If our faith in humanity is lost, why don't we just blow our brains out right now?

At the end of the day, I am human too. Figure I can make a small difference in the world with my actions.

What about being a part of the solution to the problems humanity causes? And yes, it is possible, and no, I don't mean killing people (which is what, for some reason, people on The Escapist sometimes assume I mean). That would obviously be extreme and ridiculous. It actually wouldn't solve a thing for the environment, since it would take a long time to right itself and when the next intelligent race evolves, they might make the same mistakes. No, if we do really think the Earth has value, then humanity has to live, and we have to fix our own problems, and the planet's.

That is harder than giving up. It's easier to say "oh it's too late" and constantly reaffirm your impression of humanity as this destructive monster rather than getting off your butt and doing something to prove yourself wrong.

What it would take is devoting a good part of your life to improving the environment, to negate the effects that the people who are too lazy to help are making on the Earth. To perhaps lending an ear to green movements instead of chanting "the end is nigh" and doing nothing to empower yourself.

If you're searching for meaning, you have to find it for yourself. You don't get a purpose forced on you, mostly. You have to go out there and make it for yourself. And even the dark and edgy doom and gloom specialists on this forum have a chance at doing that if they ever stop complaining and do something. (Of course, they might be trying and despairing because it's hard. I can understand that too.)

If you do nothing, you're not despairing, however much you might pretend to be. At the core, I'd guess that you're being apathetic. And that is one thing that I, personally, do not respect.

Oh, thank you. I'm glad someone covered this for me. It's silly how often this happens, even on this very forum.

Though it's not just about having a lack of conviction, necessarily.

Fair point. If we believe Humanity is a complete embarrassment upon the Universe, why do we still care if a thousand unnamed and unknown people were killed half a world away? Why would we care that we could wipe ourselves off the Planet if we so wish?

One is perhaps, the will to survive[sub]Which i'm sure most have said this point[/sub] But another is, perhaps Hope.
Deep down, a person is willing to believe that there is something better, that no matter what shit we ALL are in, that everything will be alright.

Well, at the very least, i speak for myself. I can be cold and Rational if i want to. I live in one of the shittiest places in the entire world. The Countries that are worst than us in the Corruption scale are in Africa! By all rights, i should have killed myself when i realized that! Yet i haven't, and there is absolutely NO guarantee that the Political candidates of my country CAN make "everything better". Yet i'm still here. Hope, can be very irrational sometimes, don't you think?

I've lost my faith in humanity, and I think that as a race we are pretty much shit... I'm not trying to be edgy or emo, because I've actually seen some of the best and worst we humans have to offer and unfortunately the bad far outweighs the good. I've accepted this and moved on with my life, I don't blow my brains out because its not going to change anything... Plus I enjoy my life and plan on enjoying it for as long as I have it.

As a guy who has faith in humanity I can see why they wouldn't want to commit suicide (Suicide shouldn't be attempted under any circumstances!) but I often think about this. If every human being that is, ever was and ever shall be is so shit then what do we have to compare them to in order to come to the conclusion that we're all shit?

I Wish I posessed your courage to say what's basically the truth about this matter on these forums.

No faith in humanity, eh? But I bet you have enough faith in the police and judiciary department to stop you from running amok under pain of lifetime imprisonment.

I'm sure the OP doesn't need reminding that people in general will find that putting up with what irks us is a darned sight better than 25 years or more of Prison Love.

Killing yourself won't make things better is one. And the only thing that can trigger the suicide effect is if you're disappointed in YOURSELF!

And in all honesty, the people who say "I've lost faith in humanity" doesn't mean they have looked at themselves and been disappointed. They usually just have a massive ego telling themselves they are doing nothing wrong.

That is my theory, that might piss of the right people into thinking otherwise.

Because that's giving up. Making even the smallest difference in this crazy world would be worth it.

because it's the suicidal life wasters that lower my faith in humanity. One of the greatest virtues, in my opinion, is the ability to make light of suffering, and never lose hope

I share this sentiment entirely. We can all sit here and complain about the horrible things humanity has done, but if we even look around our computers, we can find some very positive things humanity has done, or at least indirect products of very positive things from humanity. Sure, we can watch the news and we'll see all these reports about the horrors of being human, but that's just because the media know that bad news sells way more than good news. This is actually partly because we're surrounded by good things all the time. They may not be huge advances in humanity; those don't happen every day. But when it comes to good things about people vs. bad, good wins out due to strength in numbers. Many, many little good things people do every day help to make this world a good place to live in. Sure, some will start a war, spread injustice, or commit acts of terror, but most people just don't do that. Most people want to just live out their lives in peace and happiness, and if they would meet you, would gladly do something nice for you, sometimes even without you asking them. I'm a believer that humanity is generally good. It's just that while we are good, we certainly aren't perfect, and I'm not going to lament for the world every time someone messes up, because we all mess up sometimes. Some just mess up on a larger scale than others.

Even more than that, it has really become kind of a common way to say "This is unbelievably bad."

Because we like to live? Faith in humanity and the will to live are two completely different things.

Humanity is very destructive, so not having faith in it is understandable. But wanting to keep alive is an instinct. Therefore, even though someone lacks faith in humanity, they will want to stay alive.
Hubilub hit it spot on!
And some people that have lost their faith in humanity may actually be able to make a difference in the future too. That's why I won't blow my brains out, because I may make a difference one day.

Somebody's a little dark today aren't they?

Just because you dislike most of humanity (who doesn't) it doesn't mean you need to top yourself.

While I dislike myself as much as the rest of humanity, why would I kill myself when the people who made me lose faith to start with are living perfectly comfortable lives, making ridiculous threads about things with no correlation? I'd much rather watch people complain about "whiney emo kids" because they have assumed everyone's lives are as privileged as theirs, and where I can, cause suffering akin to that I have endured.

...This ended up sounding much more hilarious than I had intended.
