If Jesus hated Christmas, would you still celebrate it?

Christmas is pretty much a secular holiday at this point anyway. I don't understand why we don't just completely remove the 'Christ' part and have two different holidays- one to remember Jesus and celebrate his birth, and another to give gifts to each other as a sign of affection and community. Keep 'Decemberween', as it shall be called, on Dec 25, and have Jesus' birthday celebration on his actual birthday, which I think is sometime in September?

So no, if Jesus did return and disliked Christmas, I'd still celebrate it. Granted, I'd probably be way too busy dealing with the Earth-shattering revelation that the Judeo-Christian God actually exists, but still.

I'd still celebrate it, we would just call it something else.

Commercialistmas.

Or

Capitalistmas.

Or

Wewanttomakelotsofmoneyandboosttheeconomysoletsbuyexpensivepresentsmas.

Hell, at least then we'd be being honest.

I'd still celebrate it! Mainly coz Big J has nothing to do with my religious celebrations at that period of time. Or any period of time really.
Also the presents/big feast/seeing family and friends/getting very drunk, is too good to give up as well.

Being an atheist, I could not care less what a guy who, probably historically existed, but is long dead, would have thought. I celebrate christmas as a time to be with my family and to give gifts, not for any religious reason at all whatsoever.

Yup. I'm an atheist, so for me, X-mas is just about giving shit to the people you love and socializing with family.
Religion has absolutely nothing to do with it for me.

I'm an atheist, so I celebrate christmas without all the religious stuff.

But if Jesus came back, then that would obviously mean that I was wrong about my religious views so I would probably do as he told me.

I'd laugh, then keep going on. He can continue being a martyr and nail himself to the cross of his own indignation.

In my view, if Jesus was half as nice a guy as he was supposed to be, I doubt he'd hate Christmas. Might be disappointed and hurt by the rampant commercialization and bickering over Furbies, but not hateful. He might take heart from the family-oriented aspect it has developed over the years (it's never been a religious holiday for my family, because we use it as a reason to gather as much of our extended members as possible together and have a good time).

If he did hate it, though, I'd know he wasn't the man he was supposed to be, and I wouldn't care about his feelings on the matter. I'd still get together with my family, and the messiah could go hang.

Well, I don't really celebrate it anyway, but if I was a christian who celebrated christmas and Jesus Christ, my lord and saviour came to me and told me to stop it, I think I would.

Christmas isn't truly a Christian holiday. Like many Christian holidays they are basically Pagan holidays that have been adopted by Christianity.

Even forgetting this, Christmas is so far removed from Christianity now it doesn't even matter. I still celebrate the festivities, but completely avoid the religious side of it.

So if jesus doesn't like it... well then he's basically the Grinch then isn't he.

This whole thread stems from a random thought from a dude older than I am who claims he had this little epiphany while watching a tv show for 5 year old girls? Well, I'm outta here.

But before I go, I remember there was a comedian who said something along the lines of "Over Christmas, I like to dress up as Jesus and I go to malls. And I walk through the malls saying, 'No! No! This isn?t what it?s supposed to be about people.'"

I think Bill Hicks puts it best on this one. "So why do Christians wear crosses around their neck; you think when Jesus comes back he's gonna want to see a fucking cross?"

As for the question in OT, well, this hasn't been about Jesus in a while, has it. I mean...it's a religion thing, not a Jesus thing.

Well if he didn't like his name being associated with the celebration, I'd start calling it Winter Solstice Festival.

I don't celebrate Christmas for religious reasons. I do it because I have kids.

If Christmas was cancelled then my kids would be upset so, alas, Jesus would have to pucker up and plant a large (no tongues) kiss on my shiny bottom.

So no, no I wouldn't stop celebrating Christmas even if it would save me money. My wife wouldn't allow the kids to be upset and, unfortunately for me, the wife is the boss of the house.
The wife/partner/girlfriend is the boss of every house man.

OT: Naaaah I celebrate it because shinies are exchanged and I like the food.

Also this ^

And I'd like to throw in that Christmas shouldn't be that big a deal if you're a christian, Easter should be more important, and is in many parts of the world.

Not that I give a fuck either way.

This got me thinking, what if Jesus came back, and after being disgusted with the over-commercialization and whatnot associated with Christmas, declares that he no longer wishes anyone to celebrate it.
What would you do? Would you stop celebrating Christmas?
I'd tell him to stop bad-mouthing the pagan holiday of Saturnalia, also known as the Winter Solstice.

Seriously, Jesus has no say about Christmas. The man was born in the spring or summer as is clearly noted in the Bible.

The Catholic church wanted to convert pagans, so they put a holiday on the same day as the Solstice so that people didn't have to give up their traditions. The "Christmas Tree" for instance, is a pagan symbol of eternal life (because, unlike other trees, evergreens live all winter long).

So yeah, Jesus can go criticize hanukkah, since that's actually a holiday from his religion.

As a Secularist and a Historian for me Christmas is pretty much just an enjoyable societal holiday, so frankly I wouldn't care about the opinion of a long dead dude from Galilee. Though I might feel a little bad for him, I mean his birthday was MOVED for political convenience and is now associated with a great deal of rampant greed... It's not exactly the way I would want to be remembered.
