If you've never played a game, you shouldn't really call yourself a gamer. But then again, I really don't particularly mind if you do.

This is a really messed up way of saying, "this is a really good game and you should play it." People get passionate about the things they enjoy and really don't think about what they say. The best thing to do is never take what anyone says too seriously and always be able to maintain your own opinion.

This is a classic "No True Scotsman" style fallacy. Basically, they just choose to redefine gamer to suit their purposes. And usually that defintion is "someone who agrees with me".

"No True Scotsman puts sugar on his porridge. I certainly don't."
"That's not true. My uncle Scotty McScotscot from Glasgow puts sugar on his porridge."
"Ah, but no TRUE Scotsman puts sugar on his porridge."

The people who make this distinction are idiots. Ignore them.

Starcraft, starcraft, and more starcraft. Also, you need to have been playing it since you were 7 years old.

I can't stand people who say stuff like that. Gamers are free to pick their own games. I personally have never played any Call of Duty or Final Fantasy games, and yet I excel in other games similar to those, such as Team Fortress 2 or Chrono Trigger.

On a similar topic, being mainstream is for the weak-willed.

people like to think that if they did something others didn't, they're better.

OT: If you haven't played Pong, or something with easily detectable bits in it, your not a gamer.

I theorize anyone who dictates which played games constitute the worth of other gamers realize they've spent far too much unproductive time playing. The only way to deal with the cognizance is to develop a superiority complex and look down on people sane enough to keep their hobby in check.

Recently ive been coming across alot of people saying things like "If you havent played this game you arent a gamer" or "If you havnt seen this movie you suck" and stuff like that when they just saw it the first time themself maybe a day or two ago

Anyway, whats your opinion on people doing stuff like this?
I've actually played very few games by most standards, yet I consider myself a gamer.

Don't think anybody's made a point of it like that to me though. (Maybe I just run with the wrong crowd.)

They aren't omnipotent / all-knowing so their opinion doesn't bother me in the slightest.

Incidentally, if you didn't fight in the Console War you aren't a gamer.
Ahh the console war, Many a gamer perished in those dark days.....I allied myself with Microsoft, Took a few scars and Three red rings to the face though. Now its more just the console debate. (I miss the full blown war).

OT: Do you like games? Do you play games? Do you own a console/PC to play said games? If yes you are a gamer

Retarded is my by description. It's always based on taste.
I've not seen Titanic or Avatar and they are the top grossing films of all time.
Or for example, I've not intention to play ME2, MW2, COD4 or any other FPS.

But, I've been a gamer for as long as I remember. My first game was Pong on the machine that only played pong variants many, many years ago. We had a Times Sinclair, a Commodore 64, a NES, a SNES, etc...

Elitism sucks.
It all comes down to a millenia of social bonding instincts.

People have all kinds of weird quirks that come from the idea that you have to be part of a special group: racism ("The immigrant savages are coming to take my job and steal my children!"), faux-morality ("The waltz / dime novels / comic books will destroy society as we know it!"), sport fanaticism ("You don't support my football team, I'll crack a beer bottle over your head"), etc. Unfortunately this kind of thing will always be around.

Luckily, there's usually some countermeasure of common-sense to this kind of thing - the sane voices will generally be more numerous, if less shrill. Unluckily, the shrill voices are very often the ones who find themselves in powerful positions (an Attorney-General in Australia, for example. Naming no names.)

He probably means the great console war of the 16 bit gen, Sega Vs Nintendo.
But either way, Console wars are retarded.
Gee thanks Buzzkillington.

But yeahh they are stupid...i was merely fashioning a joke out of the fabric of space and time

I saw a thread like this a few weeks ago, and made one with the same basic idea behind it just a week ago...

Anyway, I'm going to have to go with that if you haven't even THOUGHT about playing these, have little idea of what they are, you aren't a gamer though I know people will ***** because some of these are pretty niche.

Okami
Shadow of the colossus
Sonic the Hedgehog 3
Super Mario Bros 3
-insert RPG here-
Beyond Good and Evil
Psychonauts
Eternal Darkness

I can already tell that by most of these standards I will not be considered a gamer. I'll say "Myst" just to be difficult. And old.

I've been told that I'm not a gamer because I've never played a Final Fantasy game. I just don't like JRPG combat, its not exciting enough for me.
