I would remove the religious aspect, of the dark ages.

Think of how today would look...

I'd like to know what happened if the Atomic Bombs were not dropped and what would happen if they were not created. I'm quite curious as to what other events would follow.
the allies estimated that it would have cost one million casualties to take the main islands. those are just allied casualties, that doesn't count all the Japanese they'd have to go through, which would include women and children at that point. they would have thrown everything they had at them. the Atomic bombs saved a lot of lives and suffering.

Make it so that Columbus never reaches America or give native americans some mcguffin to make them super-advanced compared to Europe at the time. Think if the native americans somehow discovered Europe instead of europeans "discovering" America.

Conquistadors get their asses handed to them by the indian cultures of Mid-America. Just to unearth all that knowledge that was destroyed by the Slaughtering Spanish.

And then we'd find out that they all were just recipes for various meals with cocoa beans in them.

That's obvious. The Atomic Bombs are effectively what ended the war prematurely, and though it caused the deaths of many many Japanese civilians, about 200,000, it potentially prevented even more casualties from both sides from occurring.

What I'm curious about is how much longer the war would be, what events would take place that didn't because of the bomb, and how different the world would be without an atomic bomb, if it is different at all.

First, I'd have Russia find some form of external funding to keep it's empire in tact through the cold-war and beyond. (I figure it'd sparked more of the constant one-upping, which might have led to a more aggressive space race to colonize mars!)

Another one,
I'd stop the assassination of Franz Ferdinand of Austria.
I wonder how the Germans would have grown had they not been involved (And lost) both world wars.

Anddddd, I'd like to see what would have happened if Darius the Great hadn't succumbed to illness after the revolt in Egypt. Mainly to see if the empire would still have crumbled under Xerxes

I don't want to do something that will vastly change history, just something that will gently nudge it back in the right direction.

This is easy with the way things are in the US today. I would go back in time and prevent Obama from being elected. The one thing I would see as a problem coming from it is that the Republicans probably wouldn't have taken Congress in the last election.

There are a few things I didn't agree with McCain on because he had some similar views compared to Obama, but he wouldn't have been so fast with his plans that we would have had time to vote him out before he implemented anything like what Obama has done, and put in a more respectable Conservative, because McCain was the farthest from Conservative as a Republican can be.

Europe would be completely under German control.....twice.
Not quite. The US would still have been part of the Commonwealth, Her Majesty would have ordered the soldiers in to the fight from day 1, the war probably would have been over a lot sooner and a lot less people may have died. American inaction until after Pearl Harbour cost the world a lot, but of course your history books only portray americans as comic book style heroes who flew in, busted hitler's head and then zapped off again leaving a grateful world bowing behind you in less than a week.

I agree with the original poster who suggested changing the outcome of the revolutionary war. America, and the world, would be in a much different (and most likely better) place if you'd never left the commonwealth. You'd all have free health care, quality education, a decent wage and a lot better working conditions (like 4 - 6 weeks vaction instead of 2, paid sick leave, paid maternity leave, better superannuation payments... the list goes on and on).

The rest of us wouldn't be facing the constant threat of terrorism, a continuing global finacial crisis, surging resource prices, floods of refugees from countries you're currently blowing the shit out of, and we'd probably all have the flying cars and jetpacks that were supposed to be common after the year 2000, since america wouldn't be spending all its money on bombs and guns.

Hmmm, that's a world I'd love to see.

-----------

OT: I'd go back and change the bible so that Jesus was a pot-smoking hippie who loved sex, drugs and rock & roll. Also, his apostles would be 10 supermodels, a huge black dude, and a midget.

Fund Nikola Tesla
C'mon who doesn't want wireless electricity!

and just to see what happens in the future
catch the apple before it hits Issac Newton
:D Actually I think Nikola had quite good funding :), but I would have liked to see the Tesla's gravity power developed more ;)

But to the topic: I would have wanted to stop these fake war starting shots [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shelling_of_Mainila].

If the moslems had won the battle of Toulouse. It would be interesting to see if Europe and the middle east would get along if they both belonged to Islam.

I would have any one of the many sniper missions the Allies sent to assassinate Hitler be a success.

I would introduce gunpowder to Native Americans, just to see what it would be like if they had the capability to become as advanced as Spain by the time they were invaded.

Either : Stop the atomic bomb from being made
Or: Make the indians beat the first Americans out of the place for good.
