks. Half-Life is a FPS, so it's very different. Like others have said, it's more akin to Halo. But it's actually good. So liking Mass Effect doesn't necessarily say you'll love Half-Life. I love Mass Effect, it's my favorite series, but I think Half-Life is okay. Didn't rock my world or anything.

I have never tried it, what i hear about half life makes it sound a little bit lame to be honest. and the HUGE amount of love for it that i read on this site kind of makes me not want to bother, because there is no way it could live up to this amount of hype that people give the game.
honestly i don't like the sound of a load of gravity gun puzzles, and the gravity gun sounds very lame to me, but then thats just me.

I did like the campaign modes in modern warfare (the first one was better but 2 was still good) and i di enjoy halo 3 the first time i played it. so maybe im just not geared up towards that kind of game.

if i want to think a lot about puzzles and stuff or take in a good story i play rpgs where i can play a part in the story, and i use shooters for mindless killing. so is half life for me? am i justified in not bothering with it?

Since the Op has stated that he was gunna give it a try I think the real question now is....

A) Did you really try Half-Life?

and

B) Did you like it?

Half Life is very, very different from MA. You would have to play it to see what I mean. You really can't compare them.
I disagree, if anything they're a lot alike. HL2s romance subplots copy MAs exactly.
