For real animals, gotta go with an orca. I've loved those BAMFs since I was a kid, and I think it would make a great guard animal. I mean, who's gonna rob a house with a killer whale living in a big fuck-off moat in the yard?

A serval
Because it's a mini-big cat and they can actually bred to be pets. Of course they require a bit more investment than a typical cat or dog.
Not as realistic would be a cheetah.
While they can be trained and have been used as hunting animals, they'd simply require a lot of land; and gazelles.

Either a wolf or a fox. Not only are they super cute as cubs, but they retain much of that and add on a ton of coolness when they become adults. Animals that can be both cute and badass looking at the same time are awesome. And, as for Fantasy, an axew so I can get a frickin' Haxorus. Who wouldn't want a Haxorus?
