Um... a video game..?

Call me crazy, but I'm pretty sure that someone who's played nothing but Viva Pinata is just as much a gamer as someone who's played nothing but Tetris or Super Mario or something.

Well... it is obnoxious are presumptuous, for others to think they know what makes a gamer. What right do they have to decide? To be honest, some of the best "gamer types" that i know, don;t even like video games.

I've been told that I'm not a gamer because I've never played a Final Fantasy game. I just don't like JRPG combat, its not exciting enough for me.
That's understandable. Just like people hwo slam Eve. Gaming is NOT a second job that you have to force yourself to trudge through. But at least you tried it.

edit- nevermind.

This type of elitism really annoys me. That might be because I've been on the receiving end of it a few too many times, whether it was games, movies, comicbooks, or novels.

It's not because I've avoided these things, but I'll admit it...I'm a dirty immigrant so what's 'essential' to English-speaking culture is not necessarily what I was raised on or what I sought out or what my family could afford. This does not mean I can't/don't enjoy these, it means I've probably never heard of them until they have just been mentioned and "OH MY GOD how could you never have seen/read/etc. that!" has come up.

Some fuckin idiots were talking about how apparently because they saw a certain movie that italian americans live in a "hood", and since that's what I am I said "That's farthest from the truth" so they asked me if I have seen a certain movie, which I responded "No", though I would have said that if mid-two-letter-word they hand't said "then you can't talk". I want to fucking kill those motherfuckers.

I take my heritage seriously.

Never heard anyone say that. It would get annoying if someone was doing that to me though, jerks.

It's silly. I like gaming as a hobby for my own reasons, I don't need to have played all those old 'classics' to be a gamer.

I hear this a lot from the gamers that seem to think games were so much better 'back in the day' and give me an endless list of old games "I need to play" because apparently they're so much better than these newfangled games I'm playing. However, my experience with games older than a decade or so haven't been great experiences, so I avoid most older games like the plague.

I don't hear that very often. Although once my friend told me I couldn't even consider myself a man because I had yet to play Mess Effect.

I punch people like that.
And then I spend a lot of time running away from them, because I'm not very strong and possess a terrible allergy to pain.

I bet I can beat all your stories. OK, here it goes.

"I haven't played a final fantasy."
"What! Your not a gamer, get lost you loser."

He has only seen another person play it for 30 minutes.

Alot of my 'friends' go on saying "You havent played _____! Get lost, don't talk to us!" or "You don't play the xBox, you cannot talk to us!'.

You're not a gamer unless you have played Earth Defence Force 2017 - FACT.
You, my good sir, win the internet for the day!

I saw a thread like this a few weeks ago, and made one with the same basic idea behind it just a week ago...

Anyway, I'm going to have to go with that if you haven't even THOUGHT about playing these, have little idea of what they are, you aren't a gamer though I know people will ***** because some of these are pretty niche.

Okami
Shadow of the colossus
Sonic the Hedgehog 3
Super Mario Bros 3
-insert RPG here-
Beyond Good and Evil
Psychonauts
Eternal Darkness
Could it just be me, or do you sound idiotic for having a very closed ended list? I don't see a single shooter on that list and considering Doom and Quake are probably two of the greatest video games of all time, you stand to learn from someone who's spent a few years trudging Knees Deep In The Dead.

OT: Not to knock anyone who's posted here so far, with roads paved with good intentions with saying anyone who uses this turn of phrase is stupid/elitest/troll/a bad guy looking for trouble, but I think there are true "Gamers" and people who aren't. However, I would have to say that so few people fall under my personal definition of gamer that it doesn't really matter.

To me, a gamer is someone who plays games. All games. They don't descriminate against a particular genre (which is why I called out Plurralbles on his/her list) of games, nor do they only play video games. A gamer is somewho who enjoys gaming as a whole. One minute they might be shooting up people in Modern Warfare 2, the next they're owning dealing into a few hands of Mahjong and then the next they're solving the weekly crossword in the newspaper. To say that people who just play a couple of genres of video games, or even just video games for that matter, are true gamers, I find absurd.

Directly relating to video games, however, my statement still stands. A true video gamer should be open to all genres, have a list of favorites from each recognised genre of video gaming (shooter, RTS, RPG, racing, etc etc) and be able to discuss, intelligently, why certain games are good WITHOUT PERSONAL BIAS. (Ex: The Darkness is a medicore shooter at best, but is innovative in the way it presents the story to the players, which is the driving point of the game, rather than the combat.)

if your a gamer you must have at very least played and beaten "Ocarina of Time"
I own the game... do I get some points?

I never was big into Legend of Zelda. I really tried to get into Twilight Princess, but it just wasn't my thing. And I've played the original too, which was hard as balls.

My thing is that if you haven't heard of a certain franchise that is REALLY popular, then you obviously need to become more open-minded at least try it. Like there was this one kid who was going on about how hardcore he is because he can mod MW2, and when we started talking about Final Fantasy, he said he'd never even heard of the series.

We all just kind of gave him a weird look.

Anyone can make an assertion like that. Here's one...
"If you haven't played I Wanna Be The Guy for more than five minutes, you've no right to be deathly afraid of apples/spikes/birds/the moon flying in your direction and reducing you to a lovely smear of blood."

Why did I download it again?

EDIT: There was that one time I was playing Team Fortress 2 and some productive member of society idiot plank-brained twatbag told me I wasn't a gamer because I hadn't played Modern Warfare 2. He died a lot. Bwaha.
