Everyone has thought of this at least once in their life. What would be the one thing you would have from all of science fiction?

I would personally have the Holodeck from Star Trek:TNG to live out my fantasy life.
I think you got it spot on. The holodeck... that would be incredible.
I don't get this. Why just have an awesome fantasy life when you can have an awesome REAL life?
Well... look at it this way. If I picked a weapon (lightsaber, phaser, etc), what would I do with it? Become a mercenary? Avenger? Having an awesome weapon isn't gonna stop someone else from putting your melon into their crosshair. Maybe a starship, xwing fighter, or the like; I could travel anywhere and meet interesting people and see great things. And hopefully none of those people, things, or locales try to kill me. :)

Now - let's take the holodeck. First, I could 'create' a holoversion of any of the weapons, and have fun with 'em, without the very likely possibility of getting whacked. I could also use the holodeck to simulate travel to any known location, and make up all sorts of fantastical places either from history, or straight out of my imagination. And again, without the chance of dying there.

And also, and one of the really most intriguing aspects of the holodeck. Make it your living quarters. Also wanted an indoor pool? Huge game room? Tennis court? Bowling alley? Arcade? Big screen tv? Convert one bedroom of my humble ranch home into the holodeck, and I could have any or all of that.

However, I will say that the person who picked replicators had a GREAT idea. Holodeck items aren't real after all...

EDIT: Oh, I don't mean to imply that I think anyone else's choices were bad ones. Everything I've read is quite cool in it's own way.

an energy sword from halo... its as effective as a lightsaber just without the possibility of dropping it and cutting your leg off

River Tam. <3
(she was in a box, so i hope that makes her qualified as an "item"?)

if she doesn't count, i'd pick a lightsabre (assuming star wars qualifies as sci-fi)

if star wars is not considered sci-fi (i certainly don't) i'd go with a replicator (Star Trek)

EDIT: of course the replicator comes before a lightsabre. like, what the hell?

Why waste my time with one science fictional reference when I could use one to reference all science fiction?

I want that time travelling device that Hermione was using (I forgot what it is called) the third Harry Potter book. I could use that right about now.

A TARDIS.

It opens up all kinds of options!
Hell to the yeah. Travel to any place or time? I want! Or the Iron Man suit...or the War Machine suit. Or a teleportation device. Definitely one of them.

Actually, this is quite a lot better. It isn't portable like a simple fuckable robot, but you have variety of applications.

Like fuckable robots!

Infinite Improbability Drive. Would be a load of fun.
Yeah, but you have to do all that tedious mucking about with improbability fields. The starship Bistromath would be a far better choice.

In all seriousness though, I would have to say... personal teleporter. Maybe.

Or a fuckable robot.

I'd have said the Hitch-hiker's guide to the galaxy but if I look up wikipedia on an iPad its pretty much the same thing. So I'll say the scientific formula from the Foundation books that allow you to remove the bullshit from any statement.

they tried it on a politician in the book and found there was nothing left in anything he said.
